Coupeville’s Wonder Twins turn 17 tomorrow.

Marisa and Lucas Etzell will celebrate their birthdays in different countries, but the bond between the siblings never fades.

Both strong athletes — Marisa is a standout CHS soccer player and state meet veteran as a track runner, while Lucas is a Gold Medal-winning basketball player in the Special Olympics — they join older brother Ben and younger brother Nick to form a fearsome foursome.

They each have their own style.

Marisa is quiet but strong, able to hold her own with three brothers, while Lucas can talk to anyone, anytime and works his way through a crowd like a politician on the campaign trail, glad-handing everyone in sight.

They are both making an impact on the world, and it begins with their bond with each other.

May they celebrate many more birthdays together.

OK, calm down, there are still two months to go, but … right now, this moment … Makana Stone would be a state champion.

The Coupeville High School sophomore has run the fastest 400 time of any girl in 1A, 2B or 1B this season, clocking in at 61.46 at the Seattle Academy Relays Mar. 22.

Three meets into the season, Stone appears four times on the 1A girls Top 10 lists, with top-five times in the 200, 400 and as a member of the 4 x 100 and 4 x 200 relay teams, where she’s joined by Marisa Etzell, Sylvia Hurlburt and Lauren Grove.

None of those four Wolves are seniors, either, with Etzell the oldest as a mere junior. Continued good times should be ahead.

The CHS boys don’t have any athletes in the Top 10 currently, but they do have a fair amount making the list if you take one step down and look at the top performers in District 1.

Freshman Lauren Grove ran a leg on two winning relay teams Thursday.

Sylvia Hurlburt is hopping for joy over her team’s performance.

She’s not slowing down any time soon.

Coupeville High School sophomore Makana Stone is starting off her second track season the same way she did her first one — kickin’ butt and takin’ names.

Thursday, she and her teammates were in Sultan for a four-team meet and the swift one captured victories in all four of her events.

She cruised to first in the 100 and 200, then teamed with junior Marisa Etzell, fellow sophomore Sylvia Hurlburt and freshman Lauren Grove to capture both the 4 x 100 and 4 x 200 relay races.

On the boys side of the battle, Wolf senior Nick Streubel out-flung teammate Dalton Martin to claim the discus title, the only event win for Coupeville.

With a thin roster, the 1A Wolves finished fourth in both team competitions, behind 2A schools Lakewood, Archbishop Thomas Murphy and Sultan.

Wolf track stars exiled!!

The most dynamic athlete at Coupeville High School will NOT perform in front of home fans this spring.

Sophomore sprinter and relay ace Makana Stone, who smashed school records, placed at state and won her first 30+ races as a freshman, will spend the spring on the road.

She and fellow state meet veterans like Sylvia Hurlburt and Marisa Etzell will travel to every one of their 2014 track meets, as CHS, for the first time in memory, will not host a home meet.

The only time the Wolves will perform on Whidbey Island, in fact, is Thursday, March 20 when they kick off the season with an appearance at the Oak Harbor Jamboree (3:30 PM start).

After that, there’s trips to Sultan, Cedarcrest (twice) and Granite Falls, among other destinations, but no home meets and no trips to South Whidbey.

No reason has been given for the lack of a home meet.

Coupeville Middle School will host a home meet April 30, when King’s, Langley and Lopez Island will come to town.

But the lack of a home meet for the high school squad could derail one of the school’s traditions.

Does that mean that Senior Night for thrower Nick Streubel and others will take place on a bouncing school bus somewhere on the back roads of America as Coupeville completes its never-ending road trip?

Probably.

Live from the (science) Olympiad!!

Science!

It’s good to be Zane Bundy. “All your medals belong to me!!”

They came, they saw, they did science … in a really sporty kind of way.

Coupeville High School’s Science Olympiad team competed Saturday in the NW Region C Invitational Tournament at Raisbeck Aviation High School in Tukwila, bringing home several medals for accomplishing scientific things that make my brain hurt when I think about them.

So, basically, while I have no idea what they did, or how they did what they did (I took as few science classes as possible in my school days…), I do know this — CHS students are smart. And successful.
