JV spikers rebound, net big road win

A little bump in the road? No big thing.

Bouncing back from a razor-thin loss in its last match, the Coupeville High School JV volleyball squad delivered an epic message Tuesday night.

Invading the gym in which a dynasty was built, the hungry Wolves savaged host La Conner in straight sets, getting big contributions from everyone on the floor.

The 25-9, 26-24, 20-18 win lifts CHS to 2-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 3-1 overall.

While her team came up just short against Mount Vernon Christian in its last match, JV spiker guru Ashley Menges saw a big turnaround. And it pleased her.

“First set looked so clean,” she said. “We’re applying things we’ve learned in practice, things were going really well all the way through.

“Set two we let off the gas a little and got a little complacent, but it was a good lesson to learn how to dig ourselves out of holes.”

Coupeville had nine different players rack up stats Tuesday, a balanced effort Menges loves to see.

“Lots of really good things tonight,” she said. “Lots of players that are starting to show promising things.”

Menges praised the effort of freshmen Isa Mc Fetridge and Chelsi Stevens, who was placed in a new position “and did great filling in where the team needed her.”

The wham-bam duo of Dakota Strong and Lexis Drake combined for 14 kills, joining up with Capri Anter, who carved up the Braves for eight put-aways of her own.

La Conner often didn’t know where the ball was coming from, but they knew it was coming back over the net hard and fast.

“Dakota and Lexi had a really strong night at the net, being consistent as well as keeping their focuses that they work on in practice,” Menges said.

“Overall, lots of really good things and it’s always nice to walk out of that gym with a win.”

Hurricanes nip Wolf JV spikers

They won the battle and lost the war.

Playing from behind in every set Thursday, the Coupeville High School JV volleyball squad held off four match points and actually won one more point than visiting Mount Vernon Christian.

But the game of spikes and digs is decided by capturing sets, and not total points, so a 62-61 advantage couldn’t net the Wolves a win, as they fell 20-25, 26-24, 15-13.

The loss, coming in Coupeville’s home opener, drops the JV spikers to 1-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 2-1 overall.

The young Wolves proved to be a scrappy bunch but did most of their best work Thursday after digging a big hole for themselves.

CHS trailed 12-4 in the opening set, before sophomore Dakota Strong lashed a winner at the net to key the turnaround.

Bit by bit the Wolves got back into the match, picking up points on serves from Tenley Stuurmans, Ari Cunningham, and Haylee Armstrong, but were still down 18-14 when Capri Anter stepped to the line.

Dropping bombs on the Hurricanes, and getting some help from Stuurmans, who netted a sweet runner that dropped over the heads of a pack of defenders, Anter shoved Coupeville back into the lead.

Six straight points on serve gave the Wolves a lead they wouldn’t relinquish, with Cunningham and Stuurmans coming up big at crunch time.

The set-winning point was a note-perfect shot from fab frosh Stuurmans, who drew the defense in, flicked a winner between Hurricane players, then calmly strolled away, small smile on her face.

Tenley Stuurmans is here to deliver winners.

Unfortunately for Coupeville, as soon as it had the advantage, it gave it right back to MVC.

A couple of slow stretches offensively left the Wolves in another hole, this time at 13-7, before the hometown hitters once again rallied.

Adeline Maynes cranked back-to-back aces, coming right after Lexis Drake stuffed the visitors on a play set up by a great dive from Cunningham to keep the action alive.

Coupeville finally reclaimed the lead at 23-22, courtesy a strong run at the service stripe from Armstrong, only for MVC to escape and knot things up at a set apiece.

There were two ties in the final set, at 1-1 and 4-4, before the ‘Canes pulled away seemingly for good.

With things going to 15, and not 25, Mount Vernon staked itself to a 14-9 lead, only to see the Wolves mount a comeback that almost made it all the way.

With Anter peppering the visitors from the line, Coupeville held off four match points and had a chance to force a tie at 14-14, only to be denied by a ball which missed the endline by a whisker.

While the loss stings, the Wolf JV spikers, who celebrated Isa Mc Fetridge’s birthday Thursday, will get back at it.

Next up is a road trip to La Conner Tuesday, Sept. 24, then a home tilt with Darrington two days later.

Quick work, lopsided win

Only the siren call of the ferry could slow them down.

Playing second Tuesday, the Coupeville High School JV volleyball squad destroyed host Friday Harbor 25-7 in the opening set of their match.

Then the Wolves had to skedaddle, as the clock was running down, the Washington State ferry system was unreliable, and no one wanted to stay on a strange chunk of rock an extra night.

While the match was shorter than anticipated, the win lifts Coupeville’s second unit to 2-0 overall, 1-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play.

Next up is a home match Thursday against Mount Vernon Christian, with the promise that ferries won’t matter, and the entire rumble will go down before anyone has to call it quits.

Coupeville coach Ashley Menges would have liked to have seen her squad stay on the floor longer but was philosophical about things.

“It was good, we got to get a lot of players in, and we were just lucky we got to play at all,” she said.

“It was really fun to watch!”

“It was a great night and a great start to the season.”

The match was moved because of a flood that devastated the South Whidbey High School gym in August, but no matter the location, the Coupeville JV volleyball squad was on point in its season opener Tuesday night.

Playing at the local community center in Langley, the Wolves fired up coach Ashley Menges, fighting back to win in three intense sets.

The 25-14, 22-25, 25-8 victory launches a new season, and showcased strong work from the CHS veterans.

“My sophomores did a really great job with leading the court tonight,” Menges said. “Capri (Anter) had a great night.”

Anter paced the Wolves with a team-best nine kills, while seven of her teammates also picked up at least one winner.

“Consistency and aggression were great out the gate and lots of players had really great moments,” Menges said.

“We do of course have much more to work on, one being focus throughout the set,” she added. “But it was really fun to watch and saw a lot of really great things.”

Glover unleashes on Falcons

It took less than 48 hours to get some sweet, sweet revenge.

Playing for the second time in three days, the Coupeville High School baseball team toppled visiting South Whidbey 8-4 Wednesday, earning a season split in JV games between the next-door neighbors.

It was a nice bounce back for the Wolves after they fell 6-3 Monday to the Falcons.

CHS doesn’t have a complete nine-man JV roster, so a couple of different younger varsity players saw action in each rumble, and one of them was the big star Wednesday afternoon.

Sophomore slugger Camden Glover, who didn’t play Monday, reached base four times, drove home four runs, and was a holy terror every time he had a bat in his hand or was let loose on the basepaths.

Toss in strong work on the mound by the duo of Landon Roberts and Jack Farrell, who combined for nine strikeouts, and South Whidbey spent much of the day in a hole.

The Falcons actually led, briefly, at 1-0, thanks to a walk and a Wolf error, but then Coupeville surged ahead for good.

The Wolves knotted the score at 1-1 thanks to an RBI single from Glover, then tacked on three runs in the bottom of the third to snatch the lead for good.

Roberts bashed a single to get things going, with Carson Grove walking, before Glover (who else?) smoked a two-run double to left field.

The Falcons hung tough, slicing the lead down to 4-3, but the Wolves had a solid response at every turn.

Glover unleashed his third base knock of the game in the bottom of the fifth, plating two more runs, then came in to score on an error.

Coupeville’s final run featured Easton Green singling, scooting to second on a Falcon error, stealing third, then sprinting home on an RBI groundout off of the bat of Dylan Robinett.

Seven of the 11 Wolves to see action Wednesday reached base, while Aidyn McDermott, Nathan Niewald, Jayden Little, and Farrell put together solid at-bats as well.
