JV girls buried by three-ball barrage

It slipped away.

Locked into a tight battle for three quarters Tuesday, the Coupeville High School JV girls’ basketball squad couldn’t quite pull off a fourth quarter miracle.

Instead, visiting Friday Harbor used a 20-5 surge across the game’s final eight minutes to turn a tense tussle into a blowout and headed back to the bus with a 49-28 win.

The loss, coming in the Wolves first home game of 2026, drops CHS to 0-3 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 1-6 overall.

Coupeville hung tough for much of the game, trailing just 9-6 after one quarter and 17-11 at the half, before battling to a 12-12 tie in a barnburner of a third quarter.

Anna Powers and Ava Lucero each knocked down four points coming out of the halftime break to keep CHS within a couple of buckets before the dam finally broke in the final frame.

Friday Harbor stung the Wolves from long distance and did so repeatedly.

While the visitors couldn’t make a free-throw, going 0-3 at the charity stripe, they did splash home five shots from behind the three-point arc to bust things open.

Coupeville spread out its offense, with Lucero, Taylor Marrs, and Anna Powers each racking up six points, while Olivia Hall banked in five.

Zayne Roos (4) and Cami Van Dyke (1) also etched their names in the scorebook, while Willow Leedy-Bonifas, Emma Cushman, and Allie Powers all saw floor time for the Wolves, who return to action Friday with a trip to La Conner.

Long trip, strong effort

Time to knock the rust off.

Back in action after a nearly three-week gap between games due to the holidays, the Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball team hit the floor Saturday a long way from home.

Playing Morton-White Pass in a non-conference bout, the Wolves mostly held their own, but couldn’t quite get past their hosts, falling 52-42.

The loss drops CHS to 2-5 on the season, with a home game Tuesday against league rival Friday Harbor next up on the schedule.

The Wolves shooting touch sputtered a bit in the early going Saturday, with the visitors falling behind 14-8 at the first break.

From there, Coupeville hung tough, staying within 22-16 at the half and 37-26 through three quarters.

With Khanor Jump leading the way in the fourth, the Wolves closed with their best offensive effort of the day in the final frame, a good omen for the days ahead.

CHS got points from five players, with Josh Stockdale scoring in all four quarters as he racked up a team-high 13 points.

Liam Lawson (10), Nathan Coxsey (8), Jump (8), and Ayden Warren (3) also kept the scorebook keeper busy, with Trent Thule, Chris Zenz, and Brian Thompson rounding out the rotation.

Lucero torches net to fuel late-game rally

Give her one more minute.

Ava Lucero went bonkers in the fourth quarter Saturday and almost shot the Coupeville High School JV girls’ basketball squad to a stunning come-from-behind win against host Morton-White Pass.

Unfortunately for the Wolves the clock ran out on them, allowing the Timberwolves to narrowly escape with a 33-29 win despite being outscored 17-2 across the game’s final eight minutes.

The non-conference loss, coming in their first game since Dec. 16, drops the CHS young guns to 1-5 on the season.

Lucero and Co. will be back in front of their home fans Tuesday for a rumble with Friday Harbor, where they’ll look to continue their torrid play.

Saturday’s game featured a slow start for the Wolves, as they scraped out just five points in the first half.

Down 6-3 after a defensive-minded first quarter, Coupeville slipped behind 19-5 at the break, before going down 31-12 through three frames.

That was when things really began to click for the road warriors, however, with Lucero splashing in a pair of three-balls as she scored 13 of her team-high 17 points in crunch time.

Zayne Roos and Olivia Hall also chipped in with buckets, while a fired-up Wolf defense limited their hosts to just two free throws in the final quarter.

Coupeville, which was missing several key players, got points from six of the eight players in uniform.

Roos (4), Cami Van Dyke (2), Anna Powers (2), Taylor Marrs (2), and Hall (2) backed up Lucero, with Allie Powers and Emma Cushman also seeing floor time.

Young guns scrap until final buzzer

The second half was better than the first.

Bringing the 2025 portion of the 2025-26 hoops season to a close Tuesday, the Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball team fell 52-28 to visiting Mount Vernon Christian.

The loss, which drops the Wolves to 1-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 2-4 overall, got away from CHS early.

The Hurricanes sprinted out to an 18-5 lead in the first quarter, before stretching the advantage to 32-12 by halftime.

After that, however, Coupeville’s young guns held their own, virtually playing the visitors even across the game’s final 16 minutes.

Jayden McManus finished with a team-high 11 points to pace the Wolves, while Carson Grove netted six of seven free throw attempts while tickling the twines for 10 points.

Liam Lawson (2), Ayden Warren (2), Nathan Coxsey (2), and Khanor Jump (1) also scored, with Trent Thule, Josh Stockdale, Brian Thompson, Chris Zenz, and Jaden Flores Garcia rounding out the roster.

While the varsity boys have two games in Eastern Washington this weekend, the JV doesn’t return to action until Jan. 3, 2026, when CHS hits the road to face non-league rival Morton-White Pass.

On to the new year!

Playing their final game of 2025 Tuesday, the Coupeville High School JV girls’ basketball team ran into a buzzsaw in blue, falling 55-14 to visiting Mount Vernon Christian.

The loss drops the young Wolves to 0-2 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 1-4 overall.

And for Alita Blouin’s squad, it’ll be a bit before they get back into action against a rival, not playing again until a road trip Jan. 3, 2026, to face Morton-White Pass in a non-conference rumble.

By the time that game comes around, the Wolves will have had plenty of opportunities to move on from Tuesday’s tussle, while mixing some practices with the holidays.

MVC, the premier girls’ hoops team in the NWL, is strong at both the varsity and JV levels, and it showed.

The Hurricanes jumped out to a 16-4 lead by the first break, before steadily pulling away, turning a 27-6 halftime advantage into a 49-12 margin after three frames.

Cami Van Dyke and Ava Lucero led Coupeville’s scoring effort, each knocking down four points, while Olivia Hall and Willow Leedy-Bonifas rattled the rim for three apiece.

Emma Cushman, Zayne Roos, Finley Helm, Anna Powers, Taylor Marrs, and Allie Powers also saw floor time for the Wolves.
