They found the end of the road, but not before a good, long run.

The last Coupeville High School girls’ tennis players standing saw their seasons end Friday with hard-fought losses at day two of the 1A District 1 tourney.

Senior singles sensation Allie Hanigan came within a match of playing for a chance to advance to tri-districts, falling 7-5, 7-6 on her home court to Abbie Steele of Nooksack Valley.

Hanigan placed fourth in her final go-round at districts.

“She had big leads in both sets but was unable to convert,” Coupeville coach Ken Stange said. “She had a heckuva year, though!”

Down the road in Langley, the duo of Jacki Ginnings and Wynter Thorne also claimed fourth, falling to a team from Blaine 6-3, 6-3 in a loser-out contest. The finish was far better than expected at the start of the tourney.

“They had a pretty impressive tourney, if you take into consideration the fact that they were the eighth-seeded team,” Stange said.

While the girl netters are done, Stange is still on the job, as Ben Etzell and Aaron Curtin qualified for state (May 29-31 in Yakima) as a doubles team back in the fall.

The duo may be doing double duty if CHS also makes it to Yakima (“the Palm Springs of Washington”) for the final four of the state baseball tournament.

Summer came to Whidbey and, one by one, the tennis players melted.

Playing multiple matches over the course of a sunny, increasingly hot day took its toll on a number of netters at Tuesday’s District 1 girls’ tennis tourney in Langley.

But, with proper hydration and bit of grit, all the Coupeville High School netters stayed on their feet.

And now three of the six Wolves who traveled down the Island are still alive and two wins away from advancing on to tri-districts.

Coupeville’s #1 singles player, senior Allie Hanigan, and its #2 doubles duo, Jacki Ginnings and Wynter Thorne, will pick up their rackets again Friday after battling back through the losers brackets.

Hanigan will face Abbie Steele of Nooksack Valley in an 11 AM loser-out match at Coupeville High School. Win and she travels back to Langley to face Alex Henderson of Blaine for second-place in the tournament and a slot at tri-districts.

If she makes the trip down-Island, she’ll join Ginnings and Thorne, who will face a duo from Blaine in a loser-out match in Langley.

If they survive, the Wolf duo face off with Ilsa Dubendorf and Bailey Gochanour of South Whidbey for second-place.

Saskia Dolk of Blaine and South Whidbey’s Amelia Weeks and Tess Radisch won district titles Tuesday and are guaranteed spots at tri-districts in Seattle May 21.

Coupeville’s other players — singles player Maureen Rice and the duo of Sydney Aparicio and Sydney Autio — were eliminated.

Complete results from Tuesday:

Singles:

1st Singles:

Allie Hanigan beat Kendra Warwick (South Whidbey) 6-0, 7-6(12-10)

Hanigan lost to Saskia Dolk (Blaine) 6-1, 6-4

Hanigan beat Yasmin Sarah (Friday Harbor) 6-1, 3-2 (retired)

Allie showed grace under pressure,” said Wolf coach Ken Stange. “That’s been the story of her tennis career at CHS. She wins more often than she loses.”

2nd Singles:

Maureen Rice lost to Colleen Groce (South Whidbey) 6-2, 6-2

Doubles:

1st Doubles:

Sydney Aparicio/Sydney Autio lost to Maddy Marinkovic/Ashton Simmons(Friday Harbor) 7-5, 6-3

Aparicio/Autio lost to Lily Olason/Gretchen Kordas (Blaine) 7-6(7-1), 6-1

“They (Sydney Squared) had a brutal draw, but they made their opponents earn each and every point,” Stange said.

2nd Doubles:

Wynter Thorne/Jacki Ginnings lost to Amelia Weeks/Tess Radisch (South Whidbey) 6-2, 6-0

Thorne/Ginnings beat Morgan Anderson/Kendall Calvert (Friday Harbor) 6-3, 6-3

Thorne/Ginnings beat Marinkovic/Timmons 6-7(4-7), 6-4, 6-0

Watching his #2 doubles team come back and take down a highly-favored Friday Harbor duo in their third match made Stange’s day.

“This match was a gut check. It was some of the best tennis either of them has ever played,” Stange said. “They cruised in the final set, even though both of them were exhausted from playing six sets already.

“I’m very proud of their effort. They deserved the win!”

Jacki Ginnings

The lineup is set. Bring on the Falcons!

After sitting for two days thanks to constant rain, the Coupeville High School girls’ tennis team decided the final two members of its six-player district tournament squad Saturday.

Playing in front of an impressive crowd for an inter-squad rumble, Jacki Ginnings and Wynter Thorne pulled out a barn burner win over Micky LeVine and Valen Trujillo.

The 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory propels Ginnings and Thorne into the #2 doubles slot for Tuesday’s district tourney at Langley, where the Wolf duo will face off with opponents from schools such as South Whidbey, Blaine and Friday Harbor.

While he wasn’t cheering for either side in an effort to be neutral, CHS coach Ken Stange was pleased with the hustle, effort and aggression he saw play out on the court.

“One of the things I enjoyed about the match was that all four girls were extremely competitive,” Stange said. “They played aggressive tennis and would even question a close call.

“However, throughout the whole match, all four girls displayed a genuine respect for each other,” he added. “Both teams took turns winning and losing, but the positive comments were constant from both sides.”

Ginnings and Thorne will join #1 doubles duo Sydney Autio and Sydney Aparicio and singles players Allie Hanigan and Maureen Rice in making the trip down-Island.

Ken Stange may need some time to unwind.

The Coupeville High School girls’ tennis coach saw his squad get not one, but two, victories in third set tiebreakers Wednesday, lifting the Wolves to a barn-burner of a 3-2 win over visiting Lakewood.

“It was tense for awhile,” Stange admitted afterwards.

The second straight victory for the CHS netters, as they head towards postseason play, it lifted the Wolves to 5-7 overall, 3-4 in Cascade Conference play.

It also gave Coupeville, the smallest 1A school in the state, a season sweep of one of the biggest 2A schools in the league.

McKenzie Bailey and Samantha Martin were the wrecking machine of the afternoon, strolling to a 45-minute win at first doubles.

“They outmatched the opposition and played very aggressive tennis,” Stange said. “They got off to a hot start, and Lakewood played on their heels for the entire match. It was a strong win for the sophomore duo.”

With three matches in the books, Coupeville trailed 2-1, then rallied in its final two contests.

Sydney Autio and Bree Daigneault, who was making her varsity debut, teamed to pull out a huge doubles win, before Jacki Ginnings iced the win.

Ginnings dropped her opening set at #2 singles, and found herself trailing 5-2 in the second set, then pulled off a comeback for the ages.

Battered by a recent battle with illness, the still-exhausted Wolf junior dug down deeper than deep.

First she roared back to rip off five straight games, then she held on for an epic 10-7 tiebreaker win with both teams (and their coaches) hanging on every shot.

“I told her that we just needed ten more successful extensive rallies–just ten,” Stange said. “She did it!

“Statistically speaking, most three-setters are won by the player/team who won the first set,” he added. “We won two matches today, after losing the first set. We bucked the odds today. The girls played their hearts out!”

Not even the combined forces of two schools can topple the Wolves.

Coupeville High School ran into its future Olympic League rivals, Port Townsend and Chimacum, Monday in its girls’ tennis opener and overcame the wind and the unholy union of Redskins and Cowboys, pulling out a 4-3 win.

With two wins in both singles and doubles, the Wolves avenged a loss from last season and had multiple highlights.

Freshman Valen Trujillo won her first time out, teaming with Ana Luvera for a key doubles win, while a former doubles player who has converted to singles won the first Player of the Match honor (it comes with a stylish necklace) from CHS coach Ken Stange.

Soccer star Jacki Ginnings played in several varsity doubles matches as a sophomore, teaming with Micky LeVine, but Monday she stepped on the court alone for the first time.

Having earned the squad’s #2 singles position in a preseason tourney, she more than held her own against a player not from her own team.

Jacki played with both aggression and finesse,” Stange said. “She gutted out a tough second set to earn her first-ever singles victory. Hooray for her!

“She opened big, playing consistent tennis as she cruised in the first set,” he added. “She was mentally tough, scrapped and hustled.”

Varsity:

#1 Singles — Allie Hanigan beat Frances Sheldon-O’Neal 6-3, 6-1

#2 Singles — Jacki Ginnings beat An Nguyen 6-1, 7-6 (9-7)

#3 Singles — Micky LeVine lost to Olivia Baird 6-1, 6-2

Micky found out she’d be playing singles about four days ago. She’s very athletic, and handled herself well against a player who was basically a wall. The girl just didn’t miss.”

#1 Doubles — Samantha Martin/Sydney Aparicio lost to Rachel Maki/Sara Allen 6-2, 6-4

“This was Sydney’s first-ever high school tennis match, and she, as well as Sam, played well. They may face some struggles early, but they both have skills and they both have high ceilings. I think they will find their groove.”

#2 Doubles — McKenzie Bailey/Wynter Thorne lost to Vy Nguyen/Casi Rowland 3-6, 6-2, 10-5

“This one was a heart breaker. They learned a couple of valuable lessons that will serve them well. They are going to be a fierce #2 team.”

“They were too much for their opponents. No matter who they play at #3, they’ll be tough to beat.”

Maureen and Haleigh took it to a couple of rookies.”
