They will hurt you from everywhere.

Raining down pain on visiting Klahowya in the paint, out of the paint, sometimes from almost out in the parking lot, the Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball team closed its season Monday with a bang.

Paced by 17 from Hunter Smith and 15 from DeAndre Mitchell, the Wolves crunched the Eagles 54-39 to finish with a winning record in their first go-around in the 1A Olympic League.

The young guns won eight of their final 13 games, turning around an 0-5 start to finish 8-10 overall, 5-4 in league play.

They took the season series from both Port Townsend and Klahowya.

The Wolves came out running and gunning Monday like vintage ’80s L.A. Lakers Showtime, with Mitchell standing in for James Worthy and Smith dealing the ball like Magic in his prime.

Throwing down 11 points in the first eight minutes, Mitchell, huge grin flashing at his personal cheering section, was electric.

He opened the game with a sweet jumper, added a couple of free throws, then started launching three-point bombs from improbable angles (and making them).

Where Mitchell left off, Smith and Brian Shank took over.

Smith dropped back-to-back treys of his own to kick things off in the second quarter, as Coupeville took a 19-10 lead and stretched it out to 17 before the half.

When Klahowya tried to stop the ever-slashing Smith from getting to the hoop, he fed big man Shank, who has developed a more-dangerous game as the season has developed.

Primarily an outside shooter last season, the six-foot-one sophomore now shows confidence taking the ball aggressively into the paint and he tore into the Eagles with wild abandon, dropping in several key buckets.

Coupeville saved its most eye-popping play for late in the third.

Launching a break, Smith airmailed a pass down the floor, which hit Mitchell in the hand and deflected perfectly into the waiting grasp of teammate Desmond Bell, who shot to the hoop and laid it up.

Bell later dropped in a three-ball that was so flawless the crowd gasped as it tickled the net on its way down, and the Wolves closed with a crowd-pleasing pack of five freshmen on the floor at the same time.

With their female classmates screaming their approval at decibels rarely heard inside a building, James Vidoni ripped down a rebound and almost tore off an Eagles player’s arm, before Cameron Toomey-Stout dazzled the fans with a season-closing basket.

Shank finished with eight in support of Smith and Mitchell, while Dante Mitchell (6), Bell (5), Toomey-Stout (2) and Joey Lippo (1) rounded out the scorers.

Hunter Smith went for 13 in Coupeville’s win Tuesday. (John Fisken photo)

Once they got their sea legs back, they were fine.

After a bit of a rough start in the first half Tuesday (maybe the aftereffects of riding the ferry to Port Townsend), the Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball squad dominated, throwing down 34 second-half points en route to a 48-39 victory.

The win gave the Wolves a three-game season sweep of the Redhawks, while snapping a two-game losing skid.

The CHS young guns are 7-9 overall, 4-3 in Olympic League play with two to go.

When they did lock on to the basket, the Wolves got scoring from up and down their bench, with nine different players putting their name in the scoring column.

Hunter Smith led the way, dropping 13, while Dante Mitchell (10), Gabe Wynn (9) and DeAndre Mitchell (8) all got hot as well.

Brian Shank (2), Joey Lippo (2), Ethan Spark (2), Hunter Downes (1) and Desmond Bell (1) rounded out the offensive attack.

The mighty, mighty Mitchell brothers combined to haul down 18 rebounds and block four shots, while Dante pilfered seven steals to go with his 10 boards.

Shank (six boards, two blocks), Wynn (three boards, two steals), Bell (three boards), Downes (three boards) and Smith (two steals) were also busy.

Do you smell smoke? Cause someone is on fire!

Racing past host Mount Vernon Christian 58-47 Saturday, the Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball squad captured its fifth win in its last six games.

Using a mix of stellar defense (the Wolves zipped away with 20 steals) and electrifying long-range shooting (eight three-balls hit nothing but the bottom of the net), CHS surged to 5-6 on the season.

“The recent emergence of the long ball has given our offense a healthy jolt of energy,” said Wolf coach Dustin Van Velkinburgh. “We led wire to wire.

“These kids are playing for one another, with 100% conviction and maximum effort and having fun doing it,” he added. “I love to watch them play.”

Coupeville spread the offense around, with DeAndre Mitchell surging to the front of the pack with an 18-point, seven rebound, seven steal, two blocked shot performance.

Half of Mitchell’s points came via the long ball, as the junior rained down three treys.

Hunter Smith and Brian Shank both dropped in a pair of three-point bombs, while Luke Merriman chipped in with one of his own.

Smith hit for 10 points, while Gabe Wynn (8), Dante Mitchell (7), Shank (6), Desmond Bell (4), Merriman (3) and Hunter Downes (2) rounded out the offensive explosion.

Smith made off with six steals while Dante Mitchell nabbed four.

Merriman and Smith each had three assists, with Wynn hauling in four boards.

The young Wolves will put their three-game winning streak on the line Wednesday, Jan. 21 with a home game against Chimacum.

The Coupeville JV is 2-0 in Olympic League play entering that contest, with wins over Klahowya and Port Townsend.

Hunter Smith hit for 11 Monday as the Wolf JV boys avenged an earlier-season loss to South Whidbey. (John Fisken photo)

“I saw a different look in my player’s eyes tonight.”

Keeping their hot streak alive, the Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball team drilled visiting South Whidbey 59-46 Monday, making coach Dustin Van Velkinburgh a happy guy.

“We have had a number of solid practices in a row,” he said. “These kids are starting to come together and play for one another. They play hard and it makes it easy to coach them.”

The victory, the fourth in the last five games for the young Wolves, lifted them to 4-6.

It also avenged a season-opening loss to the Falcons, when Coupeville fell by 40+ at Langley.

“They were hungry,” Van Velkinburgh said. “We have been talking about shooting good open shots.”

And they hit those shots from everywhere on the floor.

Making his season debut, freshman Luke Merriman rained down four second-half three-point bombs, including two on consecutive trips down the floor.

When Merriman wasn’t shooting the rock, fellow frosh Hunter Smith was launching his own treys, hitting on three.

Suddenly marksmen from down town, the Wolves were able to open up the paint and let their post players rumble, snatching boards and putting back buckets.

Everything positive on offense was keyed by his team’s work on the defensive side of the ball, Van Velkinburgh said.

“I was especially happy with the play on the defensive end of the floor,” he said. “We played inspired. We fought for every loose ball and rebound alike.

“It was nice to see every guy who stepped on the floor tonight in a Wolves uniform taking pride in their defense,” Van Velkinburgh added. “It won’t show up in any stat book, but, if you watched the game, you would notice that we just flat out worked them tonight.

“I can’t be more proud of guys for that. It is something as a program that we preach and these young kids are beginning to buy in and see that hard work does pay off.”

Merriman paced the attack with 12 points, while Smith hit for 11 and DeAndre Mitchell pumped home 10.

Gabe Wynn (8), Desmond Bell (6), Dante Mitchell (5), Ethan Spark (2), Joey Lippo (2), Hunter Downes (1) and Cameron Toomey-Stout (1) rounded out the scoring.

The Wolves hit the boards hard, with Dante Mitchell hauling in seven, DeAndre Mitchell snatching six and Bell and Downes pulling down five each.

Bell also snagged three steals, while Smith handed out three assists.
