Sometimes, no matter what you do, you can’t catch a break.

It has seemed that way of late for the Coupeville High School varsity boys’ basketball squad, which got emotionally knifed in the back for a second straight game Friday night.

Down by three with time running out, playing on the road, the Wolves forced non-conference foe Mount Vernon Christian to turn the ball over with 8.8 seconds to play.

CHS set up a play in the timeout, then ran it perfectly, with Joey Lippo hitting Hunter Smith, and Coupeville’s #1 scorer promptly drilling a game-tying three-ball.

Barring a miracle shot at the buzzer, the Wolves were headed to overtime for the second straight game.

Except…

Adding another layer of frustration to a season that has already had more than its fair share, the refs waved off the three, saying Lippo had narrowly stepped out of bounds while making the pass.

One Coupeville foul and two MVC free throws later, the Wolves headed home with a 54-49 loss despite one of their best efforts of the season.

The defeat, which came despite a season-best performance at the line and seven three-balls which the refs did count, drops CHS to 1-12.

Coupeville came out strongly, building a 17-15 lead after one quarter of play.

Lippo, Ethan Spark and Gabe Wynn each knocked down five points in the early going as the Wolves spread out the offensive load.

Wynn and Lippo drilled treys in the second quarter, Hunter Smith hit four free throws (Coupeville was 9-11 at the charity stripe as a team) and CHS went in the locker room up 27-21.

Unfortunately, the offense dried up a bit in the second half, allowing the Hurricanes to grab control of the lead.

But with the Wolves staying efficient from behind the arc, they stayed close up until getting their legs taken out from beneath them by the refs in the frantic finale.

Lippo and Smith each went for 11 to pace Coupeville, while Wynn hit for eight and Spark drained five.

Brian Shank (4), Cameron Toomey-Stout (3), Hunter Downes (2) and Steven Cope (2) rounded out the scoring attack, with Ariah Bepler chipping in on the defensive side of the ball.

And yes, if you’re adding that up, it equals 46 and not 49.

There was a similar issue on the MVC side of the book as once again road bookkeepers fail to match up to the standard set by CHS home numbers cruncher June Mazdra.

Hunter Smith

Your puny “rules” cannot contain Hunter Smith.

The Coupeville High School junior basketball sensation was named an Athlete of the Week by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association for his stellar play in his team’s recent win over Klahowya.

This, despite the fact Smith was honored four months ago, way back in week one of the 2016-2017 school year, for his play on the gridiron.

If you look at the WIAA “rules” for the award, supposedly you can only win it once in an academic year.

Rules were made to be broken…

Brian Shank (John Fisken photos)

One bucket.

Unable to come up with a game-changing one, the Coupeville High School boys’ basketball squad returned from Concrete bearing another ding on its shield.

Outlasted in a tough-nosed, low-scoring non-conference game Tuesday night, the Wolves fell 33-31, dropping their record to 1-8 on the season.

With Christmas break hitting, Coupeville is off until Dec. 30, when it travels to Orcas Island.

While negatives took their toll Tuesday — the Wolves were just 2 of 9 at the free throw line and tallied their second fewest-points of the season — CHS was consistent.

Unlike a lot of games this season, there was no big drop-off in one specific quarter to point at when scanning the post-game stats.

Coupeville dropped in eight in the first, five in the second, seven in the third, then rallied to its best showing with 11 in the final eight-minute stretch.

Hunter Smith tossed in 10 to pace the Wolves, while Brian Shank knocked down eight.

Gabe Wynn (7), Ethan Spark (3), Joey Lippo (2) and Cameron Toomey-Stout (1) rounded out the scoring attack, while Ariah Bepler and Hunter Downes also saw floor time.

Concrete (1-4 after the win) was led by James Schoolland, who went for a game-high 16.

Coupeville had three players knock down a three-ball, with Wynn hitting one in the first quarter and Shank and Spark nailing second-half treys.

Gabe Wynn scorched the nets for a season-high 20 Saturday in a loss to Vashon. (John Fisken photo)

Offense was not the issue.

Despite playing on back-to-back nights, after a long, late trip to Bellevue Friday, the undermanned Coupeville High School boys’ basketball squad put up its season-high in points Saturday night.

Unfortunately, visiting Vashon Island went a bit bonkers from behind the arc and rode 11 three-balls to a 75-62 non-conference victory.

The loss, which came despite Wolf captains Hunter Smith (25) and Gabe Wynn (20) combining for 45 points, drops the Wolves to 1-7 on the season.

Coupeville has a road game at Concrete Tuesday, then gets a nine-day Christmas break from competition.

The Wolves didn’t get in from Bellevue until 12:30 AM Saturday morning, and, with just eight players available against Vashon, had to push through tired legs and minds.

It seemed to sting them in the early going, as Vashon roared out to a 19-8 lead at the first break.

CHS senior Brian Shank was doing his best to counteract the Pirates attack, dropping seven points in the opening quarter.

It was blunted by three treys from Vashon, though, as the Pirates broke Coupeville’s zone with red-hot shooting and closed the quarter on a 12-1 spurt.

The Wolves mixed things up, extending their zone, then switching to man-to-man, but Vashon seized any little opening and was ruthless in torching the nets.

The lead grew to 40-24 at the half and 59-39 after three, before cresting at 25 early in the final period.

To their credit, the Wolves put together their most sustained run of the night after that, cutting the lead in half and preventing Vashon from ever being able to pull its starters.

Smith poured in 14 of his team-high 25 down the stretch, hitting five buckets, a trey and a free throw.

“Give credit to my guys — they worked hard and never quit — they just got tired,” said Coupeville coach Anthony Smith. “My team battled.”

Wynn did most of his damage in the middle two quarters, ringing up 15 of his season-high 20 in the second and third. He paced CHS with three long bombs.

Shank, who battled through foul trouble after his early hot start, finished with nine, while Hunter Downes slid seven through the twines and Cameron Toomey-Stout banged home a free throw to round out the scoring.

Ethan Spark, Kyle Rockwell and Ariah Bepler also saw floor time for the very-thin Wolves.

Vashon was led by Casper Forest, who netted 26, and Jacob Chavez, who hit for 18. The duo combined to nail nine three-balls.
