The match ended the only way it could — with a bang.

Rising off the floor in unison, Wolf teammates Katrina McGranahan and Lauren Grove teamed up to emphatically stuff a would-be spike from Bellevue Christian, sending the ball skidding off the floor and their teammates jumping into each others arms.

The 25-15, 25-22, 15-13 win Tuesday over the visiting Vikings lifted the Coupeville High School JV spikers to 2-2 and left coach Amy King sporting a smile.

And why not? Her squad played inspired ball for much of the match, controlling play and pulling off several superb plays.

While the joint stuff at the end rattled the building, the final point of the first set was probably even more beautiful.

Allison Wenzel, sliding across the floor, sliced a service return that skidded across the net, tiptoed through three Vikings and caught the very last flake of paint on the sideline for a winner that got the biggest roar of the night from the crowd.

It capped a first set that started as a runaway (the Wolves jumped out to an 18-4 lead behind precision serving from Payton Aparicio and McGranahan and back-to-back gorgeous, point-winning tips off the fingertips of Kameryn St Onge), turned a bit sticky, then got back on track.

Holding things together was Grove, who calmly directed traffic, at least when she was on her feet.

Willing to sacrifice her body for the good of the team, she frequently risked life and limb chasing balls, usually saving even the ones dead set on getting away.

The next two sets played out remarkably similar for the Wolves.

They jumped on Bellevue quickly, let up a bit, then put the other foot down. Hard.

The second set opened with Maggie Crimmins dropping in a string of winners on serve, before McGranahan unleashed a spike that seemed to be flying out of bounds, only to catch the very back corner of the court at the last second.

As the linesman jumped and waved like a madman, unable to fully believe the miracle he had witnessed, the last ounce of strength crumbled  from the Vikings.

Bellevue briefly rallied, but Aparicio was lights-out at the service stripe, denying that dream.

From there, Coupeville cruised home with the win, getting several big-time plays in the final set.

Grove won a frantic tip-fest at the net in which both sides ricocheted the ball back-and-forth for several moments before the Wolf sophomore deposited a winner just out of reach of her counterparts.

St Onge, becoming ever more confident with her power game as the season rolls on, once again hit on back-to-back winners, Hope Lodell was everywhere at once, slicin’ ‘n dicin’ as only “The Surgeon” can, and all that was left for Bellevue’s JV to do was decide what snacks they would buy at the concession stand post-match.

Cause, otherwise, they were done.

The Wolf JV volleyball squad, perhaps the scrappiest in all the land. (John Fisken photos)

They don’t go down easy.

Demonstrating a genuine scrappiness, the Coupeville High School JV volleyball squad almost pulled off a rally of epic proportions in the second set of what would eventually become a straight-sets loss Thursday night.

While the Wolves fell 25-15, 26-24, 25-14 to visiting Mount Vernon Christian (dropping their record to 1-2 on the season), they had a stretch of utter brilliance.

Trailing 21-10 in the second set, Coupeville roared back to flatten the Hurricanes 14-3 behind the serving of three players.

Katrina McGranahan, Mackenzi Valko and Jae LeVine suddenly started to click, with McGranahan starting things off with back-to-back aces, and the Wolves caught fire.

Along the way, one Mt. Vernon player smacked the ball off of a teammate’s face (point Coupeville) and Payton Aparicio jumped out of her shoes to drop a picture-perfect tip just out of reach of three MVC players.

While the rally ultimately fell just short, as the Hurricanes pulled out the final two points of the set to escape, it was a sustained run of excellence for a young Wolf squad.

A team jam-packed with freshmen collected some other nice moments as well.

Kameryn St Onge delivered two knockout punch-style spikes, McGranahan and Abby Parker connected on back-to-back big spikes that each ricocheted successfully off the back line and Hope “The Surgeon” Lodell converted a pair of precision aces.

The most awe-inspiring moment may have been lost in the crush of battle.

Late in the final set, at the end of one of the longer rallies of the night, Wolf sophomore Lauren Grove extended her fingers as far as she could, spinning the ball over the net with a flawless tip.

The ball knifed through several defenders, hit the floor and skidded off, leaving one Mt. Vernon player flat-footed, her mouth wide open in awe of Grove’s artistry.

When Payton Aparicio hits a ball, it doesn't come back. (Katrina McGranahan photos)

Payton Aparicio is the early frontrunner in the contest for most spectacular hit of the volleyball season.

Playing in her first high school match Tuesday at South Whidbey, the Coupeville High School freshman lofted the ball high into the rafters, and it never, ever came down.

While she and her teammates waited for the black and white ball to bounce down — teams can play a ball that bounces off the rafters — it never reappeared.

Instead, it rolled along one of the gym beams and then skidded to a stop and sat motionless.

For all eternity.

“Everyone had a little giggle about it and it was there when we left the gym at the end of the night,” said Wolf JV coach Amy King.  “That was the highlight of our match.”

The rest of the night wasn’t as light-hearted for Coupeville’s JV squad, which fell 25-9, 25-13, 25-6 in its first match of the season.

“They were outmatched by a very strong, very aggressive and older South Whidbey team,” King said. “This group has a ton of potential, we have worked on their offense, defense, court movement and all of their skills. All I can do is continue looking for the group who will work together on the court and show what they really can do.

“We had a few really good rallies, but when it came down to it, we didn’t hit like we have in practice or even in the jamboree,” she added. “The court was quiet, feet weren’t moving and it just seemed that we were either extremely nervous or tired, and I’m sure it was not that we were tired.”

Serving was a highlight, with Allison Wenzel and Hope Lodell both launching ace serves, while “Lauren Grove was moving well on the court, as was Brittany Powers, trying to spark our offense.”

They had one last victory lap to make.

Officially capping the 2013-2014 high school athletic year, the Wolf track and field team handed out awards and letters Tuesday night.

We don’t have a list of said letter winners in hand yet (calm down, David, it will happen…) but here are some photos from awards night to tide you over until then.

Meanwhile I’ll be over there, screaming “Someone get CHS track coach Randy King to a computer, stat!! I don’t care if it’s finals week!!!!”
