“I couldn’t be more proud of them!”

Take them down early and never let them back in the game.

That was the mindset Friday for the Coupeville High School girls JV basketball squad, as they roared out to a big lead and rolled to a 41-27 win over visiting Granite Falls.

With the victory, the Wolves improve to 6-2 in North Sound Conference action, 10-4 overall, with two games left on the schedule next week.

The JV squad hosts South Whidbey this coming Tuesday and La Conner Thursday.

In that second game, the young guns will have the solo spotlight, as the Wolf varsity has that night off as it preps for the playoffs.

Friday night, CHS jumped out to a 10-6 lead after one quarter of play, with swing players Anya Leavell and Audrianna Shaw each slapping home four points.

After that, the Wolves put the big hurt on the Tigers, riding an eight-point second-quarter explosion from Ella Colwell to shove the lead out to 25-11 by the half.

While the second half was an even fight — literally, as the teams played to 8-8 ties in both the third and fourth quarters — Coupeville coach Megan Smith was able to get floor time for 15 girls, including one making her debut.

Maylin Steele, a first-year player, has been practicing with the team and learning the game, but hadn’t suited up until Friday night.

On the floor for the first time, the Wolves got her the ball and she responded, dropping in a bucket to etch her name into the scorebook.

“It was truly an awesome moment for Maylin and the team!,” Smith said. “I couldn’t be more proud of them all.

“We played one of our best games yet! The girls came out swinging and never let down.”

Colwell finished with a game-high 12 points to lead the Wolf attack, while Leavell and Shaw backed her up, each finishing with six.

Alita Blouin (5), Gwen Gustafson (4), Abby Mulholland (4), Ryanne Knoblich (2) and Steele (2) also scored, with Natalie Castano, Claire Mayne, Jessenia Camarena, Heidi Meyers, Morgan Stevens, Kylie Van Velkinburgh, and Mollie Bailey seeing floor time.

Always scrappy, always battlin’

Fewer bodies, more improvement.

As the season has gone on, the Coupeville High School boys C-Team basketball squad has taken a hit in roster size, but the players who remain continue to show great growth.

Playing with seven players Friday, Patrick Upchurch’s squad hung tough all night before falling 45-29 to visiting Granite Falls.

The young Wolves drop to 1-7 in North Sound Conference play, 2-10 overall, heading into their season finale this coming Tuesday at Sultan.

Win or lose, the C-Team is a scrappy band of ballhawks, and they showed that once again Friday while making their season debut in the big gym.

Down 6-0 at the start, the Wolves clawed their way back into the game, closing the first quarter on a 6-2 tear.

The surge kicked off with Coen Killian draining a three-ball from the top of the arc, then continued through Ty Hamilton slashing hard to the hoop for a bucket, before Killian came back around to net a free throw.

The second quarter was the one frame where Coupeville’s shooting touch vanished, and it hurt.

With just a pull-up jumper on the move from Dominic Coffman, the Wolves found themselves on the short end of a 9-2 stretch, and never were able to fully recover.

CHS made a stand, however, with both teams pouring it on in the third quarter.

After combining to score 25 points in the first half, Coupeville and Granite united to put 23 more up on the board across the eight-minute frame.

Four different Wolves banked home a bucket in the quarter, with the prettiest coming from freshman Nick Armstrong, who rolled under his defender, then popped up and nailed a jumper which barely rippled the net on its way through.

Coupeville got the lead back down to 10 early in the fourth, courtesy an Alex Wasik layup set up by a bullet pass off of Coffman’s magic fingers, but time eventually ran out on the young Wolves.

Hamilton finished with a team-high nine points, with Coffman (6), Brayden Coatney (4), Wasik (4), Killian (4), and Armstrong (2) also scoring.

Josh Upchurch rounded out the Wolf roster, hitting the boards hard and earning a nod of approval from his coach/father.

Long day, many positives

Chris Cernick had himself a day.

Drafted to help fill out the roster for a depleted Coupeville High School boys C-Team basketball squad, the Wolf big man responded in a big way.

Throwing down 35 points across two games, Cernick helped the Wolves KO host Granite Falls, and come within a play or two of toppling Sultan as well.

With the rare doubleheader split, Coupeville, which only had seven players to call on Saturday, improves to 2-8 on the season.

“We are growing,” said CHS coach Patrick Upchurch of his very-young squad. “Off-season will be big for some of these guys. It is only a matter of time.”

How the day played out:

 

Sultan:

Coupeville started strong and finished strong, but a little bit of a letdown in the middle cost it in a narrow 43-37 loss.

The Wolves jumped out to a 13-10 lead after one quarter, with five players tossing in a bucket.

Cernick led the way, pumping in five of his team-high 14, but CHS couldn’t hold on to the early advantage.

Sultan used 12-6 and 12-5 runs in the next two frames to turn the tide of the game, before Coupeville closed with a 13-9 surge in the fourth quarter.

Josh Upchurch and Dominic Coffman each banked in six points in support of Cernick, while Ty Hamilton popped for five.

Brayden Coatney (4) and Coen Killian (2) also scored, while Alex Wasik was aces on defense.

 

Granite Falls:

Cernick and Coffman combined to toss in 35 points as the Wolf C-Team set a season scoring mark in a 52-44 win over the day’s host.

Coupeville actually trailed for half of the game, staying close but finding itself down 12-8 after one quarter and 20-18 at the half.

Things changed after the break, however, as the Wolves more than doubled their output in the third quarter, using a 19-12 run fueled by six points apiece from Coffman and Cernick to claim the lead.

From there, CHS closed out the win by letting their big guy in the middle go to town.

Cernick wrapped up a career-best 21-point performance by throwing down nine points in the fourth, while Wasik, Coffman, and Hamilton added a bucket apiece.

Coffman finished with 14 in the game, while Coatney (8), Wasik (5), and Hamilton (4) rounded out the torrid offensive explosion.

“I’m extremely proud of them”

Their will to win is off the charts.

Deep on the road Monday, having left their best game at home, the Coupeville High School girls varsity basketball squad never flinched.

They might not be 100% sure how they got away with it, but the Wolves will take their 34-33 win, head home from Granite Falls, and move on.

With one relieved coach leading the way.

“Some nights everything stops working and tonight was that night,” said CHS hoops guru Scott Fox. “But the good news is that good teams find a way to win and we did.

“We had a letdown from (Friday’s) South Whidbey game and really never found our groove,” he added. “We fought hard and made the shots when we had to.

“I’m extremely proud of them finding a way to win.”

With the victory, its third straight, Coupeville rises to 4-1 in North Sound Conference play, 9-3 overall.

Up next, after a couple of days to re-find that groove, is a major test, as the Wolves head to Bothell Friday to face Cedar Park Christian.

The Eagles (5-1, 11-5) gave Coupeville its only league loss, beating them 51-35 two weeks ago.

The Wolves have added some battle hardening since that night, pulling out close wins over Sultan and Granite, wrapped around a methodical thumping of South Whidbey.

Monday’s win was decided by the narrowest of margins, as the two teams put up the exact same score in three of four quarters.

Knotted at 12-12 after the first quarter, the game stayed tied at 16-16 at the half, before Coupeville crept ahead 23-22 headed into the final frame.

Avalon Renninger was the difference in the third quarter, netting a pair of buckets and a single free throw, while Hannah Davidson chipped in with two successful shots from the charity stripe.

With the game on the line, it was Scout Smith time, as the senior point guard swished a pair of three-balls en route to putting up nine of her career-high 17 points in the final frame.

Coupeville’s leading scorer this season, she finished with four treys and continued her steady trek up the career scoring chart.

Smith’s point totals have gone up in each of her three varsity seasons, from 56 as a sophomore, to 86, and now 114 and counting.

With 256 career points, she passed Kendra O’Keefe (244), Marlys West (247), Danette Beckley (249), and Julie Wieringa (252) Monday and is #42 all-time for a program which stretches back to 1974.

Renninger popped for a season-high 10 to back Smith Monday, while Davidson (5) and freshman Maddie Georges (2) rounded out the attack.

Also seeing floor time for Coupeville were Chelsea Prescott, Anya Leavell, Carolyn Lhamon, Izzy Wells, Kylie Van Velkinburgh, and Tia Wurzrainer.

Clear eyes, full bench, can’t lose

Megan Smith had a lot of company.

With four varsity bench players swinging down to JV Monday to pick up some quality floor time, the Coupeville High School coach had 15 players on her bench.

And Smith used all of them, getting every girl in the game, getting scoring from more than half, and rolling to a 39-13 win at Granite Falls.

The victory gives the Wolf JV a nice bounce back after a narrow loss Friday, and lifts them to 4-1 in North Sound Conference play, 7-3 overall.

With a ton of players at her disposal, including newly-minted swing players Anya Leavell, Mollie Bailey, Kylie Van Velkinburgh, and Audrianna Shaw, Smith was able to mix and match all night, and every unit she put on the floor seemed to click.

Coupeville jumped out to a 14-6 lead after one quarter of play, with freshman Ryanne Knoblich dropping in six points to lead the attack.

After a defensive-minded brawl in the second frame, the Wolves edged their lead out to 18-9 at the half, then turned on the jets after the break.

Shaw banked in six points during a 9-2 run in the third quarter, before Gwen Gustafson popped for five to spur an 11-2 surge to close the game in style.

Knoblich earned game-high honors with 10 points, while Shaw (8), Gustafson (7), Leavell (4), Abby Mulholland (3), and Van Velkinburgh (3) also came up big.

Rounding out the scoring attack were Bailey (2) and Heidi Meyers (2).

Natalie Castano, Morgan Stevens, Ella Colwell, Claire Mayne, Jessenia Camarena, Alita Blouin, and Savana Allen also saw floor time for the Wolves, who return to action with back-to-back games later this week.

The CHS girls travel to Bothell Friday to face Cedar Park Christian, then hop across to the mainland on the ferry Saturday to play Port Townsend.
