Slap hitter?

She’ll slap it over the fence, thanks.

Former CHS softball star Madeline Roberts continued her strong freshman season at Shoreline Community College, crushing a ball for a home run this weekend.

And it wasn’t an inside-the-park job, but a moon shot over the center field wall.

“Definitely over the fence!,” said a jubilant Roberts.

The speedy lead-off hitter, who also played basketball in the winter for the Dolphins, is currently among the team leaders in most offensive categories.

Her eight RBI puts her in a tie for second on the squad, while her five stolen bases also lands her at #2 on the stat sheet.

Roberts is first on the team in being hit by pitches (twice), third in runs (eight) and has collected 10 hits and six walks so far this year.

Hammer in her natural habitat.

Get ready Everett. The thunder is coming to town.

Coupeville High School senior softball slugger Hailey Hammer will be packing up her booming bat after graduation and taking her high-powered offensive game to the next level.

She has signed a letter of intent to play at Everett Community College next year, becoming the second Wolf in as many years to net a college softball scholarship.

Hammer follows in the footsteps of former teammate Madeline Roberts, who is currently a freshman at Shoreline Community College, one of Everett’s rivals in the Northwest Athletic Conference.

By choosing Everett, Hammer is also following in the footsteps of older brother Hunter Hammer, who was a successful track thrower and basketball player at the school.

For Hailey, the chance to become a Trojan was an easy one.

“It has been one of my tops since the beginning,” she said. “It’s close to home, runs in the family, with Hunter going we’ve made several trips over there and I loved the staff and coaches there.

“It was a great experience trying out for the team and I was ecstatic when they offered me a spot with a scholarship.”

Before she goes, though, she has one last high school season to play.

The Wolves are scheduled to kick off their softball season Monday against Sultan (4 PM), though that might be dicey with all the rain that fell Sunday.

But, eventually, the season will kick off and it will be Hammer’s 12th as a varsity player at CHS.

She has been the rare player to be a varsity fixture in three sports (volleyball, basketball, softball) for all four years of high school.

Madeline Roberts is days away from officially becoming a two-sport college athlete.

The Shoreline Community College freshman, who’s about to wrap up an unexpected basketball season (her first in four years) kicks off her main sport in less than a week.

Roberts is on scholarship as a softball player and she and her Dolphin teammates open play March 4.

The school posted the top photo, showcasing this year’s team, on its Facebook page this afternoon, and we’re passing it on to Wolf Nation.

Mad Dog fever continues to rage across the land.

College is all about exploring new things.

Former Wolf superstar Madeline Roberts is proving that daily, as the softball sensation continues to play out an unexpected sports diversion.

After playing high school hoops only as a freshman, she wasn’t the first person you’d expect to pick back up the sport.

And yet here she is, almost 20 games into her freshman basketball season at Shoreline Community College.

Roving photo man John Fisken was down Mount Vernon way Wednesday and caught Roberts in action against Skagit Valley College to prove it was fact and not just a rumor.

Might not be her usual sport, but one thing remains true — Mad Dog will kick your fanny in whatever sport she chooses to play.

Apparently the three-year break didn’t hurt her all that badly.

Despite not playing basketball competitively since her freshman year in high school, former Wolf Madeline Roberts continues to put up numbers at Shoreline Community College.

Roberts, who is a freshman scholarship softball player for the Dolphins, is one of five players to have seen floor time in all of the school’s 13 womens’ hoops games this season.

She has amassed 22 points, 23 rebounds, 12 steals, two assists and a blocked shot (Roberts may be listed at five-foot-four, but it’s a feisty, rise-up-and-deny-the-shooter five-foot four).

And, if nothing else, all that basketball action keeps her in shape for her true sport.
