Tennis it is.

Joey Lippo was a three-sport star during his days at Coupeville High School, anchoring Wolf teams in tennis, basketball and baseball.

He was also the rare male athlete who could do a mean dance as well, often joining twin sister Skyy in her world of ballet, when he performed in productions of The Nutcracker.

But now Lippo, a 2018 CHS grad, will devote himself solely to the racket arts, after agreeing to play tennis for Midway University in Kentucky.

The liberal arts school competes athletically in the River States Conference, and is part of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.

Most NAIA schools offer athletic scholarships, and Midway has pledged to pick up a substantial portion of Lippo’s college costs, making his parents hearts sing with great joy.

In addition to playing tennis, Lippo will study environmental science. School begins Jan. 7, with tennis starting in Feb.

He’s joining an Eagles program which is still in its infancy, as Midway was an all-girls school until just recently.

Founded in 1847, the school was originally known as the Kentucky Female Orphan School and admitted its first male undergraduates in time for the fall 2017 semester.

Midway University sits smack-dab on a 200-acre working farm in the Bluegrass region of Kentucky, and the oldest building on campus, Pinkerton Hall, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

While the school has been around for a long time, Lippo is one of the pioneers for male sports at the institution.

The men’s tennis program is in just its second season, with coach Joe Reyes, a highly-accomplished former college player, quickly building a strong roster.

The Eagles currently lay claim to players from Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama and Texas, plus four foreign netters, one from Spain and three from Columbia.

And now you can add Washington state to the list.

“The tennis coach found me somehow and told me to come visit the school,” Lippo said. “I got to play with the team and I loved that environment and everyone was so welcoming.

“It’s a small school and reminds me a lot of Coupeville.”

Still can’t catch Mitch Pelroy.

The former Coupeville High School football sensation kicked off a new season of college ball Saturday the same way he ended the last one — two or three steps ahead of his would-be tacklers.

Pelroy, now a junior at Montana Western, sparkled on both sides of the ball as the Bulldogs decimated host Rocky Mountain 49-6.

It was the fifth straight win for Pelroy and Co., who closed out 2014 with a four-game winning streak.

The former Wolf handled both of Montana Western’s kickoff returns, rolling up 44 yards in the return game, while also chipping in with a tackle and two assists from his defensive back position.

The ‘Dog defense was stellar all afternoon, forcing eight turnovers.

A.J. Wilson, in particular, had the kind of afternoon defensive grunts can usually only dream about. He scored three times, bringing back two fumbles and an interception for touchdowns.

Freshman quarterback J.D. Ferris added a pair of touchdown strikes as Montana Western easily captured the Frontier Conference win.

The Bulldogs, and their speedy former Wolf, return to Dillon, Montana for their home opener next Saturday (Sept. 12), when they’ll play host to the College of Idaho.

Mitch Pelroy lit the fuse and the University of Montana Western exploded.

Set up by a 33-yard kickoff return from the speedy Coupeville High School grad, the Bulldogs crushed MSU-Northern 60-15 Saturday in NAIA gridiron action, claiming the school’s first winning record in a decade.

Closing with four straight wins, Montana Western finished the season 6-5 overall, 6-4 in the Frontier Conference. It was the school’s first winning season since 2004.

Sophomore Sam Rutherford keyed the win, rambling for 111 yards and two touchdowns. He snapped the school’s single-season rushing record with 1,061 yards — the first Bulldog to break 1,000 yards.

Montana Western quarterback Tyler Hulse wrapped up a stellar career as a Bulldog by passing for 244 yards and three touchdowns. Hulse capped his final game by rushing for a 15-yard touchdown as well.

Playing as a redshirt sophomore, Pelroy led the Bulldogs in both punt (four returns for 56 yards) and kickoff returns (16-389) and was fifth on the team in all-purpose yardage with 445 yards.

He also recorded 14 solo tackles and four assists while playing in the defensive backfield.

Home, sweet home.

After being bounced two weeks in a row on the road, the Montana Western football team came back to Dillon Saturday and rediscovered its winning touch.

The squad, which includes Coupeville High School grad Mitch Pelroy — who made an impact on both sides of the ball — rallied for two fourth-quarter touchdowns to pull off a 34-28 victory over Eastern Oregon.

Sam Rutherford blasted in from two yards out with just under three minutes to play to cap the comeback, then the Bulldog defense held off a last-ditch Oregon rally.

The win lifted Montana Western, an NAIA school, to 3-5 on the season, 3-4 in the Frontier Conference.

The Bulldogs are now 3-1 at home this season and 0-4 on the road.

They’ll have a chance to avenge their only home loss of the season, a 37-30 double overtime defeat to Rocky Mountain College, next Saturday, Oct. 25, when they travel to Billings.

Two of their final three games are on the road.

Pelroy didn’t have a ton of chances Saturday, but used his time on the field well.

He returned a kickoff 13 yards and recorded a tackle from his position in the defensive backfield.

For the season, the former Wolf star leads the Bulldogs in kickoff (14 for 356 yards) and punt returns (4-56). He has 12 tackles and two assists while playing in all eight of his team’s games.

Maybe they should put the ball in Mitch Pelroy’s hands more often.

When the former Coupeville High School gridiron star got his mitts on the football Saturday, things happened. Exciting things.

When he didn’t, not so much.

Pelroy took back two kickoff returns for big yardage, ripping off runs of 24 and 25 yards, but with the rest of his Montana Western teammates having a stagnant day, the Bulldogs fell 31-6 to host Southern Oregon in NAIA play.

The loss dropped Montana Western to 2-5 on the season.

The Bulldogs, who were out-gained 481 yards to 278 on the day, failed to score until they netted a pair of fourth-quarter field goals from Connor Greth.

While Montana Western is struggling a bit in the win-loss column, Pelroy has been putting up nice numbers.

He has returned 13 kicks for 343 yards and four punts for 56 yards. His 399 all-purpose yards put him third on the Bulldogs stat chart for the season.

Pelroy has also found time to patrol the defensive backfield, recording eleven solo tackles and assisting on two others.

Montana Western will try to break its recent backwards slide when it returns home Saturday, Oct. 18 to face Eastern Oregon.
