If the lights are shining, so is Taygin Jump.

The Coupeville High School grad, now a sophomore at Plattsburgh State, was back in action Friday at the RPI Friday Night Under the Lights Invitational in Troy, New York.

The track and field star accounted for five of her team’s 46 points, claiming 5th in the javelin (out of a field of 22 competitors) and 8th (of 27) in the hammer throw.

Jump set a collegiate PR in the latter event, flinging her implement 127 feet, five inches, while launching the javelin a solid 95-09.

A stellar multi-sport athlete who participated in volleyball and track back in her CHS days, the former Wolf is majoring in Environmental Planning and Management/Geology.

Plattsburgh State athletes will be back in action next weekend with two meets.

The Bobbi Palma Spring Classic in Albany, New York goes down Friday, April 18, while the Middlebury Invitational is the next day in Vermont.

“Ambition plus passion equals success.”

That was the mantra Scott Arnold preached to his fellow graduates as he delivered his Salutatorian speech to the Coupeville High School Class of 2009.

The Wolf grad has continued to live those words, finding great success in multiple fields after his Cow Town days.

Now, the oldest child of Garrett and Sylvia is living and working in the Big Apple, making waves as a designer with California Closets New York.

This week, Brett and Courtney’s sibling got a pretty dang snazzy feature in Cottages & Gardens, one of those magazines which exudes class and high living.

Best day yet.

Coupeville grad Taygin Jump nailed PR’s in both her events Saturday at a four-team college track and field meet in Canton, New York.

The former Wolf, now a fab frosh at Plattsburgh State University, earned 2nd place in the women’s weight throw, tossing the implement 37 feet, four inches.

Jump also finished 7th (in a field of 13 competitors) in the shot put, hurling it 27-06 at the St. Lawrence Invitational.

Plattsburgh’s female crew was 2nd in the team standings, edged 146-143 by the hosts.

The Cardinals return to action next Saturday, Feb. 3 at the Fast Trax Invite in Utica, New York.

During her CHS days, Taygin, the oldest of Phil and Christina’s three children, played club and school volleyball, while also competing in track and field.

The long layoff is over.

Coupeville grads Taygin Jump and Logan Martin returned to college track and field action Saturday in different parts of the country.

Jump, a freshman at Plattsburgh State in New York, enjoyed her first meet in six weeks, competing at the Middlebury Winter Classic in Vermont.

While there the former Wolf finished 10th in the weight throw and 24th in the shot put.

Jump tossed her implement 36 feet, five inches in the former, and 25-0.50 in the latter.

With the holidays behind them, the Cardinals get busy again, with eight indoor meets between now and early March.

First up is the St. Lawrence Invitational Jan. 27 in Canton, New York.

Martin, a sophomore at Central Washington University, wasn’t originally planning on competing during the indoor track season.

But then he decided he liked heat and was talked into adding the shot put and weight throw while he waits for hammer season to arrive outdoors.

Kicking off a new season at the Lauren McCluskey Memorial Open in Moscow, Idaho, Martin claimed 16th in the weight throw (43-01) and 20th (38-09) in the shot put while appearing on ESPN+.

Central Washington returns to action Jan. 26-27 at the University of Washington Invitational.

Gabriella Gebhard hits the big time. (Photos courtesy Stephanie Gebhard)

Coupeville took a sizable bite out of the Big Apple.

CHS sophomore Gabriella Gebhard and her English setter, Walker – Set’r Ridge’s Legend in the Making, competed Tuesday at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.

The duo competed for the Junior Showmanship title and landed in the top half of the 89 competitors.

Luke Waters of Indiana, showing a Wire Fox Terrier known as Claypools Make Your Mark, claimed top honors.

Westminster, now in its 147th year, is the premier dog show in America, and you have to earn your ticket to compete.

For Gebhard and her rivals, that meant earning Best Junior Handler status in “a minimum of two competing classes at seven or more AKC dog shows in the previous year.”

Getting limbered up for their big-city debut.

Gebhard, who was making her debut appearance at Westminster, is well on her way to qualifying for a repeat trip in 2024.

In Junior Showmanship, judges evaluate the handler on “how they present their dog and how they enhance their dog’s qualities.”

They need to “be able to demonstrate to the judge knowledge of their breed and appropriate ways to present the dog,” with judges looking at “control of the dog, presentation of the dog, and teamwork between the junior and their dog.”

Gebhard and Walker aim for that perfect angle.

While Gabriella was aiming for the crown, showing strongly in her big-time debut is a huge positive.

“The judge looked at her and Walker until the very end,” mom Stephanie Gebhard said. “Impressive on her first try.”

Congrats to a top-notch doggo.
