Gabe Wynn? Apparently he’s so quick all the other players are still looking at where he was, even after he’s long gone.

James Vidoni

You may think you will deny Risen Johnson, but spoiler: you won’t.

Luke Merriman

Fair warning. You ruffle even one of Luke Merriman’s perfectly-coiffed hairs and he’ll drop 30 on you.

The Wolves tasted the air up there, and they liked it.

Doing a lot of their work up above the court Wednesday, the CHS boys’ hoops squads rained defeat down on visiting Orcas Island.

As the varsity pulled out a last-second thriller and the JV turned a close game into a rout with a wild finish, travelin’ photo man John Fisken was on hand to document the happenings.

The photos above are courtesy him.

Fourth quarter warriors.

Playing their best ball over the final eight minutes Wednesday, the Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball squad stormed back to knock off visiting Orcas Island 58-43.

The Wolves used a 22-7 advantage in the fourth to break open a tie ball game and net their first win of the season.

Now 1-3, Coupeville’s young guns were led by Ty Eck, who went off for a team-high 22, including five treys, and Luke Merriman, who dropped in 20.

Gabe Eck added 10, Ariah Bepler banked home four and James Vidoni swished a basket to complete the scoring output.

The Wolves started to run away with the game in the early going, jumping out to a 17-5 lead after one.

Orcas chipped away, though, using 15-12 and 16-7 surges in the middle two quarters to knot things up at 36 entering the final eight minutes of play.

After that it was all Coupeville, all the time.

Gabe Eck hauled down 11 boards, handed out five assists and made off with two steals to help fill up the stat sheet, while his brother had four rebounds and two steals.

Merriman liked the number three, racking up that total in three categories (rebounds, steals and assists).

Andre Avila chipped in with three rebounds and four assists, Vidoni had two rebounds and Bepler and Beauman Davis each corralled a loose carom.

Luke Merriman

Luke Merriman, deep thinker. Or so he’d like us to believe.

The action was heated, the fouls had a little more emphasis than normal and the cameras were clicking.

Wednesday night brought another round of rivalry games to Coupeville, as eternal enemy South Whidbey ventured into the heart of the Island.

As the Wolves and Falcons clashed on the hard-court, travelin’ photo man John Fisken was busy working the sidelines in between sips of Diet Coke.

Some of his eye-poppin’ work is captured above for your light-reading entertainment.

Luke Merriman, doin' work. (John Fisken photos)

Luke Merriman, doin’ work. (John Fisken photos)

Did you hear all the screaming earlier today?

It’s probably because the teen idol of his generation, the mop-topped, shake ‘n bake ‘n break your ankles hoops star, the smoothest criminal in all the land, one Luke Merriman, had a birthday.

Mr. Merriman can dazzle on the basketball court, whipping the ball between his legs, then stepping back and droppin’ treys from somewhere out in the parking lot.

He was born to be a bad, bad man.

Of course, off the court, you will rarely meet a nicer guy.

Through middle school and now high school, Luke has been one of those dudes who glides through life a bit like he’s Matthew McConaughey’s younger brother.

He’s slick, he’s laid back, he can talk all the day long, but, underneath the lady killer moves, there beats the heart of a true gentleman.

Luke is more delicate than you might think (it would be nice if he could stop breaking bones all the time and stay healthy) but he has a heart a lion could only hope to own.

He’s the real deal, on the court and off, and he’ll always be someone who I, and a lot of other people, always root for.

Happy birthday, Luke. May it fly as high as you do.

And yes, I’ve seen that recent photo of you getting dangerously close to dunking, so that’s pretty dang high.

Johnson and Luke Merriman have a fashion-off.

Johnson and Luke Merriman have a fashion-off.

He was like a bolt of pure energy.

When Risen Johnson took the floor this year — his first as a basketball player at Coupeville High School after transferring to Cow Town — he was a one-man whirlwind.

Dipping and diving through the air, always guaranteed to put a little extra mustard on everything, Risen was worth the price of admission.

If I actually paid to get in, that is…

And let’s take a huge moment to thank the fine folks at CHS who DON’T charge me to cover games. May that continue.

But anyway, back to my first point.

Risen, who celebrates a birthday today, was pure fun to watch.

Sure, he flew wild sometimes, but that was part of the thrill.

He’s a young player, still fairly new to the sport, and he’s fine-tuning his skill set.

What he has is undeniable speed and hops and a penchant for throwing up highlight reel-worthy plays from time to time.

Every time Risen touched the ball you never quite knew what was coming next.

Like I said, fun.

So let’s take a moment to thank him for the thrills, wish him a great birthday and look forward to all the new moves he’s probably busy working on right now.

We are all witnesses, Risen. Bring it on.
