Gridiron giants honor high achievers

That’s a wrap.

The Coupeville High School fall sports banquet season reached the finish line Tuesday, as Wolf football became the sixth, and final, team to honor its athletes.

Head coach Bennett Richter tabbed Chase Anderson as his Offensive MVP, while Davin Houston was named Defensive MVP.

Other awards went to Aiden O’Neill (Most Inspirational), Riley Lawless (I.H.O.P. Lineman of the Year), and Liam Blas (Way of the Wolf), while the duo of Aaron DiDonna and Aiden Tingley were honored as Scout Team Players of the Year.

Seniors Marquette Cunningham, Jayme Carranza, Malachi Somes, Camden Glover, Anderson, and O’Neill all received Four Year Awards as well.

Aiden O’Neill received the Most Inspirational Award.

Gridiron gang closes with playoff loss

They reached the end of the road, way down the road.

Playing Friday in Raymond, the Coupeville High School football team scored first, but couldn’t keep it going, ultimately falling 48-14 to Pe Ell/Willapa Valley in a loser-out, winner-to-state playoff tilt.

With the loss, the Wolves finish 1-8, while PWV gets to 7-3 and will find out its next opponent Sunday when the 16-team bracket for the 2B tourney is announced.

After traveling 100+ miles for the matchup with a District 4 powerhouse, Coupeville struck gold early, as Davin Houston hauled in a touchdown toss from Chase Anderson, plunging in for his sixth score of the season.

Unfortunately for the Wolves that was where the trips to the end zone ended, at least for a while, as PWV began to pound away on both sides of the ball.

The Titans tied things up, moved ahead, then piled on the points en route to a 27-7 halftime lead.

Another touchdown early in the third quarter stretched Coupeville’s deficit out to 35-7, before Anderson connected with Aiden O’Neill on a scoring strike to get the Wolves into double-digits.

With the penalties piling up for the visitors, PWV closed things out by punching in two more touchdowns in the late going to set the final score.

Coupeville loses six seniors, with O’Neill, Anderson, Marquette Cunningham, Jayme Carranza, Malachi Somes, and Camden Glover set to graduate next spring.

But the Wolves can return four of the six players who scored a touchdown this year, plus a bunch of heavy hitters such as Jackson Sollars, Ira Volpentesta, and Riley Lawless.

Rugged lineman Riley Lawless is slated to return next fall.

They know their way to the end zone

It’s been almost an even split this season.

Through eight games, Coupeville High School football has tallied 20 touchdowns, with 11 of those coming from seniors and nine from underclassmen.

Chase Anderson and Aiden O’Neill rep the Class of 2026, with the other four guys to have paydirt either being sophomores (Liam Blas, Nathan Coxsey) or juniors (Davin Houston, Josh Stockdale).

They light up the scoreboard

The offense was clicking.

Scoring a season-high Friday, the Coupeville High School football team demolished South Whidbey 35-6 and reclaimed ownership of The Bucket.

Along the way, senior quarterback Chase Anderson ran for three touchdowns, vaulting into first place for all three individual scoring stats.

With back-to-back home games against Adna and Friday Harbor up next, here’s where the point chase sits as of Oct. 13:

Fab five embrace end zone love

Everyone’s chasing Davin.

Three games into the season, junior Davin Houston tops the scoring stats for the Coupeville High School football team, keeping alive a tradition started by older brothers Dawson and Daylon.

The third of Daniel and Alia’s three sons has recorded at least one touchdown every week heading into Friday’s Homecoming tilt with Cedar Park Christian-Bothell, and he’s looking to spend more quality time in the end zone.
