Sports are a new opportunity.
Having made the jump from Pensacola, Florida to Coupeville with her family, new Wolf sophomore Peytin Vondrak is making new friends and finding her niche in a new town with a little help from volleyball.
While she’s new to the sport, she jumped right in and was an enthusiastic presence when on the floor in the JV squad’s straight-sets win over Mount Vernon Christian Tuesday on opening night.
“I’ve never actually played volleyball,” Vondrak said. “I just started I guess and I started because I wanted to meet new people.
“I’ve always been interested in playing it even though I’m not all that good.”
In her short time at CHS, Vondrak has taken quickly to volleyball and her new teammates.
“I enjoy being able to hit the ball,” she said. “I also enjoy being on the team with such amazing girls. They’re all so nice and friendly.”
Vondrak is obviously a work in progress on the court, but she’s been pleasantly surprised to see growth in herself already.
Which just encourages her to keep working hard.
“I guess I would have to say hitting and blocking (are my strengths),” she said. “I really need to work on a lot of things, especially serving.
“My arms are really weak so I always hit the ball into the net,” Vondrak added. “I just need to focus on becoming a stronger and better player.”
Away from the volleyball court, she “loves shopping, watching movies and hanging out with friends” and enjoys her math and art classes.
While not a fan of country music, she’ll listen to just about anything else, and hails the Amanda Bynes soccer rom com “She’s the Man” as a personal favorite.
Vondrak, who also plans to play softball in the spring (“I’ve never played, so that will be interesting…”) wants to continue to improve her volleyball skills, while always staying focused on her academic performance.
“My goals would be becoming a better team player and getting closer to the girls,” she said. “Goals for my high school career would be to pass my classes!!”
Her family (younger sister Madelyn has turned out for middle school volleyball) is a big part of her life, a tight-knit bunch she can always look to for help and guidance.
“Definitely my dad and older sister (help me),” Vondrak said. “They always give good advice and point me to the right direction.
“But my whole family has also shaped me into the person I am.”
