From here on out, the games get bigger.

The first portion of the 2022-2023 high school basketball season is in the books, with the arrival of a new year bringing the start of league play.

The Coupeville High School girls return to the floor Wednesday, Jan. 4, hosting Granite Falls in non-league bouts.

Two days later, the Wolf boys join their female counterparts, as CHS hosts Orcas Island in a conference clash.

Home cooking is on the menu as 2023 settles in, with no road games for any Coupeville teams until Jan. 14.

As you mentally prep for the hoops mania ahead, a look at where varsity Wolf teams, and their Northwest 2B/1B League rivals, currently sit:

The race has begun.

Winter weather wiped out nine of 18 games this week, but Northwest 2B/1B League schools did manage to start conference play.

With no contests scheduled for Friday or Saturday — and Coupeville had a completely open calendar planned even before the white stuff hit the ground — we’re jumping slightly ahead to publish this latest update.

Once everyone gets through Christmas, the Wolves travel to Eastern Washington next week, with both the boys and girls set to play games Tuesday and Wednesday at holiday tournaments.

The start of the new year really gets league play rolling, but until then, a look at where NWL teams sit as of Dec. 23:

Northwest League boys basketball:

School League Overall
MV Christian 1-0 6-3
Orcas Island 1-0 6-2

Time to rest up.

Coming off a period of playing three games in four days, Coupeville High School basketball teams are now off for a week-plus.

Both Wolf varsity squads return to action with appearances at Eastern Washington tournaments Dec. 27-28, while JV teams are idle until the first week of the new year.

The down time will give Coupeville players a chance to deal with a few nagging, low-key injuries, while coaches continue to tweak their game plans.

As we wait for the return of live action, a look at where Northwest 2B/1B League schools sit through games of Dec. 17:

Northwest League boys basketball:

School League Overall
Orcas Island 1-0 6-1

A busy week awaits.

Heading towards the holidays, Coupeville High School basketball teams are set to play three times in a four-day period.

The Wolves host Crescent Wednesday in a varsity-only rumble, then split locales a day later.

While Coupeville’s two boys’ squads are home Thursday against Sedro-Woolley, the CHS girls hit the road that night to face the same opponent.

The Wolves then wrap the week with an epic trek to Forks Saturday.

As they prep for next week, a look at where Northwest 2B/1B League schools sit through games of Dec. 10:

And they’re off.

High school basketball teams are back at it, and one week in, 13 of 14 Northwest 2B/1B League schools have played at least one game.

It’s all been non-conference action so far, with NWL girls’ squads piling up seven wins to just three from boys’ teams.

The week ahead brings three varsity contests for Coupeville hoops stars.

The Wolf boys hit the road Tuesday, travelling to Tacoma to battle Concordia Christian Academy.

After that, there’s a Saturday home doubleheader, with Coupeville hosting Sultan for both girls and boys contests.

While the season is just underway, it’s never too early to post win/loss records, so here you go.
