Clear eyes, full bench, can’t lose

Megan Smith had a lot of company.

With four varsity bench players swinging down to JV Monday to pick up some quality floor time, the Coupeville High School coach had 15 players on her bench.

And Smith used all of them, getting every girl in the game, getting scoring from more than half, and rolling to a 39-13 win at Granite Falls.

The victory gives the Wolf JV a nice bounce back after a narrow loss Friday, and lifts them to 4-1 in North Sound Conference play, 7-3 overall.

With a ton of players at her disposal, including newly-minted swing players Anya Leavell, Mollie Bailey, Kylie Van Velkinburgh, and Audrianna Shaw, Smith was able to mix and match all night, and every unit she put on the floor seemed to click.

Coupeville jumped out to a 14-6 lead after one quarter of play, with freshman Ryanne Knoblich dropping in six points to lead the attack.

After a defensive-minded brawl in the second frame, the Wolves edged their lead out to 18-9 at the half, then turned on the jets after the break.

Shaw banked in six points during a 9-2 run in the third quarter, before Gwen Gustafson popped for five to spur an 11-2 surge to close the game in style.

Knoblich earned game-high honors with 10 points, while Shaw (8), Gustafson (7), Leavell (4), Abby Mulholland (3), and Van Velkinburgh (3) also came up big.

Rounding out the scoring attack were Bailey (2) and Heidi Meyers (2).

Natalie Castano, Morgan Stevens, Ella Colwell, Claire Mayne, Jessenia Camarena, Alita Blouin, and Savana Allen also saw floor time for the Wolves, who return to action with back-to-back games later this week.

The CHS girls travel to Bothell Friday to face Cedar Park Christian, then hop across to the mainland on the ferry Saturday to play Port Townsend.

They’re killers at crunch time

Crunch time is their time.

The Coupeville High School JV boys basketball team is liberally sprinkled with guys who love the spotlight, who live to (metaphorically) gut rivals and leave them to bleed out on the floor.

So Friday night’s rumble against South Whidbey, capped with an electrifying come-from-behind victory, while thrilling, wasn’t especially surprising.

But satisfying? Oh, absolutely.

Charging back from a 14-point halftime deficit, the Wolves used a 27-point explosion in the fourth quarter to KO their hosts 70-63.

Coupeville’s third-straight win, it lifts the JV to 3-0 in North Sound Conference play, 7-3 overall.

The victory is big in the moment. But it’s also a clarion call for the future.

With all but two players on this year’s CHS varsity squad being seniors, the auditions for JV players hoping to move up next year is ongoing.

And, to a man, the younger Wolves are letting people know — they’re coming, and they’re coming for all the wins.

Friday’s tilt actually looked like it might be a South Whidbey romp in the early going, as the Falcons eased out to an 18-8 lead after one quarter of play.

Coupeville got closer during the second frame, but still headed to the locker room trailing 35-21 at the half.

Enter X-Man.

Sophomore sensation Xavier Murdy, having recovered from a preseason injury, is finally back on the floor and splitting time between the varsity and JV.

That limited him to just two quarters of action in Friday’s undercard, but he made every second on the floor count.

After warming up with a quick five points in the third, part of a 22-13 CHS surge, Murdy went off for 14 in the fourth frame, keying a 27-15 run across the game’s final eight minutes.

X-Man drained 9-10 free throws to supplement a variety of field goals, but he wasn’t the only Wolf to sting South Whidbey at crunch time.

Cody Roberts also came up big in the fourth, banking in six points, while Logan Martin and Grady Rickner popped for four and three in the quarter, respectively.

Dominating play in the second half to a 49-28 tune, Coupeville finished the night with 10 of 13 players scoring.

Xavier Murdy led the way with 19, all in the second half, while Martin hit for 12, Grady Rickner notched nine, and Roberts sank eight.

Rounding out the balanced attack were Daniel Olson (7), Sage Downes (7), Alex Murdy (4), Miles Davidson (2), Chris Cernick (2), and Andrew Aparicio (2), while Alex Jimenez, TJ Rickner, and Chris Ruck all saw floor time.

Mark February 4 on your calendar, cause that’s revenge night.

After being nipped at the very end of a tense struggle with arch-rival South Whidbey Friday, the Coupeville High School JV girls basketball team is all about the pay-back.

The Wolves may have fallen 30-28, absorbing the first ding on their league record, but they’ll be ready for the rematch.

“I’m really proud of these girls and the work they have put in so far this season,” said Wolf JV coach Megan Smith.

“We played really hard and had some fantastic moments!,” she added. “In the end, they just outhustled us and came out on top.

“But we’ll get them when they come to our house!”

Friday’s loss drops Coupeville’s young guns to a still spiffy 3-1 in North Sound Conference play, 6-3 overall.

Back on the floor for the first time in a week, after surviving Snowmageddon 2020, the Wolves had a little trouble with their shooting touch in the early going Friday night.

Unable to hit from the floor, all CHS could rustle up was a free throw apiece from Ella Colwell and Abby Mulholland, and trailed 8-2 at the first break.

And then, in an instant, the Wolves flipped a switch, running off more than half their points during a 17-7 second-quarter explosion.

Freshman Gwen Gustafson flipped the nets skyward, dropping in six in the frame, while Savana Allen and Mulholland added four apiece, and just like that, Coupeville was in the lead.

Up 19-15 at the half, the Wolves were still ahead 23-21 after three quarters, and had their chances to take the game in the fourth.

While it wasn’t to be, CHS did get balanced scoring, with Gustafson pacing the squad with eight points.

She was joined in the scoring column by Mulholland (7), Allen (6), Colwell (3), Alita Blouin (2), and Ryanne Knoblich (2), while Morgan Stevens and Jessenia Camarena also saw floor time.

Wolf JV girls crunch Turks

They let them hang around for a bit.

But just a bit.

Putting the game away with a strong surge across the second and third quarters Friday, the Coupeville High School JV girls basketball team buried visiting Sultan 33-15.

With the win, the Wolves earn a season sweep of the Turks, while surging to a flawless 3-0 in North Sound Conference action, 6-2 overall.

Now, like their varsity counterparts, the JV girls won’t play in front of their home fans for almost three weeks.

Both girls programs have five straight games on the road ahead of them, not returning to the Coupeville gym until January 31, when Granite Falls comes to The Rock.

Friday night the Wolves came out a bit slowly, settling for a 5-5 tie at the first break.

After that, it was Turk crunchin’ time, as Coupeville used 9-2 and 15-3 runs across the next two periods to break things open.

CHS coach Megan Smith spread the offensive love around, with Alita Blouin and Ryanne Knoblich carrying most of the load in the second quarter, before Gwen Gustafson and Jessenia Camarena began to heat up in the third frame.

Blouin finished the game atop a very-balanced scoring attack, rattling the rims for eight points, while Camarena, Knoblich and Gustafson knocked down six apiece.

Savana Allen (4), Morgan Stevens (2), and Ella Colwell (1) also scored, while Claire Mayne, Abby Mulholland, and Heidi Meyers all played strongly on defense for the Wolves.

13 killers, one big win

Everyone eats.

That was the mantra Friday for the Coupeville High School JV boys basketball team, as 13 different players scored during a blowout win over visiting Sultan.

By the time the Wolves were done shredding the Turks 70-14, CHS coach Chris Smith had a full scorebook and his third win in the last four games.

With the victory, Coupeville’s young guns improve to 2-0 in North Sound Conference play, 6-3 overall.

The Wolves will carry their hot streak back into action next week, when they host Cedar Park Christian, then travel to South Whidbey.

Friday night Coupeville came out firing and never let up, raining down shots from every angle as it built a 21-2 lead after one quarter of play, then a 46-5 edge at the half.

With a running clock in the second half, CHS didn’t have time to put up as many points, but still closed strongly with 9-3 and 15-6 runs across the final two frames.

Grady Rickner paced the Wolf attack, netting a pair of three-balls en route to a game-high 12 points.

Freshman Alex Murdy was next man up with nine, while Daniel Olson, Sage Downes, and Logan Martin banked in eight points apiece.

Rounding out the scoring were Xavier Murdy (6), Miles Davidson (5), Andrew Aparicio (4), Alex Jimenez (2), Chris Ruck (2), TJ Rickner (2), Cody Roberts (2), and Chris Cernick (2).
