Basketballs be bouncin’

The seasons are a’changing.

It’s not just Daylight Savings Time, which is roaring up on us, but also the sounds of basketballs thunking against gym floors.

The Coupeville Middle School boys are the first ones to claim the hardwood, having opened practice Monday.

The 10-game Wolf schedule runs through Dec. 19, with the first game set for Nov. 13.

Greg White returns to coach, while Jon Roberts and Craig Anderson join him this time around.

Continuing a new trend started during volleyball season, the CMS hoops squads will not be divided up by grade, but by talent level.

Instead of 7th and 8th playing separately, there will be three teams — Level 1, 2, and 3 — with each squad featuring a mix of the two grades.

Two days into practice, the Wolf coaches have 26 players to draw upon.

While some may go, and some may show up late, here’s how things stand as of mid-Tuesday:

Their gym, their time

Avery Parker, the undisputed champ of the local art scene, shows support for big sis Skylar.

The gym is open for business.

Coupeville’s 7th/8th grade SWISH girls basketball squad hit the floor for the first time this weekend, playing a seeding game against “a tenacious and seasoned Nooksack team.”

The Wolves, who boast an 11-player roster, forced the game to overtime before falling 17-14.

Lauren Marrs and Brionna Blouin paced Coupeville with six points apiece, both hitting a pair of three-balls, while Savina Wells dropped in a bucket to round out the scoring.

With the start of the regular season coming next Saturday, Nov. 2, the seeding game was a good way for Wolf coach Fred Farris to see the hand he’s been dealt.

A noted hoops star back in his own day, the Coupeville round-ball sage likes the promise his young players are already showing.

Middle school volleyball and club soccer have been vying for his girls time, but, once together on the hardwood, they immediately begin clicking.

“The girls made up for expected lack of execution with effort and heart!,” Farris said.

“Savina, Lauren, and Lyla (Stuurman’s) previous experience with SWISH was very obvious on the court,” he added. “They really took charge on the floor.”

Farris has a young roster, with seven of 11 players being 7th graders, and several of his young stars being newbies to the increased pace and pressure.

“This was many of the girls first experience with high level competitive basketball,” he said. “They went from not sure about wanting to go in the game to being excited about our next game and getting more floor time.

“Savina was very strong on the defensive end and the boards,” Farris added. “Lauren was a force on both ends.

“Lyla was an absolute beast on defense and the boards. Skylar (Parker) rounded out our starters and was sure on both ends.

Coupeville’s roster also includes Reese Wilkinson, Madison McMillan, Katie Marti, Mia Farris, Jada Heaton, and Taylor Brotemarkle.

Whether seasoned pros or relative newcomers, they all showed considerable promise.

“Everyone contributed and gave everything they had,” Fred Farris said. “It will be so exciting to see this group grow together on the court!”

Run for glory, run for pride

“Wowza!!! Look at those improvements!”

Coupeville Middle School cross country coach Elizabeth Bitting was beaming Wednesday after most of her runners PR’d at the Cascade League Championships in South Whidbey.

The Wolves wrapped a very-successful seven-meet season with their final race in Langley, which covered a 1.7 mile course.

A final kick, a final bow

Logan Downes led the Wolves with five goals.

Tavan Hughes (10) and Nick Guay (13) helped lead the Wolves into a new world.

The first season is in the books.

The Coupeville Middle School boys soccer program, which launched this fall, reached the end of the trail Wednesday, falling 4-0 to visiting Northshore Christian Academy.

The Wolves finished 2-8 in their first go-around on the pitch, with Logan Downes (5) and Andrew Williams (2) combining to rattle home Coupeville’s goals this season.

Wednesday’s game remained scoreless until the 11th minute, when Northshore got on the board thanks to a fairly spectacular goal.

One of the visitors lofted a long ball from the right side, off of a corner kick, with a teammate springing airborne to use his head to deflect the shot past Wolf goalie William Davidson.

A second score, coming on a penalty kick, put NSA up 2-0 at the halftime break, then the private school booters tacked on two more goals in the second half.

Coupeville’s defense played strongly in the loss, with especially nice work from Mason Butler, who took over in goal midway through the first half.

A newcomer to the net, he pulled off several nice saves, including making back-to-back denials as Northshore’s high-powered offense kept up a steady barrage of in-close shots.

The debut season was a learning experience for CMS coach Reese Cernick and his players, with the soccer guru witnessing improvement as the campaign played out.

In his post-season assessment, Cernick praised players such as Quinten Simpson-Pilgrim, who entered the season with little experience, but exited having shown great growth and a desire to keep improving.
