Wolf catcher Cole

Wolf catcher Cole Payne contemplates the universe. “I just keep calling for strikes, and they keep on throwing strikes. Dang, I am freakin’ gold today!”

The season opened with a bang.

Any time you no-hit your foes and romp to a 10-0 win on Opening Day, which is just what the CHS baseball squad did Saturday against Blaine, it’s a good day.

Now, depending on how fast the field dries out, the Wolves are scheduled to put their winning streak on the line today against former Cascade Conference rival Sultan.

First pitch is set for 4 PM (depending on general sogginess).

To get you ready, a couple of quick pics from travelin’ photo man John Fisken.

Cole Payne, a man for all seasons.

Cole Payne, a man for all seasons.

If there’s a birthday cake, no one let him near the knife.

Coupeville High School junior Cole Payne is a pro at everything he does — football, baseball, being a freakin’ American hero — but he’s also pretty skilled at hurting himself.

Frequent injuries have been the only thing slowing down his rise to being a full-fledged star.

In fact, his latest surgery, which came just days before his birthday, will knock him out for the complete football season. That’s a huge blow to the Wolves.

When he was healthy last year, Payne was a heat-seeking missile on the gridiron.

If you had the ball and tried to run away from him, you usually ended up planted face-first in the turf, wondering how that freight train that just hit you managed to get on the field.

Cole was equally potent on the offensive side of the ball, both as a receiver and a runner.

But, while football coach Tony Maggio may (secretly) shed tears over the loss of Payne, there is a silver lining.

Having surgery on his bum shoulder at this point of the year should give him plenty of time to get back to full health by baseball season.

And it is as a boy of summer that Payne, like older brother Morgan, really shines.

Whether as a pitcher or, more often these days, as a catcher, he’s a sweet-swingin’, fleet-footed two-way terror, capable of turning the tide in favor of his squad on both offense and defense.

With five key seniors, including Morgan, having graduated, Cole should move into a leadership position and be at the forefront of Wolf baseball the next two seasons.

That is how we want to see him, on the field, kickin’ fanny and takin’ names, not on the sideline, arm in a sling.

I’m not saying he can’t be entertaining as he works those sidelines, but we want more Payne and less pain.

So happy birthday, Cole, and here’s to a bright future. May it include as few doctors as possible.

“See, sir, if you look through the open part you’ll see that I’m throwing nothin’ but strikes!”

Still kinda weird to see them in blue.

Still kinda weird to see them in blue.

For the second straight summer, Wolves and Falcons mingled together, and there was peace and good will for all.

Making the trip down South, Coupeville High School baseball stars Aaron Trumbull and Cole Payne swapped out red and black and wore South Whidbey blue and white to play American Legion ball for Falcon coach Tom Fallon.

Along for the ride, snapping away madly on her camera, was Shelli Trumbull, who provides us with the pics above, a final salute to baseball as summer slips away.

Joan Payne is getting tired of watching her sons go in for surgery.

“This better be the end to accidents!,” she said. “We have had enough injuries in this house. NO MORE!!”

This time it’s middle son Cole who’s going (back) under the knife, after doctors found he had re-torn the labrum in his shoulder.

The Coupeville High School junior will have surgery Aug. 26 — two days before his birthday. With a minimum of three to four months of recovery time, he will miss both football and basketball.

The plan is to be healthy in time for baseball in the spring, when he should step in full-time as the starting catcher with the graduation of Jake Tumblin.

It will be the third consecutive hoops season Payne has been out, as he has yet to play a second of high school basketball.

Nasal surgery cost him his freshman season and he tore the shoulder labrum near the end of his sophomore football season.

Surgeries have tormented the Payne family of late.

Older brother Morgan had his senior baseball season ended prematurely this spring when the stellar shortstop broke his hand while fielding a ball during a practice.

Adding to the family’s efforts to get a frequent flier punch card from surgeons, Joan Payne herself also had shoulder surgery this year.

Coupeville’s hired guns continue to sparkle down South.

Wolves Aaron Trumbull and Cole Payne are playing summer ball with the South Whidbey American Legion squad, and, other than looking slightly odd in blue and white as opposed to red and black, the duo are fitting right in.

With Trumbull seeing time at first and on the mound and Payne shuttling between catcher and the infield, they and their new teammates are 8-10 on the season.

Having split doubleheaders with Burlington, Lake Stevens and Oak Harbor and swept a twinbill from Nooksack Valley last week, the Falcons are heading in the right direction.

South Whidbey closes the regular season with a doubleheader against Lynden Wednesday, before kicking off the postseason with districts on July 16.

“We’re right in the middle of the pack,” said South Whidbey coach Tom Fallon. “We are hoping to finish .500 overall and head into the playoffs on a roll.”
