In the end, the Wolves just wanted it more.

Bucking all the odds, the Coupeville High School JV volleyball team pulled off a stunning last-second comeback Thursday, toppling visiting La Conner in three taut sets.

CHS actually trailed for 98.2% of the third and deciding set, before sending their fan base into a tizzy by pulling out a 25-21, 18-25, 15-13 victory to earn a home-and-away season sweep of the always-strong Braves.

The win lifts the young Wolves to 5-2 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 7-3 overall, as they continue to be the most successful fall sports team in Cow Town this season.

Having dropped the second set, Coupeville seemed to be in trouble as the final frame played out, falling behind 6-1 to start things.

A service ace off the fingertips of Cassandra Powers and a ferocious spike winner from Sydney Van Dyke provided a brief glimmer of hope for the Wolves, but La Conner was relentless, methodically pushing towards the win.

Until one eye-popper of a play seemed to change everything.

Playing a ball on the carom off the basketball hoop which loomed overhead, Willow Leedy-Bonifas flicked a winner over her shoulder and the Braves crumbled.

That pulled CHS to within 13-12, and with Van Dyke striding to the service stripe, the Wolves promptly ripped off three straight points to tie, take the lead, and clinch the win.

The furious finale capped a night in which Coupeville sparkled in the first set and survived in the second.

Chelsi Stevens and Kennedy O’Neill controlled the action at the net in the early going, while Van Dyke was a whirlwind, peppering La Conner with unhittable serves, then sliding across the floor to make last-second saves.

Coupeville claimed the first set lead at 4-3 and never relented, with Isa Mc Fetridge sealing things with a four-point run on her serve.

The second set went in waves and surges, as La Conner roared out to an 11-4 lead, the Wolves mounted a comeback to get back within 17-16, then the Braves pulled away.

Powers had one of the best plays of the match with a one-armed save, throwing out her limb at the last second to redirect the ball through a forest of rival players, while Stevens, Mc Fetridge, and Van Dyke racked up a variety of winners on spikes and tips.

In the aftermath of the win, Coupeville coaches praised the grit of their team, while sending some special praise to sparkplug Olivia Martin for her “willingness to play every position we ask her to, and tackle every challenge.”

Thursday stats:

Willow Leedy-Bonifas — 1 kill, 7 digs, 1 solo block

Slow start, scorching hot finish.

Coming alive in the second and third quarters Friday night, the Coupeville High School JV girls’ basketball team overcome an early deficit, then blew visiting Friday Harbor off the floor.

Romping to a 45-25 win in their season finale, Scout Smith’s hardwood heroes got to 5-4 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 6-7 overall while showcasing their talents as they seek fulltime employment at the varsity level in the future.

Their leader, wrapping her first season on the sideline, came away pleased with the growth she saw.

“This game was a great culmination of all we have worked on this season,” Smith said. “I am extremely proud of the entire team.

“We executed our systems well on offense and defense.

“Huge shoutout to the whole team for the work and effort they put in this whole season.”

The finale started in favor of Friday Harbor, which used its superior height to get out to a 9-2 lead by the first break.

After that, it was all Wolves, all the time.

“We ramped up the intensity in the second and third quarters and caused turnovers defensively and got quick buckets on offense,” Smith said.

Swing player Haylee Armstrong led the way, dropping in 20 of her game-high 22 points across the game’s middle 16 minutes.

With the sophomore sniper popping three-balls, and getting some help from Lexis Drake in that part of the attack, Coupeville pulled ahead 17-13 by halftime, before unleashing hardwood death ‘n destruction in the third frame.

A 20-4 surge right after halftime blew the game wide open, allowing CHS to carry a 37-17 advantage into the fourth quarter, and Friday Harbor had few answers by that point.

Freshman Adeline Maynes, who led Coupeville in scoring this season, knocked down 14 points to back up Armstrong’s 22, while Sydney Van Dyke (4), Drake (3), and Ava Lucero (2) also scored.

Amelia Crowder, Chelsi Stevens, Jeann Nitta, Capri Anter, and Marin Winger all saw floor time as well for the Wolves.

It was a tale of two halves – with one much better than the other.

The Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball team brought its season to a close Friday night, falling 51-26 to visiting Friday Harbor in a game which got away from the young Wolves.

CHS, which finishes 4-5 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 5-8 overall, played strongly in the first half, but cold shooting after halftime doomed any hopes for the hometown squad.

The Wolves trailed just 10-6 after one quarter of action, with Mahkai Myles rattling the rim for a pair of three-balls to account for all of his team’s scoring.

From there, Friday Harbor edged Coupeville 13-12 in the second frame, before slamming its collective feet through the gas pedal in the third and fourth quarters,

A 15-8 Wolverine run coming out of the halftime break hurt, while a 13-0 romp in the final frame made the game score seem much more lopsided than it had earlier.

Malachi Somes split time between varsity and JV, providing scrappy defense at every level.

Myles and Riley Lawless led CHS with eight points apiece, while Jayden Little (3), Malachi Somes (3), Easton Green (2), and Davin Houston (2) also scored.

Little rippled the nets for his first three-ball of the season to give his point total a little extra spicy flavor.

Kyle McCrimmon, Khanor Jump, Liam Blas, Sage Arends, Carson Grove, and Nathan Coxsey also saw floor time for a young squad which often looked very good this season.

While the finale wasn’t what the Wolves might have hoped for, the future remains bright.

Final season scoring stats:

Davin Houston – 92
Mahkai Myles – 68
Riley Lawless – 67
Easton Green – 53
Carson Grove – 49
Liam Blas – 42
Malachi Somes – 40
Sage Arends – 34
Khanor Jump – 17
Nathan Coxsey – 10

Sydney Van Dyke ponders the mysteries of the universe. (Teagan Calkins photos)

“We will continue to learn and adapt from this game to improve our craft.”

Coupeville High School JV girls’ basketball guru Scout Smith had a philosophical attitude as she surveyed the aftermath of her team’s 53-28 loss at La Conner Friday night.

While the score wasn’t what she wanted, the effort was there, and bright spots could be found.

“We faced off against a well-orchestrated (team) that ran the floor well and moved the ball with efficiency,” Smith said.

“Although we made improvements from the last time we faced off against them, ultimately their speed and decisiveness offensively overpowered us.

“We have one more week to grow and improve.”

Adeline Maynes pushes the ball up the floor.

Now 4-4 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 5-7 overall, the young Wolves close the campaign next Friday, Feb. 7, when they host Friday Harbor.

Coupeville will be coming off a game in which its defense got stronger as the game played out, holding La Conner to fewer points in each ensuing quarter.

Still, the Braves jumped out to a solid 19-11 lead after one frame, before stretching their advantage to 34-19 when halftime rolled around.

From there, La Conner made it 44-24 through three quarters, strolling in with the victory.

Wolf freshman Adeline Maynes led her squad with nine points, including hitting five of six free throws.

Ava Lucero (7), Capri Anter (5), Lexis Drake (3), Haylee Armstrong (3), and Sydney Van Dyke (1) rounded out the offensive fireworks, with Chelsi Stevens and Amelia Crowder also seeing floor time for CHS.

Drake and Lucero each knocked down a three-ball during their time on the hardwood.
