Who says you need to score in all four quarters to crush your rivals?

Despite going scoreless in the final frame Saturday, the Coupeville High School girls JV basketball squad strolled to victory in its home opener.

Bouncing visiting Orcas Island 30-15, the Wolves rise to 2-1 on the season.

Coupeville came out strongly, claiming a 10-2 lead at the first break, thanks to big buckets in the paint from Ella Colwell, and never slowed down.

While the second quarter ended in an 11-11 tie, a 9-0 run in the third sealed the win for the Wolves.

Up 30-13 headed into the fourth, thanks to Colwell and the hot shooting of three-ball wizard Natalie Castano, CHS was on cruise control, and, on this night, that turned out to be just fine.

Colwell paced the Wolves, going for a game-high eight points, all in the first half, while Castano netted treys in both the second and third quarters.

It was the first points this season for the newcomer to the Coupeville hoops program.

Alita Blouin and Ryanne Knoblich each banked in six points to aid the cause, while Gwen Gustafson and Abby Mulholland knocked down a bucket apiece to round out the offensive attack.

Samantha Streitler, Jessenia Camarena, Heidi Meyers, Claire Mayne, and Morgan Stevens rounded out the active roster, all seeing time for coach Megan Smith’s squad.

Different game, different hero.

This year’s Coupeville High School JV boys basketball team is very balanced, with scoring threats at every position.

On opening night, Sage Downes had the hottest hand. Jump forward a night, and it was Grady Rickner’s turn.

The lanky sophomore tossed in a team-high 10 points Wednesday in Oak Harbor, leading a pack of nine Wolves who scored in a 68-40 loss.

Five players, led by Rickner, nailed three-balls, but it wasn’t enough to save Coupeville, which fell to 1-1 headed into its home opener.

That comes Saturday, when the Wolves host Orcas Island in another non-conference game.

Wednesday’s bout was a rock-em, sock-em affair from the start, with Oak Harbor bolting out to an 18-5 lead after one quarter of play.

The second frame was the most high-powered of the evening, with the teams combining for 38 points.

The talented Wildcats held the edge in that one, as well, using a 21-17 spurt to push the lead out before the half.

Rickner swished a pair of treys while piling up his 10 points, with Cody Roberts, Sage Downes, Logan Martin, and Alex Jimenez also hitting from long distance.

Downes finished with six points, while Jimenez (5), Daniel Olson (4), Roberts (4), Alex Murdy (4), Martin (3), Chris Cernick (2), and TJ Rickner (2) also dropped their names into the scoring column.

Rounding out the active Wolf roster were hard-playing hustlers Chris Ruck and Miles Davidson.

A short turnaround and a talented foe.

That made for a rough evening Wednesday for the Coupeville High School JV girls basketball squad.

Back on the court for the second time in less than 24 hours, with both games on the road, the young Wolves fell 37-12 at Oak Harbor.

The non-conference loss to the 3A Wildcats evens Coupeville’s record at 1-1 on the season.

The Wolves now get a bit of time off, from games at least, with the home opener against Orcas Island set for Saturday afternoon.

Wednesday night, CHS stumbled out of the gate, falling behind 12-2 at the first break.

While the Wolves did better in the second and fourth quarters (6-2 and 6-3 deficits), a 13-5 third quarter hurt as well, and they weren’t able to slow down Oak Harbor.

“It was a tough one out there,” said Coupeville coach Megan Smith. “We just couldn’t find our footing and ended up playing Oak Harbor’s game instead of ours.”

While the final score was a bit lopsided, the Wolves had their moments.

“We’ve got some things to work on, but I also saw great things from our girls!,” Smith said. “Savana (Allen) and Ella (Colwell) really stepped up today and that was really fun to watch.”

Allen and Colwell dropped in four points apiece to lead the scoring, Ryanne Knoblich banked home a bucket, and Morgan Stevens and Heidi Meyers each added a free throw.

Gwen Gustafson, Claire Mayne, Lily Leedy, Natalie Castano, Jessenia Camarena, Samantha Streitler, and Alita Blouin also saw floor time for the Wolves.

Third quarter for the win.

Bouncing back from a seven-point halftime deficit, the Coupeville High School JV girls basketball squad blew the doors off the gym in the second half Tuesday.

Sparked by a 19-4 run in the third frame, which accounted for half their points on the night, the Wolves held off host Darrington 38-34.

The non-conference victory, coming on opening night, was the first at the high school level for new JV coach Megan Smith.

The #4 scorer in Wolf girls varsity basketball history, the 2010 CHS grad bounced up from a middle school coaching gig to replace the retired Amy King.

One game in, things are looking good for Smith and her young squad.

“We started out pretty flat, but came out swinging in the second half!,” Smith said. “I’m very proud of our girls, how we played, and how we handled ourselves in adversity.

“A pretty solid way to start out the season, and excited to see where we go from here!”

Playing after the varsity Tuesday night, the Wolf JV fell behind early, trailing 13-8 after one quarter and 19-12 at the half.

At that point, Coupeville had hit just a single basket from the field, thanks to freshman Gwen Gustafson, with the rest of its points coming at the free throw stripe.

The third quarter was a different story, however, as Gustafson and fellow fab frosh Alita Blouin lit up Darrington, combining for 14 points in the frame.

Blouin tossed in nine of her 11 in the third, including hitting a three-pointer, while Gustafson netted five of her team-best 12.

CHS got scoring from all directions, with Ryanne Knoblich banking home four of her six points in the quarter, and Ella Colwell slipping a free throw through the net to round out the offensive explosion.

Samantha Streitler, Morgan Stevens and Colwell finished with two points apiece, while Jessenia Camarena chipped in with three.

Whether they scored or not, all 11 girls in uniform had strong performances.

Heidi Meyers, Natalie Castano, Lily Leedy, and Savana Allen also saw floor time for Coupeville, which returns to action Wednesday with a game at Oak Harbor.

Balanced scoring carried the day.

With eight of 10 players putting the ball in the bucket Tuesday, the Coupeville High School JV boys basketball team roared to a 42-18 win at Darrington.

The non-conference victory, coming on opening night of the 2019-2020 season, kicks things off with a bang.

Coupeville came out firing, leading 10-5 at the first break, with Sage Downes peppering the Loggers defense for a quick six points.

The Wolf junior was lights-out from behind the three-point arc in the early going, netting all of his first quarter points thanks to a pair of sweet three-balls.

From there, the Wolves, guided by the steady hand of coach Chris Smith, continued to push the lead out.

Up 16-8 at the halftime break, CHS busted things open with a 13-2 run in the third, with Downes and Miles Davidson each dropping in four points to spark the surge.

A 13-8 fourth quarter, with six different Wolves scoring, put a nice cap on things.

Downes went to the locker room as the leading scorer, tallying 10 points, while the trio of Daniel Olson, Grady Rickner, and Davidson banked home eight apiece.

Alex Jimenez, TJ Rickner, Alex Murdy, and Cody Roberts rounded out the scoring attack with two points apiece, while Chris Ruck and Logan Martin also saw floor time.

The Wolves get right back at it in less than 24 hours, with a much-shorter trip to Oak Harbor set for Wednesday night.

Coupeville’s home opener, against Orcas Island, is Saturday.
