Fall is about to kick in the door.

With rain drops splattering down on the prairie Monday, we are officially at T-minus-100 hours until the kickoff of games that count.

Now, technically, the Coupeville High School girls’ soccer team is the first in action with a jamboree Thursday in Oak Harbor, but the first contest that goes in the win/loss column comes a day later.

That’s when the Wolves travel down Island Friday to face-off with arch-rival South Whidbey in Langley (7 PM kickoff) in their first game under new head coach Brett Smedley.

The Falcons will have their own first-year man in Michael Coe, with Chris Tormey having fled the Island after just one season to go work in the Canadian Football League.

At stake in the non-conference game will be bragging rights and ownership of The Bucket, the trophy which has spent two of the last three years living in Coupeville.

Let the battles begin.

Cole Payne? he's kind of a big deal. (John Fisken and Shelli Trumbull photos)

Cole Payne? He’s kind of a big deal. (John Fisken and Shelli Trumbull photos)

He is more myth than man, more legend than reality.

Wherever he goes, whatever he does, the screams of his fans threaten to rip the roof off the building.

He is legend. He is Cole Payne.

As the Coupeville High School senior celebrates a birthday today, you need to stop and realize — we only get one more year of the awesomeness here in Cow Town before he’s off to spread the gospel of Cole world-wide.

Appreciate the talent. Bow to the coolness factor. Respect the game.

Baseball. Football. Basketball. And now, according to the buzz, tennis.

Payne can do it all and he can do it all well.

It’s not his fault. He was just born talented.

As he prepares for his final year at CHS, we just want to say a quick thank you to Mr. Payne, for the on-field thrills he’s delivered so far, and the highlight reel still to come this year.

Happy birthday, Cole. Stay legendary.

So, does this mean I don’t have to pay rent next month?!?!

Yeah, probably not, but it is proof that my landlord here at Coupeville Sports HQ was once a Wolf athlete himself.

I’ve heard some of the tales from Jack Sell’s past, in the days when he was an undersized but over-achieving gridiron giant.

But here we see the legend that was, in bold black and white, thanks to former teammate Paul Messner, who dug it out of the archives.

Anyone else have stuff like this?

Send it my way (davidsvien@hotmail.com or find me on Facebook), as we reclaim Cow Town sports history one tidbit at a time.

“Dang! Downes is like a beast out there!!” Julian Welling (in back) keeps an eye on his QB while stretching Chris Battaglia out.

The countdown is on.

In less than two weeks the Coupeville High School football squad will travel to Langley to kick off its first season under new head coach Brett Smedley.

Before that Sept. 4 battle for The Bucket, however, the Wolves will be putting in work. Lots of it.

Catching some of that practice time Monday was travelin’ photo man John Fisken, who provides us with the pics that reside above.

Day two was a battle. Literally.

It may feel like the middle of the summer, but practice for fall sports officially began Wednesday, with the Coupeville High School football squad the first to kick off events.

The second day brought two new wrinkles to things — a visit by travelin’ photo man John Fisken and a team tug of war competition.

Let the clickin’ and the gruntin’ begin.
