“I am so proud of us and the bond we have continued to grow over these past years.

“I wouldn’t choose anyone else to share this night with.”

As she bid farewell to the Coupeville High School gym Tuesday night, Wolf volleyball ace Issabel Johnson shared the moment with teammate Grey Peabody.

The duo were honored on Senior Night, then went out and helped lead their squad to one of the biggest wins in program history — handing four-time defending state champ La Conner its first varsity volleyball league loss in 12+ years.

Along with the win, the emotion flowed, with Peabody returning the love to Johnson.

“A very special shoutout to Issabel, who has been with me through the beginning and has never left my side,” she said.

The sentiment was seconded by CHS coach Cory Whitmore, who has seen the pair grow from precocious freshmen to seasoned seniors.

“They bring such a great amount of joy to this group,” he said.

Issabel and Grey deserved to have a great night and they did,” Whitmore added. “I’m so happy for them.”

Grey Peabody will destroy you. (Kaitlyn Leavell photos)

The power of Grey Peabody compels you.

Thursday night’s varsity volleyball rumble in the wilds of Darrington was close for a hot second, until the Coupeville High School senior middle blocker unleashed Hell on the Loggers.

Mashing all the air out of the unlucky orb midway through the first set, Peabody turned a tense affair into a romp, propelling the Wolves to a straight-sets win.

Her spike, which made the walls of the Darrington gym quake and her JV teammates in the stands go bonkers, sparked a 25-16, 25-18, 25-14 victory.

That lifts the Wolves to 4-2 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 8-4 overall, and runs their win streak to seven straight heading into the biggest match of the season.

When Tuesday rolls around, four-time defending 2B state champ La Conner (7-0, 9-6) will arrive in Cow Town, where a hyped-up Coupeville spiker crew awaits.

The Wolves upended the Braves at the South Whidbey Invite earlier this season and came within a play or two of snapping their 12+ year league winning streak during a five-set road thriller in late September.

While CHS fell just short that night, that was its last loss, as the Wolves have gone 7-0 in October and are ankling for the best playoff seeding available.

While there are seven schools in the NWL, three are 2B and four are 1B, and it’s the matches against rivals in your own classification which determine playoff positioning.

Two of three 2B schools advance to districts, and in that battle La Conner is 3-0, Coupeville is 1-1, and Friday Harbor 0-3.

Upend the Braves Tuesday, then drub cellar dweller Friday Harbor for a second time in the regular season finale Oct. 26, and the Wolves tie for the #1 seed from District 1 and force a tiebreaker.

The four-team, double-elimination district tourney — from which two schools advance to state — starts Oct. 30 with matches on the home floors of the top seeds from District 1 and 2.

The remainder of the tourney is Nov. 1 at La Conner and the bracket (not yet filled in) can be found here:

Issabel Johnson and Co. are playing their best ball as the playoffs approach.

Tuesday’s tilt in Darrington, while not affecting Coupeville’s playoff hopes, did give the Wolves a chance to move back up into 3rd place in the overall league standings behind La Conner and Orcas Island (7-1), and the Wolves took advantage.

The first set was a back-and-forth affair, with the triple threat trio of Peabody, Lyla Stuurmans, and Mia Farris peppering Darrington defenders with nasty spikes as CHS clung to a 17-15 lead.

That was the moment when Peabody elevated and drove a stake through the heart of Logger Nation.

Her maniac mash sparked an 8-1 run to end the set, with Teagan Calkins coming up huge at the service line to put a cap on things.

Grey came up big tonight, attacking so efficiently and they didn’t have an answer,” said Coupeville coach Cory Whitmore.

“Her efficiency was impressive, but it was also how she moved the ball around.”

Teagan was also quietly efficient too, committing zero errors,” Whitmore added.

“She was big slowing the ball down with her block and then got back to the service line for a couple long runs.”

Darrington still had a little fight, bouncing back from a 4-0 deficit to open the second frame to claim a brief lead at 10-9.

Enter Mia Farris, lashing lasers, and exit the Loggers.

Peabody continued to dominate at the net, with Madison McMillan scorching slicers that carved their way through the defense and Katie Marti and Taylor Brotemarkle chasing down every wayward ball.

Madison McMillan filled up the stat sheet but was robbed of a brilliant kill by a blind ref, who insisted (incorrectly) the ball was out.

Calkins cracked off a lightning bolt on set point, and a lot of the air sucked out of the Darrington gym.

The final set was over, and over fairly quickly, with Coupeville getting big runs at the service line from Stuurmans, Calkins, and Marti.

The victory capped an impressive week for the Wolves, who knocked off non-conference foes Providence Classical Christian and The Bush School to lead into the Darrington match.

“We made it through a long week of three games with three good wins and we are pretty excited about that,” Whitmore said.

“Darrington always shows up tough in the first set and we had to battle back and forth with them,” he added.

“Their crowd really creates a rough environment to come into and be successful, so I’m proud of our focus and tenacity.”

Now the focus shifts to a new week and new opponents.

“Fun to see them play so connected and cohesive,” Whitmore said. “Through ups and downs, they never fractured or hesitated.

“We look to keep getting better each day.”

They’re on a tear.

Since coming dangerously close to ending four-time defending 2B state champ La Conner’s 12+ year conference winning streak in a five-set thriller, the Coupeville High School varsity spikers have rocked their foes.

The Wolves have won four straight, with win #4 coming at home Thursday against Mount Vernon Christian.

Coming from behind to nail down a 19-25, 25-13, 25-18, 25-15 victory, CHS improves to 3-2 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 5-4 overall.

Up next for the Wolves are back-to-back non-conference matches, with Providence Classical Christian (10-5) coming to Whidbey Monday, Oct. 16.

The next night, Coupeville enjoys a bus trip to Seattle to square off with The Bush School, which sits at 5-6.

Thursday’s win capped a week in which the Wolves won two of two in their own gym while dealing with all the side events associated with Homecoming.

“Really good team win tonight and super proud of the girls for their maturity as they fought through each set,” said Coupeville coach Cory Whitmore.

“MVC is much improved from previous seasons, and we knew we’d need to show up.”

The Hurricanes, who, like Coupeville, upended La Conner during the South Whidbey Invite, came out strongly, but the Wolves responded in kind.

“We played well even in dropping the first set, but MVC played very tenacious and very clean out of the gates,” Whitmore said.

“That’s the maturity and resiliency I’m proud of with the win tonight – they continued to trust and stick to our systems and just elevate it within the game plan, and it really panned out.”

Stellar play at the service stripe was key to the win.

“We HAD to serve tough tonight and that was where we came up big with all six servers,” Whitmore said.

“Our best set was the second, where we only committed two errors the entire set which is difficult to pull off while remaining aggressive.”

Across the board, the Wolves brought ferocious play to the floor.

Madison (McMillan) covered so much of the court and just pinpointed her serving locations tonight,” Whitmore said.

Katie (Marti) did a great job of distributing the ball. She made really smart choices and delivered the ball to her hitters, keeping them in rhythm.”

In particular, the fiery setter was on the same wavelength with senior slugger Grey Peabody.

Katie and Grey really connected, but Grey was so smart tonight with her ball placement and aggressiveness on the overpasses,” Whitmore said.

“She also had to adjust her block and made it happen on the fly.”

While Peabody slammed home 12 kills, junior Mia Farris was hot on her heels, peppering the Hurricanes with 11 winners of her own.

Mia had the offensive game she (and everyone) knew she could,” Whitmore said. “She’s been working so hard on her attack approach, and it popped tonight.

“She was zeroed in on the service line, and had such an air of confidence, there were moments that she truly took over the set.”

As Coupeville heads into Friday’s Homecoming parade and football game, and Saturday’s dance, the spikers are flying high, as they should be.

“They had to maintain a high level of energy and focus for a significant amount of time, and so I’m very proud of the way they pulled together to make it happen,” Whitmore said.

“Fun to get a Homecoming win.”

It’s 126 miles, one way, from Neah Bay to Coupeville.

So, when the Red Devils volleyball squad hopped on the bus Wednesday and endured the epic trek, they made sure to guarantee the trip back home would be a happy one.

While in Cow Town, Neah Bay’s varsity spikers played the top two teams from the Northwest 2B/1B League and bounced them both.

After opening play with a four-set win over La Conner, the visitors from a faraway land returned to the court and held off Coupeville 25-16, 25-19, 27-25.

The non-conference victories lift Neah Bay to 3-0, while the Wolves fall to 0-2, and the Braves — the four-time defending 2B state champs — crash to 0-3.

La Conner has already matched its loss total from last season, when Hall of Fame coach Suzanne Marble’s final run finished at 17-3.

Not that Coupeville’s players, coaches, or fans were all that concerned with the struggles of a new-look Braves squad.

Instead, they were focused on their own showdown with a 1B Neah Bay team which looks like it could make some noise come playoff time.

The Red Devils never trailed in the opening set, jumping out to a 3-0 lead, then keeping the advantage at 5-7 points the rest of the way.

Coupeville sputtered a bit at the service line, failing to launch any runs, but did get some nice sniping from Issabel Johnson, whose sharp work was hailed by Wolf coach Cory Whitmore.

Grey Peabody, who brought the thunder all night with a team-high 13 kills, delivered a couple of big-time spike winners to keep Neah Bay’s defenders on their toes, while Jada Heaton and Lyla Stuurmans combined to stuff a would-be spike.

Toss in a booming winner off the fist of Teagan Calkins, and Coupeville had its moments early.

Just not enough of them.

The Wolves found a bit more of a groove in the second set, taking the lead and holding it from 1-0 through 10-9.

Mia Farris mashed a winner which brought an appreciative yelp from the student section, while Peabody stalked the net like a regal lioness, daring anyone to try and hit it past her.

Most times they could not, as the CHS senior lashed winners which tore through a thicket of arms on their way to paydirt.

Neah Bay finally pulled in front at 11-10, though the Wolves fought back to force ties at 17-17 and 18-18.

Back-to-back winners from Peabody, following hot on the heels of a service ace off the electric arm of Farris made that last tie a reality.

But the Red Devils are both talented and consistent, and they quickly righted the ship, claiming seven of the final eight points to take the set.

Down two sets to none, Coupeville played its best volleyball in the third frame, leading by as many as eight points at 19-11.

Stuurmans and Madison McMillan were twin kill machines, while setter Katie Marti filled up the whole stat sheet, slapping a low, deadly kill of her own.

The Wolves couldn’t hold on to the lead, but did have a set point at 24-23, after knockout hustle plays from Taylor Brotemarkle and Peabody.

Brotemarkle slid across the floor for about 107 feet, likely peeling off a layer of skin during the slide, to save a runaway ball which turned into a Wolf point.

Then Peabody, while airborne and bending backwards at the kind of angle which makes writers feel sympathy pains deep down in their own battered spines, somehow reached just high enough to catch a passing ball with her fingertips.

What should have been a Neah Bay winner instead went the other way, as Coupeville’s veteran redirected the ball back over the net, spinning it through multiple defenders and catching the Red Devils flatfooted.

The visitors held off the ensuing set point, but it took them two tries before they could convert on their own match point.

The first one was denied by, who else, Peabody, who cracked one last winner before Neah Bay delivered its own exclamation point spikes to end the match.

Cory Whitmore imparts wisdom. (Jackie Saia photo)

Afterwards, Coupeville volleyball sage Cory Whitmore looked more than a bit exhausted.

He started the day off teaching in Oak Harbor and finished it in a different town, coaching, scouting (while being interrupted by passerby), and reffing the JV game, while answering never-ending questions regarding line judges, pregame music, and even the student section’s choice of spirit clothes.

But, as he pondered the match, and possibly daydreamed of drinks on a Brazilian beach, or at least being allowed to go eat dinner at home, Whitmore graciously took the time to answer one last round of questions.

Grey did a phenomenal job tonight, and Katie was strong, finding her and putting her in a good spot to attack,” he said.

Madison got to every ball and kept us in points,” Whitmore added. “She was just strong all-around, and it was nice to see Issabel come off the bench and deliver for us on her serves.”

And then the last light in the gym went off, and things momentarily hit pause.

For a bit, at least.

Practice beckons tomorrow, another match soon, and, to slightly twist a late ’80s country music hit — the road goes on forever and the questions never end.

Wednesday stats:

Taylor Brotemarkle — 12 digs, 1 assist
Teagan Calkins — 2 kills, 1 ace
Mia Farris — 6 kills, 18 digs, 1 ace
Jada Heaton — 1 kill, 1 block assist
Issabel Johnson — 1 dig, 1 ace
Katie Marti — 1 kill, 4 digs, 21 assists, 3 aces, 1 block assist
Madison McMillan — 1 kill, 10 digs, 1 ace
Grey Peabody — 13 kills, 2 digs, 1 block assist, 1 solo block
Lyla Stuurmans — 5 kills, 16 digs, 1 assist, 1 block assist
