I couldn’t tell you who the players are, but here’s a collection of South Whidbey High School athletes in action. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

Wrong school, wrong colors.

And yet, here we are, a blog called Coupeville Sports featuring a parade of South Whidbey High School photos.

Strange times…

Or the fact I almost always say yes when people give me free pics.

So, in between snapping photos of Coupeville girls soccer and volleyball teams competing at this weekend’s Oak Harbor Jamboree, John Fisken also came away with glossy portraits of Falcon athletes in the same sports.

And with the South Whidbey Record having published just one sports story since mid-May, he rightfully offered said photos up to the only Whidbey media site still covering sports on a regular basis.

Which would be my blog, which has published 267 articles (for real) during that same time frame.

Like what you see and/or want to purchase any photos from Fisken?

Easy-peasy, just pop over to:

They’re a work in progress.

The Coupeville High School volleyball squads opened play Saturday with an appearance at the Oak Harbor Jamboree, and the result was a mixed bag.

The Wolf varsity, missing several players who are going through Covid quarantine procedures, dropped all six sets it played, but picked up valuable experience for younger players who made the jump up to the main team.

Meanwhile, the Coupeville JV was on fire, winning five of six sets.

Varsity:

While the 2B Wolves fell 3-0 to both 3A Oak Harbor and 1A South Whidbey, younger players picked up a chance to jump straight into the fire.

“We played with a very-thin group, but the amount of playing time and experience should really benefit us down the road,” said coach Cory Whitmore.

“I’m proud of each of the girls tonight for various reasons, whether it be for stepping up their leadership roles, adapting to playing next to newer teammates, playing a completely new position and/or playing a full six rotations where they had not previously done so.”

As a team, the Wolves were strong at the service line, something Whitmore has been having his team work on.

“I thought that our serving remained very consistent throughout the day,” he said. “That was a concern of ours during the first week of practices; however, we focused on it leading into the jamboree and it paid off.”

Whitmore praised the performance of freshman Katie Marti, who had to immediately step into a crucial role for the team.

“I do want to give a particular shoutout to Katie,” he said. “Having only recently stepped into a setting position, she learned the complicated rotations for a 5-1, and played all six sets, all six rotations for her very first outing in high school ball.

“This would be a lot to ask of any freshman and I thought she did a wonderful job.”

With Coupeville’s first regular season matches just days away, Whitmore and his spikers will get right back at it in practice.

“As a team, we have plenty to work on when getting back from the long weekend,” he said. “But this group has already shown a natural ability to learn at an accelerated rate, and so I’m looking forward to pushing them forward.

JV:

“It was such a great day for the JV girls!,” said coach Ashley Menges.

“They definitely make my job easy. They made a lot of adjustments throughout the day only having seven girls,” she added. “It was a lot of playing time and very good experience for them to start the season!

“Very excited for what’s to come for these girls!”

A new season dawns.

Playing hurry-up, then wait, the Coupeville High School girls soccer team kicked off the fall with an appearance Saturday at the Oak Harbor Jamboree.

Now, after playing two mini-games, the Wolves head back to practice, with their first regular-season game not until Sept. 16.

That match-up will be a home contest against Northwest 2B/1B League rival La Conner and will signal the real beginning of a 13-game season.

Saturday, Coupeville had a chance to face two opponents from larger schools, falling to 3A Oak Harbor and drawing with 1A Meridian.

“We started the first game with some first-game jitters, and a bit of a sleepy approach,” CHS coach Kyle Nelson said. “But we woke up for the second game.

“Really just a great opportunity to get out and play some soccer against some tough opponents in the early season.”

Jumpin’ jamborees, the season has begun.

Coupeville High School volleyball hit the court Saturday at the Oak Harbor jamboree, with the Wolf varsity and JV squads seeing action against the host Wildcats and Cascade.

As the action unfolded, on the court and off, local paparazzi John Fisken clicked away, blowing the dust off his cameras as he also got ready for a new school year.

Other than a tweaked thumb or two, it went very, very nicely.

Making their season debut, the Coupeville High School varsity and JV volleyball squads hit the courts Saturday for a jamboree in Oak Harbor.

The event gave the Wolves a chance to play against live competition and get a measure of where they are as they head into their first match Tuesday at South Whidbey.

“It was a good experience before we go into the season,” said senior Hailey Hammer. “We had some good plays and some not good plays.

“We have room for improvement,” she added. “We played Darrington twice and we play them during the season; we can take them. I think this season will be good.”

Fellow senior Kacie Kiel experienced some pain during the jamboree, jamming her thumb, but lived to walk away and tell the tale.

She was more concerned with how her team did than in complaining about her injury, anyway.

“It was okay, we did really well for our first games!,” Kiel said. “I got hurt a little so it messed me up but it was a great learning experiment.

“I sprained my thumb,” she added. “(Assistant) coach (Amy) King said I hyper-extended it and I kept playing the next game. It’s just swollen.”

With a huge chunk of her varsity roster playing at that level for the first time Saturday, CHS coach Breanne Smedley came away pleased with her player’s growth.

“The jamboree was a great opportunity to get a jersey on and play in a match-like situation before the season starts,” Smedley said. “We were able to work out some kinks and get used to playing together.”

“I am very proud of their first showing,” she added. “Our focus this week in practice was serving, passing, and serve receive rotations. We did all of these things very well. Overall, I think this is a great starting point for us to improve on.”

CHS travels to Langley Tuesday for a non-conference match with the Falcons (JV 5:15/varsity 7:00), before making its home debut Thursday against Friday Harbor (3:30/5:00).
