They lost to the best.

The Coupeville High School volleyball squad only came up short against one other 2B school this fall, and that rival ended up once again ruling the state.

La Conner, which handed the Wolves three of their six losses — the other defeats came in non-conference tilts with 1A schools — clinched a third-straight 2B state title Friday.

The Braves, who finished 22-0, didn’t drop a set in sweeping through four matches at the Yakima Valley SunDome.

The 2021 title follows on the heels of similar wins in 2019 and 2018. There was no postseason in 2020, due to Covid.

La Conner previously claimed the crown in 2002, 2006, and 2007, all under current coach Suzanne Marble.

The Braves swept through their foes, knocking off Rainier (25-7, 25-13, 25-7) and Okanogan (25-18, 25-14, 25-7) Thursday.

Then came Friday wins over Manson and Walla Walla Valley (25-15, 25-13, 25-12) in the semifinals and final, respectively.

Manson beat Raymond in the 3rd/4th match, with Colfax (5th), Goldendale (6th), Liberty (Spangle) (7th), and Adna (8th) rounding out award winners.

Darrington has busy day:

While La Conner claimed the only ticket out of District 1/2 to the 2B state tourney, leaving Coupeville a match short, the third-place team in the Northwest 2B/1B League also advanced to the big dance.

Taking advantage of a more wide-open field in 1B, Darrington earned a shot and turned it into a three-match adventure.

The Loggers opened Thursday with a 3-0 win over Evergreen Lutheran, before falling 3-0 to #1 Oakesdale and 3-2 to Pomeroy to be eliminated.

There’s one roadblock in their way, but it’s a fairly-imposing one.

Since returning to 2B with the 2020-2021 school year, the Coupeville High School volleyball team has gone 17-9 overall, 16-5 in Northwest 2B/1B League play.

But, standing in the way of the Wolves is La Conner, which is 18-0 this season and rolling to a possible third-straight state crown.

After falling to the Braves Wednesday in the District 1/2 tourney championship match, the Wolves are 0-6 against La Conner the past two seasons, 17-3 against the rest of the world.

Those other three defeats came in non-conference bouts against 1A schools, leaving the Braves as the only 2B team Coupeville has lost to since returning to the classification.

Wednesday night’s district tourney, a three-team affair held at La Conner, opened with Coupeville facing off with Auburn Adventist Academy.

The Wolves controlled things from start to finish against the only 2B school from the 1B Sea-Tac League, winning 25-15, 25-20, 25-13.

But, after a short break, Coupeville, which was playing without setter and team captain Maddie Georges, was unable to slow down La Conner’s roll.

The Braves cruised to a 25-6, 25-13, 25-12 victory to earn the lone ticket to the state tourney, which runs Nov. 11-12 at the Yakima Valley SunDome.

Coupeville finishes 11-6, the fifth time in six seasons the Wolves have won 11 or more matches under coach Cory Whitmore.

The only blip on that record came last season, when Covid allowed CHS to play just nine times.

Wednesday’s opening match came against a foe Coupeville had no familiarity with, but the Wolves adjusted quickly.

“It was a fun win against Auburn Adventist,” Whitmore said. “Our serve receive was very consistent and ahead of the ball the entire match.

“This allowed Katie Marti to deliver some really well-delivered sets to our hitters,” he added. “Katie got better every day this season, and, when her chance came, she was ready, and I’m proud of her patient growth.”

Marti, a freshman, stepped in for Georges, who was ill, and held up extremely well at a high-pressure position.

Katie got the ball really well to our middles (Jill Prince and Olivia Schaffeld), who hit for a high efficiency,” Whitmore said.

Lyla Stuurmans (on the outside) had a strong performance hitting edges of the ball really well,” he added. “We controlled a lot of free balls sent our way because of our well-placed and tough serving game.”

Lyla Stuurmans was one of four freshmen to play varsity this season.

The nightcap was largely what the Wolves expected, as they came hard on every ball, but had trouble with the overwhelming power at La Conner’s disposal.

“They make you really earn your points, and while our serving was still strong, they have offensive weapons to send it back,” Whitmore said. “Again, our passing was pretty strong and our energy picked up as the match went on.”

La Conner loses six seniors, though the state’s best 2B player, Ellie Marble, still has a season left to wear a Braves uniform.

By contrast, Coupeville can return its entire roster next year, as the Wolves have no seniors and played four freshmen, two sophomores, and six juniors this season.

Half of the starting lineup Wednesday — Stuurmans, Marti, and Savina Wells — are just 9th graders.

“All-in-all, happy for the girls and this season, getting back to being played in the fall,” Whitmore said.

“We look forward to the fact we don’t have one senior, and will make some aggressive moves in the off-season building upon a strong foundation of experience this season.”

The Wolves need two wins in one night to advance to state.

Three teams enter, one exits with a ticket to state.

This year’s version of the district volleyball playoffs is a fairly streamlined affair, with just two matches being played.

Coupeville and Auburn Adventist Academy face off at 5 PM Wednesday, Nov. 3 at La Conner High School in a loser-out match to kick things off.

The winner returns to the floor at 7:30 to play the tourney hosts, who happen to be the two-time defending 2B state champs.

Barring a major upset, the Braves then head off to Yakima to defend their crown.

Coupeville fans already know La Conner well, but Auburn Adventist is a different thing.

The Falcons are the lone 2B school playing in the 1B Sea-Tac League, and finished third out of 10 schools this season.

Auburn handed the league’s top team, Crosspoint Academy, its only conference loss, yet was swept in straight sets by Coupeville’s Northwest 2B/1B League mate Darrington in a non-conference tilt.

With Coupeville having squashed the Loggers both times they played this season, that seems to be a positive for the Wolves.

But, it’s the playoffs, so anything goes.

Taylor Brotemarkle and the Coupeville JV fear no player, and no team. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

They won the battle, but lost the war.

The best volleyball match of the season went down Tuesday in the Coupeville High School gym, a JV battle royal which came within a whisker of giving La Conner’s second unit its first league loss in 20+ seasons.

The fans were engaged, the players were rowdy and rambunctious, and every point mattered in a thriller in which, in one way, the Wolves came out on top.

Coupeville actually won more games than visiting La Conner — 62-59 — but ultimately fell 26-24, 18-25, 15-13 in three titanic sets.

The loss drops CHS to 8-2 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 10-3 overall, but serves as a warning to the Braves.

The young Wolf crew fears no one, and no team, no matter how vaunted their reputation may be.

Led by CHS player-turned-coach Ashley Menges, the Wolf JV is winning, it is fighting for every single point, and it is preparing its players for the eventual jump to varsity.

And, once they get there, these spikers will enter each gym, their own or ones on the road, expecting to be competitive every single night, regardless of the name on the other jerseys.

Tuesday’s tilt was proof of that, as the Wolves proved they could roar from behind, run in front, or stand in the middle of the floor and swap haymakers.

After falling behind 7-4 in the opening set, Coupeville fought back to force four ties, the final one at 22-22.

The play of the match came when hard-charging freshman Katie Marti made a miracle save while on the floor.

Staring at the other player’s shoes, she still managed to get several fingers on the volleyball, converting it from a runaway to a suddenly perfectly-placed winner, all with the flick of her wrist while still prone.

That helped spark a nice run at the service stripe from teammate Gwen Gustafson, while Marti came back around to deliver the ace which staked Coupeville to a 23-22 lead, its first advantage since 1-0.

Katie Marti was a whirlwind Tuesday, pulling off big play after big play, as usual.

La Conner’s JV, which doesn’t hit as hard as its varsity counterparts, but does take after them in terms of committing few errors, found a way to wriggle out of the first frame, but set two belonged to the Wolves.

Madison McMillan broke things open with a run of six straight points on her serve, aided by two big winners off of the deadly fingertips of Grey Peabody, and CHS never trailed in the middle set.

Each time a play went Coupeville’s way, the girls on the floor, and the girls on the bench, roared loud enough to be heard up in Oak Harbor, and the fans in attendance backed them.

Issabel Johnson’s mom, in particular, was a standout, raising the roof for both her daughter and every one of her daughter’s teammates, from Jada Heaton to Mia Farris and beyond.

It was Aby Wood who punctuated things, crunching a spike which went right to left and caught the very last flake of paint on the line for a crucial point.

La Conner got back to within 19-17, but the Wolves closed things out like cold-blooded killers, with Marti smacking a nasty ace, and Gustafson unleashing her full fury on a shot which sliced ‘n diced anyone foolhardy enough to get in its way.

With the match riding on the line, the final set — a mad dash to 15 points — featured eight different ties, while neither team led by more than two points at any time.

Coupeville’s final advantage was at 12-11, coming after Farris and McMillan pasted back-to-back winners, but La Conner found a way to wiggle away one final time.

The Wolves held off one match point, even with two players colliding while both were going for the third, and final, hit on a rally.

To the surprise of all involved, the ball not only still went over the net, but skipped away from the defense once it did, pulling CHS within 14-13.

While they couldn’t pull out what would have been a landmark win, the JV did make a huge statement to their rivals, their fans, and, ultimately themselves.

These Wolves are hungry, and they’re planning to chomp everyone in their way.

Tuesday stats:

Taylor Brotemarkle — 1 kill, 2 digs, 7 assists, 4 aces
Mia Farris — 2 kills, 1 assist, 1 solo block
Gwen Gustafson — 5 kills, 10 digs, 2 aces
Isabel Johnson — 5 digs, 1 ace
Katie Marti — 2 kills, 3 digs, 7 assists, 2 aces
Madison McMillan — 3 kills, 10 digs, 2 assists, 2 aces
Grey Peabody — 5 kills
Aby Wood — 1 kill
