Can’t hold him down.

Former Wolf football star Mitch Pelroy ripped off big return yardage Saturday, doing his part to help spark the Montana Western gridiron squad to its first victory in four weeks.

The 50-30 savaging of visiting Montana State-Northern in NAIA action snapped a three-game skid and improved the Bulldogs to 2-3. They now have a bye week before returning to action Oct. 4 against Carroll College.

Pelroy was his team’s primary return man Saturday, taking back four kickoffs for 97 yards, with his longest run stretching 28 yards.

He also hauled in Montana State’s lone punt, picking up 10 yards before being taken down. He was a hit on defense as well, recording a tackle from his defensive back position.

Bulldog quarterback Tyler Hulse ran for three touchdowns and threw for two more as Montana Western strolled up and down the field all day.

Mitch Pelroy is starting to pile up some yardage.

The former Coupeville High School football star ripped off a 41-yard kickoff return and a 38-yard punt return Saturday for Montana Western, but it wasn’t enough to keep the Bulldogs from taking a close loss, their third in a row.

Montana Western fell 31-28 to host College of Idaho, which counts former CHS lineman Anthony Maggio among its players.

The Coyotes are 2-0 after restarting a once-vaunted program that had been idle since 1977.

Pelroy leads his squad in both kickoff returns (he’s averaging 29.2 yards a return) and punt returns (15.3) and is third on the team in all-purpose yards with 221.

He has also recorded 10 tackles from his defensive back position.

Now 1-3 on the season, Montana Western returns to action Saturday, Sept. 20 when it hosts Montana State-Northern for Homecoming.

The Bulldogs will get a rematch with College of Idaho at home Nov. 1.

Mitch Pelroy

Second game, not as great as the first one.

After opening with a big win, the Montana Western football squad headed to Cheney Saturday with high hopes. Then those hopes got deflated.

Playing against a NCAA Division 1 school in host Eastern Washington, the NAIA Bulldogs got pounded, falling 41-9 to even their record at 1-1 on the young season.

One bright spot for Montana Western was the continued strong play of former Coupeville High School star Mitch Pelroy, who collected three tackles from his defensive back position.

The Bulldog sophomore now has seven tackles (five solo, two assists), while also topping his squad by averaging 23.5 yards per kickoff return (2 for 47 yards).

The trip to Cheney was the only time this season Pelroy and his teammates will play in Washington state.

Eastern Washington (2-0), which faces the University of Washington next Saturday, was not very welcoming, however.

Eagle quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. led the rout, completing 27 of 30 passes for 360 yards and five touchdowns.

Bragging rights for the state of Montana were on the line, and Mitch Pelroy did his part for the cause.

The former Coupeville High School football star, now a sophomore defensive back at Montana Western University, had a hand in four tackles Aug. 23 as his Bulldogs thumped rival Montana Tech 38-6 in their season opener.

Pelroy recorded two solo tackles and assisted on two others as Montana Western dropped the defensive boom on the Orediggers.

Senior quarterback Tyler Hulse threw for three touchdowns and ran for another as the NAIA school opened Frontier League play with a huge win.

The Bulldogs will have to take it up several notches this week, when they travel to Cheney to play a non-conference game Saturday, Aug. 30 against NCAA Division 1 school Eastern Washington.

It will be the only time Pelroy and his teammates play in Washington state this year.

Eastern blasted Sam Houston State 56-35 in its opener, but could be primed for an upset if they get caught looking ahead to the game after Montana Western’s visit.

That’s a Sept. 6 match-up with the University of Washington in Seattle.

Lathom Kelley wants to erase Mitch Pelroy from the record books, and Pelroy couldn’t be happier.

Now playing football at Montana Western, Pelroy was a three-sport stud during his days at Coupeville High School, playing football, basketball and track and his name is still up on the big board in the CHS gym for his running exploits.

His time of 22.84 stands as the school record in the 200.

Now Kelley, a speedy sophomore who has taken great leaps in the weight room in off-season workouts, is coming hard for Pelroy’s status as top dog in the sprints.

He ran a 23.85 in the season-opening Whidbey Island Jamboree Thursday (his best as a freshman was 24.93), finishing just off of meet winner Dejon Devroe of host Oak Harbor.

Not bad for a guy from the smallest 1A school in the state going head-to-head with a dude from a bigger 3A school.

Now Kelley wants more.

“Sorry Mitch, but my goal is to take your name off that board. With only good intentions though,” Kelley said.

Pelroy, a proud alumni, welcomed the spirit of his successor.

“Oh, I know you will take it off man,” Pelroy said. “I hope you get it soon!”

The exchange warmed the heart of CHS football/basketball coach Dustin Van Velkinburgh, a guy who can still get from one place to another pretty quickly himself.

“I love it when alumni encourage current athletes. Sign that things are changing around here,” Van Velkinburgh said. “Keep up the amazing work Mitch and Lathom. I couldn’t be more proud of the both of you.”
