If I haven’t said it before, I’ll say it again – the record is kind of deceptive.

The Coupeville High School boys tennis team, which went through the early part of the season without a full varsity roster, is a work in progress.

Which makes it tough when your netters play in the Emerald City League, a cutthroat, private school-dominated conference which has produced most of the 1A state champions in the last decade.

So, while the scrappy public school Wolves are competitive every time out, as they were Tuesday while losing 3-2 to Eastside Prep in Kirkland, they’ve taken a few dings on the ol’ win/loss record this time around.

Coupeville sits at 1-7 in league play, with home matches coming Thursday (University Prep) and Friday (The Bush School).

The first of those opponents is one of the front-runners for the 2019 team state title, while the latter is win-less this season.

Both times CHS played Eastside Prep this season, they fell by the narrowest of margins.

Tuesday the Wolves got wins from Zach Ginnings, sliding up to play singles for the first time this season, and the doubles duo of James Wood and Mason Grove.

Ginnings was the last man on the court, and won his match by coming out on top in a cut-down tiebreaker as the teams raced impending darkness.

The only thing dropping from the skies Monday was the occasional lob.

After scattered rain showers postponed their match last week, the Coupeville High School netters were able to make the short trek to South Whidbey, but fell just short of returning with a win.

Sweeping all three doubles matches, the Falcons escaped with a razor-thin 3-2 win, dropping the Wolves to 1-6 in Emerald City League play.

The all-Island rumble kicks off a busy week for Coupeville, which is scheduled to play four times in five days.

The Wolves travel to Kirkland Tuesday to face Eastside Prep, then are home Thursday (University Prep) and Friday (The Bush School).

Seattle Academy is pretty good at this whole serve and volley thing.

The ritzy private school (tuition is $34,236 per year) is one of the three big powerhouses in 1A boys tennis, joining University Prep and Charles Wright Academy.

The Cardinals finished second in the team standings at the state tourney last spring, adding to a pair of previous 3rd place showings.

Overall, Seattle Academy has brought home a team trophy seven of the last eight seasons.

Which is all a long way of getting around to mentioning the Cardinals came to Whidbey Wednesday and bushwhacked Coupeville 5-0.

The loss drops the Wolves to 1-5 in Emerald City League play heading into a road match Friday at South Whidbey.

If nothing else, getting the chance to play Wednesday was preferable to Monday, when a road trip to Redmond to play Bear Creek was rained out.

It was the second time liquid sunshine has prevented the Wolves from playing a match this fall.

Complete Wednesday results:

1st Singles — Drake Borden lost to Josh Davydov 6-1, 6-1

2nd Singles — Thane Peterson lost to Zach Cohen 6-0, 6-0

1st Doubles — James Wood/Mason Grove lost to Orson Smith/Dmitri Vladimir 6-1, 6-2

2nd Doubles — Zach Ginnings/Andrew Aparicio lost to Spencer Bryant/Eli Podell 6-1, 6-4

3rd Doubles — Miles Davidson/Logan Martin lost to Coltrane Thomas/Hudson Lennard 8-0

Drake Borden cruised to a one-sided win at #1 singles Friday, but Coupeville fell to visiting Overlake. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

It could have gone either way. Literally.

Using a late rally across the day’s final two matches Friday, Overlake flipped what could have been a 3-2 loss into a 4-1 win.

Unable to hold on to a lead in #2 singles and #2 doubles, the Coupeville High School boys tennis team watched the home match slip away, and fell to 1-4 in Emerald City League play.

“For a minute, I thought we’d pull it out,” said CHS coach Ken Stange. “We were down 2-1, but had won the first set (in the final two matches).

“If they pulled them out, we would’ve won. So close!”

Coupeville’s Drake Borden stormed to an easy win at #1 singles, his second victory in the last three days, to earn the Wolves what would turn out to be their only point.

Fellow singles player Thane Peterson and the doubles duo of Andrew Aparicio and Zach Ginnings were both a set up in their matches, but couldn’t hang on to the momentum as their bouts played out.

As long as the rain stays away, the Wolves will be busy next week, playing three times.

They travel to Bear Creek Monday, Sept. 23, host Seattle Academy Wednesday, then hit the road Friday for the short drive to South Whidbey.

Complete Friday results:

1st Singles — Drake Borden won 6-1, 6-1

2nd Singles — Thane Peterson lost 4-6, 6-2, 10-6

1st Doubles — James Wood/Mason Grove lost 6-3, 6-1

2nd Doubles — Zach Ginnings/Andrew Aparicio lost 6-7(3-7), 6-3, 6-0

3rd Doubles — Miles Davidson/Koby Schreiber lost 6-0, 6-2

Can’t stop them when they have all their guys.

Playing with a complete varsity lineup for the first time this season, the Coupeville High School boys tennis team bounced The Bush School 3-2 Wednesday, notching its first team win of the season.

With the road victory, the Wolves improve to 1-3 in Emerald City League play, and now head home to host Overlake Friday afternoon.

Play starts at 3:30 PM.

Coupeville was down a man through its first three matches, and had to forfeit #2 singles each time out.

That changed in a big way Wednesday, as Miles Davidson, having reached the magical number of practices, made his season debut.

With the sophomore teaming up with Koby Schreiber to play #3 doubles, Thane Peterson went solo, playing singles for the first time in his prep career.

And he made quite the auspicious debut, rolling to a 7-5, 6-1 win which proved to be vitally important to the team cause.

It was a performance which made longtime CHS tennis guru Ken Stange do a little dance.

“I was very proud of Thane,” the Wolf coach said. “He was a bit nervous, but we discussed playing one point at a time, as opposed to looking at the match as a single entity.

“Breaking it down to just playing points allows a player to shed some nerves. It makes it more like practice,” Stange added. “After a close first set, I gave him a few tips. He put them into play and romped in the second set.”

Coupeville also got big wins at #1 singles (Drake Borden) and #1 doubles (James Wood/Mason Grove) to seal the deal on the conference win.

It was the second victory this season for the Wolf tandem, and the first for Borden, who has had to face a murderer’s row of sluggers at the top of the roster in the state’s toughest 1A tennis league.

Mason and James were outstanding,” Stange said. “They too played a close first set before blowing the doors off in the second.

“They hit with easy power and were able to find the proper angles.”

Borden, who worked extensively on his game in the off-season, has been highly-competitive in his matches, while facing tournament-tested pros, but Wednesday it all came together as he won a three-set thriller.

Drake muddled through the first set,” Stange said. “He was playing someone he knew he could beat, but he was tense. He took a few deep breaths, released some muscle tension, and proceeded to play a dominant second set.

“He built a commanding lead in the third set tiebreaker before coughing up a few points to make things close,” he added. “When it came down to crunch time, Drake picked up the match point, the individual win, and clinched the team win.

“All in all, it was a good day.”
