Wolf JV hammers Hurricanes

They dropped the hammer. Again and again.

Pounding out serves with precision, the Coupeville High School JV volleyball spikers scorched visiting Mount Vernon Christian in straight sets Tuesday, sweeping to their second win in as many matches.

Now the Wolves carry that pristine 2-0 record into another home Northwest 2B/1B League match Thursday, when Orcas Island visits Whidbey.

Facing off with MVC, all nine Wolves in uniform filled up the stat sheet, which kept coach Ashley Menges beaming long into the night.

“It went really well!,” she said. “The girls played great throughout all three sets; our serving was very clean and yet really aggressive.

“Everyone played really well in all aspects whether it was clean passing or putting the ball away,” Menges added. “I asked of them to make the third set the best volleyball they could, and they definitely delivered!

While everyone delivered solid performances for the Wolves, fab frosh Madison McMillan was a particular focal point, compiling a team-high five kills, two service aces, and two digs.

“Madison had a great night!,” Menges said. “She had some powerful swings tonight, but my favorite was a perfectly placed out of system kill.

“The kid had some great passes and serve receptions; I’m very happy with how she played tonight.”

Fellow freshman Taylor Brotemarkle dazzled with six assists and a staggering 11 aces, while Issabel Johnson (three digs, three aces) and Katie Marti (three kills, two assists, three aces) were also on top of their game.

Mia Farris (two kills, three aces), Gwen Gustafson (three kills, two aces), Aby Wood (one kill), Jada Heaton (one ace), and Grey Peabody (one kill) also chipped in to the splendid team-wide effort.

Big serves, big victory

No mercy.

Smashing 40 service aces on opening night, the Coupeville High School JV volleyball squad scorched host Concrete in straight sets.

Despite playing with just seven players, the Wolves romped to a 25-8, 25-7, 25-6 victory Thursday, kicking off year two for CHS player turned coach Ashley Menges.

“I’m very happy that we’re starting the season off strong,” she said. “And I’m very proud of these girls for putting in so much effort through a hectic first couple of weeks.”

Coupeville pounded away at the service stripe all night, with freshmen Taylor Brotemarkle (playing on her 15th birthday) and Mia Farris dropping 13 aces apiece.

Fellow frosh phenom Madison McMillan added seven aces, with Gwen Gustafson (4), Issabel Johnson (2), and Aby Wood (1) chipping in.

“It was a night full of serving, which is great to see since we would definitely recognize it as one of our strengths,” Menges said.

“Playing with only seven girls, they adapted well and showed they can last and outlast,” she added. “With the few chances we had to work on our free ball transition and offense, the girls played very clean volleyball all night.”

Everyone on the floor racked up some sweet stats on opening night, with Brotemarkle dealing out nine assists, and McMillan adding two kills and two digs to her seven aces.

Gustafson (three kills), Johnson (three digs), Jada Heaton (two kills), Farris (two kills), and Wood (one kill) rounded out the strong team-wide effort.

The young Wolves get three straight matches at home after this, with Mount Vernon Christian (Sept. 14), Orcas Island (Sept. 16) and Cedar Park Christian (Sept. 20) all due to visit Whidbey.

The first two, like the Concrete match, are Northwest 2B/1B League tilts, with CPC being a non-conference rumble.

Young guns close with a vengeance

Clamping down on defense Tuesday, the Coupeville High School JV girls basketball squad closed its season with a huge win, drilling visiting Friday Harbor 27-15.

The victory lifts the Wolves to 2-3 during a pandemic-altered season.

While Coupeville’s varsity hoops teams will play 12 games, the CHS young guns had trouble finding opponents as only three of the other six schools in the Northwest 2B/1B League fielded girls JV programs this year.

But whenever they could get on the floor, Megan Smith’s players took advantage of the opportunity, and Tuesday was no different.

The Wolves steadily chipped away at Friday Harbor, before icing the game with a brilliant fourth quarter.

Up 5-2 at the first break, Coupeville pushed the lead to 8-4 at the half and 17-13 heading into the final frame.

Once there, the Wolves outscored the visitors 10-2 over the final eight minutes of the season, with Lyla Stuurmans, Madison McMillan, and Katie Marti all putting points on the board.

Having wrapped her second season as Wolf JV coach, Smith, a three-time CHS Athlete of the Year back in the day, headed to the exit with a smile on her face.

“Couldn’t have asked for a better way to end the season for these girls!,” she said. “Everyone gave me their best, and each player improved so much this year!

“Excited for the future with this crew.”

8th graders McMillan and Stuurmans paced the Wolves in their finale, both rattling the rim for eight points, while Jessenia Camarena dropped in six.

Marti (2), Kassidy Upchurch (2), and Morgan Stevens (1) rounded out the offensive show, with Kayla Arnold, Bryley Gilbert, Reese Wilkinson, Desi Ramirez, Pam Morrell, and Skylar Parker all seeing floor time.

Wolf JV en fuego to the end

They finished on fire.

Closing its season on a five-game winning streak, the Coupeville High School JV boys basketball team scorched visiting Friday Harbor 49-35 Tuesday night.

With the victory, which avenges a loss to the same foe back in May, the Wolf young guns finish 5-3 in Hunter Smith’s first year at the helm of the program.

While the CHS varsity has two games left on its schedule, neither Concrete or Darrington have a JV squad this season.

That meant Tuesday’s tilt was the finale, and Coupeville seized the moment.

Up 8-5 after one quarter, the Wolves turned on the heat in the game’s middle two frames, using 13-8 and 15-4 runs in the second and third quarter, respectively, to seal the win.

Coupeville put 13 players on the floor, with seven of them scoring.

Jonathan Valenzuela paced the Wolves with a game-high 20 points, netting a trio of three-balls along the way.

Logan Downes and Dominic Coffman banked in nine apiece, with Nick Guay (5), Ryan Blouin (3), Zane Oldenstadt (2), and William Davidson (1) rounding out the offensive attack.

Andrew Williams, Mikey Robinett, Cole White, Quinten Simpson-Pilgrim, Nathan Ginnings, and Alex Wasik all saw floor time for the Wolves in the finale.

Another day, another victory

The streak is a living thing.

Dominating host Orcas Island in three of four quarters Saturday, the Coupeville High School JV boys basketball squad captured a 45-38 win, its fourth-straight triumph.

The red-hot Wolves will carry a 4-3 record into their season finale next Tuesday, June 8, when they host Friday Harbor.

While the CHS varsity has three games left on its schedule, two of those schools — Concrete and Darrington — don’t have active JV programs, limiting the times the Wolf young guns get to play.

Coupeville took advantage of having an opponent to square off with Saturday, jumping out to a 13-8 lead after one quarter of play.

Freshman Logan Downes had the hot hand early, dropping in five points during the run, but the best was yet to come for him.

Orcas proved resilient, climbing back into the game and actually taking the lead before halftime.

A 15-6 Vikings run staked the home team to a 23-19 advantage at the break, but Downes was lurking in the shadows, ready to blow everything up.

Raining down pain from every angle, he promptly went off for 12 points in the third quarter alone, pushing the Wolves back in front at 32-29.

Once it had the lead, Coupeville held on to it, with six different players scoring in the final frame, led by Cole White, who nailed a pair of three-balls to keep the Vikings at bay.

Downes finished with a game-high 19, with White (8), Jonathan Valenzuela (7), Dominic Coffman (6), Ryan Blouin (2), Nick Guay (2), and William Davidson (1) also scoring.

Quinten Simpson-Pilgrim and Zane Oldenstadt rounded out the Wolf players to see floor time.
