The positive numbers keep piling up.

Eight matches into the season, Coupeville High School varsity volleyball players continue to fill up the stat sheet, making stories like this possible.

Seniors Alita Blouin (digs) and Maddie Georges (assists, service aces) and junior Grey Peabody (kills) top categories, while there are three-way ties for solo blocks and block assists.

Of course, with five regular season matches left to play, plus a likely trip to the playoffs, all of that can change in the days ahead.

As we hit Oct. 7, where the varsity spikers stand:

Not all losses are created equal.

Case in point, Thursday night’s titanic volleyball showdown between Coupeville High School and archrival South Whidbey.

The Wolves, a scrappy 2B squad who didn’t get the audience they deserved thanks to a rescheduled football game pulling fans to a different part of town, left it all on the floor.

But the 1A Falcons, who have been playing superb ball of late, were able to fend off CHS, pulling out a 25-27, 25-12, 25-23, 25-18 non-conference win.

The loss drops Coupeville to 5-3, with all three of the team’s losses coming against schools from bigger classifications.

Two of those defeats have been to South Whidbey, which is 7-3 on the season.

While his squad wasn’t able to overcome the Falcon big hitters, CHS coach Cory Whitmore was pleased with the grit his players showed.

“Besides our second set, I thought we played really tough defensively and found ways to generate points when needed,” he said. “We just came up short with the amount of points generated.

“It is tough to be strong in the back row for so long, but I was proud of the girls for continuing to focus there.”

Coupeville got big performances from several players, with Grey Peabody notching a career-high 17 kills on a .500 hitting percentage.

Madison McMillan was phenomenal on serve receive,” Whitmore said. “While Ryanne Knoblich really turned it up on her swing, taking aggressive swings, paying off to generate 13 kills.”

McMillan paced the Wolves with five service aces, while collecting a career-best 14 digs after coming into the night with 10 at the varsity level.

Coupeville has a couple of days to fine-tune things in practice before getting back into league play.

The Wolves, who sit atop the Northwest 2B/1B League with a 4-0 mark, host Concrete Tuesday, Oct. 11.

Rested, and ready to savage anyone in their way.

After some down time, including a rare weekend off during Homecoming festivities, the Coupeville High School varsity volleyball team returned to action Tuesday night.

And the Wolves marked the occasion in style, routing host Friday Harbor in straight sets.

Cruising to a 25-6, 25-13, 25-9 victory, Coupeville improves to 4-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 5-2 overall.

Next up is a good test of where the Wolves are, as they’ll host next-door neighbor South Whidbey Thursday in a non-league rumble.

The first time the schools met, in mid-September, the Falcons (6-2) slipped away with a hard-fought four-set win on their home court.

Coupeville’s win Tuesday stretched its winning streak to four matches and drew a nod of approval from coach Cory Whitmore.

“It was a good outing today on the island,” he said. “After a week without a match, we came out strong and focused, ready to go.

“Not only did we hit some goals with aces, but we also limited our errors on the serve and attack,” he added.

“Fun to get back on the game court and we are looking forward to Thursday.”

Alita Blouin — 7 digs
Mia Farris
— 9 kills, 2 digs, 2 aces

Coupeville’s varsity spikers played strongly Tuesday night but were nipped at Bothell. (Delanie Lewis photo)

They left it all on the floor.

Playing their second road match in as many nights, the Coupeville High School varsity volleyball squad opened like champs.

Unfortunately, the Wolves couldn’t hold off a late charge by host Cedar Park Christian-Bothell, eventually falling just short in a torrid five-set thriller.

The 20-25, 18-25, 25-23, 25-12, 15-11 non-conference loss drops Coupeville to 1-2.

The Wolves continue their road trip, but with a twist, as they head to Yakima for Friday’s SunDome Volleyball Festival.

Tuesday’s titanic tilt against a former league rival from back when Coupeville was a 1A school was a tale of two halves.

The Wolves, now a 2B franchise, were torrid early, only to lose the spark before being able to put the match on ice.

“Pretty tough one tonight, being on the other side of a reverse sweep,” said Coupeville coach Cory Whitmore.

“We played lights out in the first two sets, serving tough and attacking really well,” he added.

“In the third our errors began to fuel their fire and we got tentative on the attack which then allowed their offense to get rolling.”

Up two sets and leading 20-16 in the third, the Wolves were on the cusp of a major win.

But then the Eagles soared, and Coupeville, while not buckling, also could not put the finishing touches on a win.

“Our girls never gave in and battled, but having given them the momentum, we couldn’t put the ball down,” Whitmore said.

As he bumped across the darkened back roads of America in a school bus on the long trek home, Coupeville’s spiker guru was able to pick out highlights which bode well for the future.

Alita (Blouin) was something else tonight – defensively she was all over the place and covered so much area in serve receive,” Whitmore said. “A lot of fun to watch.

Grey (Peabody) got up on so many attacks tonight, always available on Maddie’s (Georges) sets,” he added.

“And Ryanne (Knoblich) had a great all-around game; she had a ton of receptions, strings of serves, kills and only one error, all the while racking in 17 digs.”

Tuesday stats:

Alita Blouin — 1 kill, 30 digs, 1 assist, 1 ace
Mia Farris — 4 kills, 3 digs, 2 aces
Maddie Georges — 1 kill, 14 digs, 22 assists, 10 aces
Taygin Jump — 7 digs
Ryanne Knoblich — 6 kills, 17 digs, 4 aces, 1 block assist
Grey Peabody — 9 kills, 1 dig
Jill Prince — 7 kills, 2 digs, 1 block assist
Lyla Stuurmans — 2 kills, 8 digs, 1 ace

The streak lives.

Since returning to the Northwest 2B/1B League in 2020, the Coupeville High School varsity volleyball team has lost to only one conference rival — three-time defending state champ La Conner.

Prepping for another run at the Braves, the Wolves opened a new season Thursday by proving once again they will be worthy contenders.

With several players claiming key new positions in the rotation, Coupeville dominated on its home floor, waxing visiting Friday Harbor 25-5, 25-12, 25-12.

The Wolves trailed exactly once in the match, and that was at 1-0 to open the second set.

Other than that, CHS was in control at every moment, something coach Cory Whitmore was pleased to see.

“We had good energy and communication, from the first point of the first set through to the last point of the match,” he said.

Whitmore praised the all-around play of senior leaders Maddie Georges and Alita Blouin, who kept the Wolf offense humming all night.

“I was very excited by our service return; Alita was all over the court,” he said. “That allowed our hitters to get on their routes, and Maddie was squaring up and delivering fastballs to them.”

Coupeville stormed out to a quick 5-0 lead with Georges firing off precision serves, and never looked back in the opening set.

The Wolves spread their kills out all evening, and the opening salvo was a stirring demonstration of what was to come.

Jill Prince, Ryanne Knoblich, Mia Farris, and Grey Peabody all delivered winners at the net, overpowering their opponents, while Lyla Stuurmans bounded high to collect a resounding, crowd-pleasing block.

Everything was working for the Wolves, whether it was Taygin Jump stalking the service line, or Madison McMillan closing the set with her own quietly ferocious aces.

If Friday Harbor saw a brief ray of sunshine up 1-0 in the middle set, that was quickly crushed by Prince unloading a roundhouse winner which made mom Jennie sit up and applaud.

Georges delivered another long run on serve to push CHS way out in front, but it was at the net where the Wolves really earned their cheers.

Regardless of how the lineup shuffled, whatever mix of Coupeville players who ended in the forward position were on their toes, and ready to beat the stuffing out of the ball.

Friday Harbor scrambled and fought, trying to keep rallies going, but the Wolverines had few answers for the laser blasts splashing down to their left and right.

Ending the night with a bang, Coupeville put together a crisp third set that featured more precision serves (Georges and Blouin led the way) and more big hits (Stuurmans and Peabody crunching in tandem).

The final punctuation note came from sophomore Jada Heaton, making her varsity debut and closing the match with an ace which hit hardwood and zipped away from a flailing rival.

Whitmore was able to get floor time for his bench as well as his starters, another huge positive on opening night.

“It was fun to get everyone in where we could, and they all contributed,” he said.
