It was a win-win night.

The Coupeville High School varsity volleyball squad thrashed visiting Concrete in straight sets Tuesday, while also raising nearly $1,000 for the fight against breast cancer.

Playing on Dig Pink Night, the Wolves cruised past the Lions 25-10, 25-6, 25-7 to remain undefeated in Northwest 2B/1B League play.

Coupeville is 5-0 in conference action, 6-3 overall heading into a showdown Thursday at Mount Vernon Christian (6-1, 10-1).

Still ahead for the Wolves are two matches against three-time defending 2B state champs La Conner (5-0, 7-1).

But all of that is for another day.

Tuesday night was about getting on the court and picking apart the conference cellar-dweller, and the Wolves were efficient.

Everyone played, and everyone contributed, allowing CHS coach Cory Whitmore a chance to tinker with his lineup and see what certain players could deliver in sometimes unfamiliar roles.

Key to the assault on Concrete was the service game, where Coupeville dominated.

“We served very well, and were clean at the line,” Whitmore said.

That was apparent from the very start, as Maddie Georges, Ryanne Knoblich, Alita Blouin, Taygin Jump, and Katie Marti all racked up points on their serve in the opening set.

By contrast, Concrete didn’t generate a point on offense until it was already trailing 20-6.

When the Lions did get Coupeville’s serves back in play, the Wolf big hitters went to work endings things quickly.

Lyla Stuurmans and Grey Peabody beat the stuffing out of the volleyball on big spike winners, though it was Blouin who had the loudest, nastiest hit in the first frame.

It came on a serve, which zipped low and hard across the net before pegging a Concrete player right in the face, the Lion player’s shoulder only absorbing about 3% of the blow.

The ever-mysterious Blouin, showing only the slightest smile at the corners of her mouth, simply walked away like a gunfighter, leaving the bodies where they dropped.

But it wasn’t all power for the Wolves, as Mia Farris bounded to the skies to drop in a tip winner on set point, essentially ending the match after one lopsided set.

The teams played two more frames, but only one squad stood a chance, as Coupeville put on a clinic.

Georges, who recorded her 200th assist of the season Tuesday, flicked winners at the service line, with a little help from Knoblich, who was deadly and dangerous while guarding the net.

Fellow Wolf senior Jill Prince chipped in with a graceful tip winner to stall a brief Concrete rally, then it was back to the gun show.

Stuurmans and fellow sophomore Madison McMillan showcased their ability to deliver nuclear-style blasts which tore off the corner of the court while staying just inbounds.

Not to be outdone, Peabody climbed an invisible stairway to heaven, then rained down unholy Hell on the Lions waiting below, her spikes bending time and space.

Or at least it felt that way sometimes, as Concrete’s players, while scrappy, had little chance of offsetting Coupeville’s missiles.

Mia Farris delivered the final punctuation, cracking open the court with a ferocious spike while dad Fred did his best imitation of a neutral observer while filling the role of impartial linesman.

Though, if you looked closely, he, like the rest of the Wolf fans, had plenty to smile about.

Tuesday stats:

Alita Blouin — 9 digs, 2 aces
Mia Farris — 4 kills, 4 aces
Maddie Georges — 20 assists, 8 aces
Taygin Jump — 1 kill, 2 digs, 7 aces
Ryanne Knoblich — 3 kills, 6 digs, 3 aces
Madison McMillan — 3 kills, 2 digs, 4 aces
Grey Peabody — 6 kills
Jill Prince — 3 kills
Lyla Stuurmans — 4 kills

Wolves raise bucks, awareness:

Dig Pink Night was a huge success, as the Wolves generated major moola by selling raffle tickets for gift baskets, with the proceeds going to the Whidbey Health Foundation.

Alerted by Wolf moms that the spikers had brought in nearly $1,000, Whitmore beamed, his smile filling the gym.

“It was phenomenal,” he said.

“I’m so proud of this program – the kids, the parents, the fans – everyone who was involved in making it a success.”

They came ready to crack Concrete.

Roaring out of the gate Tuesday, the Coupeville High School JV volleyball squad obliterated the visiting Lions 25-3, 25-13, 25-13.

The sixth-straight win for the Wolf young guns, it lifts them to 5-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 8-1 overall.

Coupeville was relentless from the service stripe all night, piling up 36 aces, and the winners started flying early.

Katie Marti opened things with six quick points on her serve, Issabel Johnson dropped a couple of nasty offerings Concrete had no chance of hitting, and then Taylor Brotemarkle went to work.

The Wolf sophomore stepped to the line with a 10-2 advantage and ran the lead up to 20-2 in the span of about 17 seconds.

Concrete only managed to return one of Brotemarkle’s first 10 serves, and that brief rally was quickly crushed when Aby Wood delivered a spike winner at the net.

The Wolves closed the opening set with Grier Mooney peppering Concrete’s would-be serve returners, and the rout was on.

While the second and third set were closer than the first frame, Coupeville quickly regained control each time, earning a nod of approval from coach Ashley Menges.

Teagan Calkins and Jada Heaton each cracked gym-shaking winners while patrolling the net, while Johnson also brought the thunder when Concrete managed to briefly force a back-and-forth.

Menges got solid play from across her roster, with all 10 girls in uniform contributing.

Chloe Marzocca, Carly Burt, and Oktober Frost also saw action, with Marzocca thumping a dramatic service ace on her first swing at the line.

The league victory marked the start of a busy week for the Wolves, who travel to Mount Vernon Christian Thursday, then host non-league foe Neah Bay Saturday.

Tuesday stats:

Taylor Brotemarkle — 1 kill, 1 dig, 12 aces
Teagan Calkins — 3 kills, 1 dig, 4 aces
Jada Heaton — 4 kills
Issabel Johnson — 4 kills, 5 aces
Katie Marti — 2 kills, 13 assists, 10 aces
Chloe Marzocca — 1 kill, 1 ace
Grier Mooney — 4 aces

Senior Cody Roberts was dominant Tuesday, as Coupeville High School pitchers held Concrete to two hits in a doubleheader sweep. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

It was a shellacking in the sunshine.

Taking advantage of a surprisingly nice day Tuesday, the Coupeville High School varsity baseball squad got two games in, with both being lopsided victories.

Sweeping visiting Concrete 11-0 and 19-0 in games mercy-ruled after five innings, the Wolves improve to 7-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 9-5 overall.

That leaves Coupeville a half-game back of defending league champ Friday Harbor (7-0 in NWL action) and two games up on third-place Mount Vernon Christian (5-3).

The next two games are as big as any this season, with the Wolves set to square off with their prime rivals.

Coupeville travels to MVC this Friday, Apr. 22, before hosting Friday Harbor Apr. 26.

The Wolves head into those games with the warm glow of victory cascading everywhere, after wrecking winless Concrete.

Not only did Coupeville outscore the Lions 30-0, it also outhit the visitors 23-2, pasting the ball to all fields.

Game #1:

The opener gave locals a chance to watch Cody Roberts tossing liquid heat, as the senior righty whiffed nine across four innings of work.

He no-hit Concrete during his time on the hill, scattering some walks to keep things interesting, before turning things over to 8th grade ace Chase Anderson.

The future of Wolf baseball also proved to be deadly in the present, with “The Magic Man” slamming the door with a pair of knee-buckling strikeouts after the Lions scratched out their only base-knock of the game.

Chase Anderson gets electric.

Offensively, Coupeville chipped, chipped, chipped away, before finally busting loose in the late going.

The Wolves opened the scoring in the bottom of the first thanks to Jonathan Valenzuela blistering a two-out, two-run single back up the middle.

From there Coupeville rinsed and repeated, pushing two more runners across in both the second and third to build a 6-0 lead.

Cody Roberts had the big blow in the second, bopping a double which curled down the left field line and hit paydirt.

With the lead in hand, the Wolves shoved the game into mercy-rule land by dumping five runs on the board in the fourth inning.

Coupeville mixed a flurry of hits — including a bunt single from the fleet-footed Anderson — and several Concrete errors to officially end things.

Game #2:

New pitcher, same results.

Coupeville senior Hawthorne Wolfe took the bump in the nightcap and went the distance, recording 13 strikeouts across five innings of (almost) no-hit ball.

The Lions poked a leadoff single into left to open the fifth inning, putting their first runner aboard since the game’s second hitter had his lower leg blown off by a wayward Wolfe pitch.

After that, the most entertaining man in high school sports entertainment was in lock-down mode, flicking fastballs past flailing Concrete hitters, then piling up base-knocks when he himself was at the plate.

Hawthorne Wolfe throws ’em, but you can’t hit ’em.

Wolfe crunched three of Coupeville’s 14 hits in the second game, and should have had a fourth one, only to be denied by an ump who left his seeing eye dog in the car.

Not that it ultimately mattered, as CHS put this game on ice quickly.

Sending 18 batters to the plate in the first inning, the Wolves tapped home plate 13 times, with the carnage only stopped by a runner being called out on interference on a pop-up to third base.

Mixing JV players with varsity veterans, Coupeville coach Will Thayer got action for everyone in uniform in the nightcap, doing what he could to ease the pain of a blowout.

The Wolves still added three runs in the second and another three in the fourth, with Concrete failing several times to get out of innings when it had the chance.

8th grader Aiden O’Neill walloped a gorgeous double to deep left to start one rally, with Jack Porter ripping a two-run single to cap another.

Along the way Wolf catcher Peyton Caveness was drilled not once, but twice, with pitches which got away from Concrete’s hurlers.

He wore both plunkings with style, earning a nod of approval from big sis Coral, who was hit approximately 43,917 times during her own stellar Coupeville softball career.

Tuesday stats:

Chase Anderson — 1 single
Peyton Caveness — 2 singles, 2 walks
Camden Glover — 1 walk
Scott Hilborn — 2 singles
Cole Hutchinson — 1 single
Xavier Murdy — 2 walks
Aiden O’Neill — 1 double, 1 walk
Jack Porter — 1 single
Cody Roberts — 1 single, 2 walks
Landon Roberts — 2 singles, 1 walk
Sage Sharp — 2 singles, 1 double
Jonathan Valenzuela — 2 singles
Cole White — 3 singles
Hawthorne Wolfe — 4 singles, 1 walk

Izzy Wells and Coupeville softball lost a league opponent Thursday, when Concrete cancelled its season. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

A crisp 15% of the schedule just vanished.

Concrete High School announced Thursday it would not be able to field a softball team this season, due to a lack of players.

That erases three games from Coupeville’s 20-game schedule.

The Lions and Wolves were slated to play a doubleheader in Concrete Mar. 25, before facing off for a single game Apr. 19 in Coupeville.

The loss of Concrete leaves five of seven Northwest 2B/1B League schools active on the softball field, with La Conner, Friday Harbor, Darrington, and Orcas Island joining Coupeville.

Mount Vernon Christian doesn’t play the sport.

UPDATE #1:

A non-conference home game against Meridian Apr. 20 has been added, bumping the Wolves back to 18 contests.

UPDATE #2:

A non-conference road game at Oak Harbor Apr. 22 has been added, bumping CHS back to 19 tilts.
