Booters launch banquet season

Every letterman can return next season.

With no seniors on this year’s roster, the Coupeville High School boys’ soccer squad went 15 players deep, and first-year coach Jim Kunz awarded every man on his roster a varsity letter.

Which makes sense, since most of the Wolves saw considerable field time during a season in which CHS picked up four of its five wins on its home pitch.

The booters were the first of Coupeville’s six fall sports teams to hand out postseason honors, kicking things off with a pizza party Tuesday night.

Pain in the rain

It was a rough afternoon all around.

Playing in a driving rainstorm in Bothell Friday, the Coupeville High School boys’ soccer squad lost a game, and several players.

Clashing with host Providence Classical Christian in a “very intense, aggressive game” where “the ref didn’t call much,” the Wolves fell 3-1.

The loss drops CHS to 2-4 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 4-8 overall, and slides them into a tie with PCC for fifth place in the nine-team league.

With two games left on the regular season schedule — a road trip to Orcas Island and a home clash with La Conner — Coupeville is fighting for its playoff life.

And almost fighting the old-fashioned way as well.

“The game almost got out of hand, but Coupeville (players) kept their composure despite the frustration,” said Wolf coach Jim Kunz.

It was a rough and tumble affair where Aiden Wheat (knee) and Jacob Lujan (ankle) suffered injuries, Shiloh Sandlin took a head to the nose, causing a significant nosebleed, and Brian Thompson and Sandlin were both handed yellow cards by the officials.

Through it all, the Wolves persevered, getting their goal from Edmund Wilson, who notched his fifth score of the campaign.

Kunz also praised the play of goaltender Sam Richards, who “was amazing as usual in the goal backed up by a strong defense.”

Toasty temps, sweet success

The day was hot, while the Wolves were scorching.

It was 89 degrees on the turf in Marysville Tuesday, but the heat never bothered the visiting Coupeville High School boys’ soccer team.

Banging home their first scores of the young season, the Wolves slipped past host Grace Academy 2-1 in a nail biter, raising their record to 1-2.

Coupeville controlled the pace of play most of the way, with their private school foes netting their lone goal off of a penalty kick late in the going.

Other than that, it was all Wolves, all the time.

“We put some changes and plays in action,” said Coupeville coach Jim Kunz. “They came out strong from the beginning. Communication and passing was much better.”

The Wolves kept the Grace goalie jumping all day, with Edmund Wilson finding the back of the net off of a pass from Sawyer Rudat, before picking up the assist on a score by Liam Lawson.

It was the first high school goal for both Wolves, with Wilson becoming the third member of his family to score in a CHS uniform.

His older brothers, Aidan and Cael, finished their prep pitch careers with 13 goals apiece, tying them for 7th best in program history.

Lawson, a freshman whiz kid, is part of a legendary prairie family which includes athletic standouts such as grandpa Dale Sherman, aunt Katie Smith, and mom “Killer” Kassie (Lawson) O’Neil.

The Wolves get back at it Friday, Sept. 19, with a home soccer doubleheader at Mickey Clark Field.

Pitch powerhouse Mount Vernon Christian is the foe, with the girls game at 4:00 PM and the boys kicking off at 6:00. Admission is free.
