Defense roars to life, JV boys snag win

They’re our best hope.

Night in and night out this winter, the JV boys’ basketball squad has been the most-successful hoops team at Coupeville High School.

That proved true once again Friday, as the Wolves used an impressive defensive stand in the second half to overcome a slow start and grab a 35-28 win over visiting Orcas Island.

With the victory, the CHS young guns have won five of their last six and get to 6-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 7-6 overall.

That puts them as the only one of Coupeville’s four high school basketball teams to currently be posting a winning record.

With three games left on the schedule, the Wolves also get a chance for revenge, as they travel to Mount Vernon Christian Tuesday to face the only league team to topple them so far.

Friday’s rumble did not start all that positively for Coupeville, as Orcas Island jumped out to a 14-4 lead by the first break.

After that, however, the Wolves begin to find their rhythm.

Four different CHS players hit a bucket during an 8-8 stalemate in the second quarter, before Coupeville used an 8-6 mini-run in the third to cut the deficit back to 28-20.

The fourth quarter? Time to get savage.

With Jayden McManus running wild, pouring in 11 of his team-high 15 points in the final frame, the Wolves pulled a 15-0 shutout across the game’s final eight minutes to snag the victory.

Six CHS players scored, with Khanor Jump (6), Nathan Coxsey (4), Josh Stockdale (4), Liam Lawson (4), and Chris Zenz (2) providing plenty of support for McManus.

Brian Thompson, Ayden Warren, and Trent Thule rounded out the rotation for the Wolves.

Lucero lights up the scoreboard

Ava Lucero was feelin’ it.

The Coupeville High School hoops hotshot accounted for all but one of her team’s points Friday night but a well-balanced Orcas Island squad proved to be too much to overcome for the Wolf JV girls.

Lucero banked in a game-high 18 points, hitting a pair of three-balls and tickling the twines on six of eight free throws, but the visiting Vikings had four players score eight or more as they captured a 45-19 victory.

The loss, coming in the first game for Coupeville’s JV since Jan. 12, drops the Wolf young guns to 0-5 in Northwest 2B/1B League action, 2-8 overall.

Alita Blouin’s squad had sat for a bit as neither Darrington nor Concrete — the last two CHS foes — have a JV team this season.

Orcas, which has been playing on a more consistent basis, jumped out to a 17-6 lead after one quarter of play Friday, then stretched the margin to 31-11 by the half and 41-14 through three frames.

Coupeville’s other point came courtesy 8th grader Anna Powers, who dropped in a free throw.

Cami Van Dyke, Emma Cushman, Zayne Roos, Olivia Hall, Taylor Marrs, Allie Powers, Finley Helm, Elizabeth Marshall, and Willow-Leedy Bonifas all saw floor time, bringing a fiery intensity to their defensive work.

The Wolves hit the road for two of their final three games this season, traveling to Mount Vernon Christian this coming Tuesday before hosting their home finale Friday, Jan. 30 against La Conner.

The final JV clash, set for Feb. 6, is set to go down on Friday Harbor.

Gyms rumble back to life

Everything revs back up to 100% after this.

With the holidays in the rearview mirror, Coupeville High School basketball teams head into the thick of league play and also return to play on their home court for the first time in three weeks.

There are two sets of games on the schedule for the week ahead, with the Wolves hosting Friday Harbor Tuesday, followed by a Friday road trip over to La Conner.

As the 2026 portion of the 2025-26 season powers up, here’s a look at where things sit through Jan. 4:

Cold start derails upset bid

A strong finish. Balanced scoring. Better than average free throw shooting.

There were a lot of positives Friday afternoon for the Coupeville High School varsity boys’ basketball team as it played its first road game of the year.

Unfortunately for the Wolves, there was just one negative — a cold start — and it proved to be too much to overcome in a 63-56 loss on Orcas Island.

With the defeat to the undefeated (3-0) Vikings, the Wolves slip to 0-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 1-4 overall, with a home game against Mount Vernon Christian set for Tuesday.

Friday’s rumble featured the varsity boys playing first, and whether it was the long ferry ride or something else, Coupeville wasn’t clicking at first, falling behind 18-4 through one quarter of play.

Orcas sank four of its five three-balls in the opening frame, with Viking gunner Joe Stevens nailing three as he singed the nets for 13 of his team-high 19 points to set the early pace.

After that, however, the Wolves found their rhythm, outscoring their hosts 52-45 the rest of the way.

Coupeville cut the deficit down to 31-22 at the half, saw it get nudged back out to 45-34 after three quarters, then poured in 22 points across the game’s final eight minutes.

CHS didn’t get to the free throw line as often as Orcas did, but shot with much more consistency once there, sinking 17-22 attempts while the Vikings clanked their way to a 14-29 performance.

Brad Sherman’s squad also had the kind of balanced scoring any coach likes to see, with three different players landing in double figures.

Davin Houston, who had 11 varsity points to his credit coming into the contest, went off for a game-high 19, scoring in every frame and doing it in a variety of ways.

The Wolf junior knocked down a pair of three-balls, as did senior Chase Anderson, who had 13 points, while Camden Glover banged home 16 while controlling the paint.

Malachi Somes (4), Riley Lawless (2), and Aiden O’Neill (2) also tallied points, with Liam Blas, Carson Grove, and Easton Green seeing floor time.

With his 13 points, Anderson gets to 676 and moves from #26 to #24 on the CHS boys career scoring chart, passing ’70s legend Foster Faris (668) and ’90s big man Virgil Roehl (674).

JV boys romp to big win

One team took care of business.

Making the first road trip of the season Friday, the Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball team led from start to finish, polishing off host Orcas Island 45-24 in the league opener for both teams.

The victory lifts the Wolves to 1-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League action, 2-3 overall, with a Tuesday home tilt against always-tough Mount Vernon Christian coming up quickly.

Squaring off with the Vikings, Coupeville claimed the advantage in every quarter.

Up 10-5 at the first break, with Josh Stockdale having poured in eight points fueled by a pair of three-balls, CHS got brutal on defense in the second quarter, holding Orcas to just two points.

That staked the Wolves to a 17-7 lead at the break, which soon blossomed into a 31-14 margin by the time the third quarter had come to a close.

Stockdale finished with 11 points, while running mate Carson Grove led all scorers with a season-high 17.

Toss in nine points from Jayden McManus, four from Liam Lawson, and a bucket apiece for Trent Thule and Nathan Coxsey, and the scoring came from all directions.

Khanor Jump, Brian Thompson, Ayden Warren, Christopher Zenz, and Jaden Flores Garcia also saw floor time for the triumphant Wolves.
