The Wolves celebrate, something they did often this season.

The Wolves celebrate, something they did often this season.

Call ’em the mini champs.

Completing a flawless run through 1A Olympic League play, the Coupeville High School JV volleyball squad capped a stellar season with one final win Monday night.

Bouncing host Klahowya 25-13 (the call of the ferry prevented any more action), the Wolves won their fourth straight and fifth in their final six matches.

Coupeville’s young guns finished 7-4 (most wins by any CHS sports program this fall) and a perfect 4-0 in league action.

Playing second Monday, the Wolves had to wait for an epic varsity match to unspool before they hit the court. Once they did, they made quick work of the Eagles.

“The JV had their foot on the gas the entire game, barely giving Klahowya time to breathe,” said Coupeville coach Heidi Wyman.

The Wolves combined to serve at a 93% rate, missing just two serves, while delivering four service aces and seven kills.

“I can’t give you a player of the game because each and every player on this team deserves that spotlight,” Wyman said.

Over the course of the season Coupeville got strong work from all 10 players on its roster (sophomores Kayla Rose, Allison Wenzel, Abby Parker, Kenzi LaRue, Kameryn St Onge and Maggie Crimmins and freshmen Ashley Menges, Nicole Lester, Sarah Wright and Maddy Hilkey), several of whom should be in contention to move up to varsity next season.

“They improved every match this season,” Wyman said. “More importantly they learned how to play for each other, selflessly working collectively towards their goals.

“I am very, very proud of them and feel honored to have had the chance to serve this team and this school.”

They put the fear of God into ’em.

Playing on the road, minus arguably their most dynamic player, the Coupeville High School spikers pushed a private school powerhouse to the brink Tuesday night.

While the Wolves eventually fell 25-22, 25-20, 25-22 to host Bellevue Christian, they went down landing hay-makers from all sides, sparked by a freshman adding another chapter to her family’s storied athletic history.

With starting libero Valen Trujillo unavailable, ninth grader Maddy Hilkey stepped into the role and was en fuego, reviving memories of mom Emrie McCauslin, a former Wolf legend in several sports.

Maddy did an amazing job of stepping up,” said jubilant CHS coach Breanne Smedley.

And it wasn’t just the young phenom who delighted her coach on this night.

Bouncing back from an agonizing five-set defeat to Chimacum in their previous match, the Wolves showed the loss would inspire them, and not crack their resolve.

“They battled and fought well,” Smedley said. “We had great strings of points, then would let them creep back in.

“Still working on finishing and closing out games under pressure, but the girls were swinging and playing aggressively against a hard-hitting and scrappy team.”

Coupeville came strong at the net, with its big hitters rising to the occasion.

“Our middles were also effective tonight,” Smedley said. “Both Katrina (McGranahan) and McKenzie (Bailey) did a great job swinging for corners and playing aggressively at the net.”

The Wolves best run came in the third set, when Sydney Autio ripped off nine straight points at the service stripe, sending her team to an 11-2 lead.

Autio finished with 16 service points while also putting up 14 assists from the setter position, while Bailey (six kills) and McGranahan (three aces, six kills) pounded away.

Hard-hitting sophomore sensation Payton Aparicio was on target as well, collecting five kills.

Coupeville returns home Thursday for a non-conference match against 1A Olympic League foe Port Townsend (yeah, it’s confusing), then kicks off the “real” six-match league schedule Tuesday, Oct. 13.

Having proved their resiliency, the scrappy Wolves, who are expected to have Trujillo back in the lineup Thursday, want to prove their 1-6 record is deceptive.

“The girls are motivated and excited to bring this intensity against Port Townsend on Thursday!,” Smedley said.

Heidi Wyman’s talented band of young guns.

Speed kills.

Playing quickly and efficiently, the Coupeville High School JV volleyball squad whipped visiting Orcas Island so fast Friday night they still had time to be fans.

Playing in one gym while the Wolf varsity played in another, the young guns dismantled the Vikings 25-8, 25-16, 25-22, then jumped across the hall to scream and holler.

“They finished Orcas quick enough to cheer on the varsity!,” said Wolf JV coach Heidi Wyman. “It’s great to be part of a team and a town that supports each other so well.

“These young ladies are loud on the bench, pick each other up when they get down, and celebrate each other’s successes selflessly,” she added. “It’s scary when you get that kind of chemistry. It’s gonna be an awesome season!”

The win, coming after a 10-day layoff, was the second straight for the JV squad, lifting them to 2-2 on the still-young season.

They did it with a mix of precision serving (25 aces) and big hitting (15 kills).

“Offensively aggressive all night!,” said a proud coach.

Freshman phenom Maddy Hilkey captured player of the game honors with 14 serving aces and four kills.

“She passes any ball that comes her way with grace and accuracy,” Wyman said.

Also soaring high were the deadly duo of Kameryn St Onge, who rattled home six kills, and Nicole Lester, who led the Wolves with an 89% success rate at the service stripe.

Kameryn is deadly whenever she gets a chance to attack the ball,” Wyman said. “Having a left-handed setter that can sky the way she does is just awesome to watch.

Nicole is so great,” she added. “When the team needs someone to put a serve in, she finds a way to make it happen.”

Leaps and bounds.

Showing improvement every day, a very young Coupeville High School volleyball squad continues to rise, and Saturday was another triumph.

Playing at the 16-team South Whidbey Invitational, the Wolves claimed second in their bracket.

Coupeville swept two sets from Orcas Island, a school they will face Sept. 25 at home, and split sets with Port Angeles.

The small-school Wolves also fared well against the bigger teams in the tourney, which included 2A and 3A schools.

“They did great!,” said CHS coach Breanne Smedley. “The team is really starting to come together and realizing their potential on the court.

“We are still learning from the ups and downs associated with being a young team,” she added. “Our goal has been to increase our mental toughness to play “our game” from start to finish.”

Along with the normal varsity lineup, three JV players got the call-up to pad the roster and all made an impression on their coach.

“Our freshman floaters — Maddy Hilkey, Ashley  Menges and Sarah Wright — did an amazing job of stepping in when we needed them,” Smedley said.

“Each time we play, I can tell that all the girls have a desire to keep improving and pushing their limits, which makes it extremely fun and rewarding to coach!,” she added. “Overall, a great day!!”

Maddy Hilkey

No volleyball can escape Maddy Hilkey’s reach.

“I am very proud of how this team is working together, supporting each other and progressing!”

Two matches into her new role as Coupeville High School JV volleyball coach, Heidi Wyman is all aglow with the possibilities.

“They are a fantastic group of girls with a ton of heart and a blast to coach!,” she said after riding the ferry back from Friday Harbor Thursday night.

Playing second on the night, the JV squad waged an epic war with their hosts, dropping the first two sets by a sliver at 25-19 and 32-30, before roaring back to shred the Wolverines 25-7 in the final set of the evening.

“They did amazing!,” said Wyman, who hailed Kameryn St Onge for a “breakout performance” in which she “dominated both at the net and serving.”

St Onge ripped off six straight successful serves during the third set, including two aces.

Two of her teammates earned praise, as well, with Sarah Wright “a beast behind the service line,” en route to launching nine service aces in one set and Maddy Hilkey logging the first “perfect 3.0” passing set of the season for the JV.
