Coupeville’s restaurant business is taking a hit.

Gordon’s Fusion Cuisine, which has operated on NW Coveland Street in the building formerly occupied by Christopher’s on Whidbey, is closing as of Sunday, Jan. 26.

The restaurant released the following statement:

Dear Community,

It is with a heavy heart that we share the news of Gordon’s Fusion Cuisine’s permanent closure, effective Sunday, January 26.

This decision was not made lightly and comes after exhausting every possible effort to continue serving you.

First and foremost, we want to express our deepest gratitude to each and every one of you who have walked through our doors, whether as a loyal customer of Gordon’s Fusion or from our days at Blueberry Hill.

You have been the heart of everything we do, and it has been an absolute pleasure to serve this wonderful community through both bustling times and quieter moments.

Over the years, we have had the privilege of creating meaningful connections with so many of you. Whether it was a quick hello or a heartfelt conversation, these moments have been a constant reminder of why we do what we do.

Our goal has always been to provide a place where the island could gather to enjoy good food in a warm and welcoming environment, and we hope we have succeeded in that mission.

Unfortunately, despite our best efforts to navigate the increasing challenges of running a small business, we have reached a point where it is no longer sustainable to continue operating.

The financial pressures of these times have taken their toll, and in fairness to our amazing staff, we must face this reality with honesty and integrity.

To our loyal customers, thank you for your unwavering support and for allowing us to be a part of your lives.

To our dedicated staff, thank you for your hard work, passion, and commitment—you have been the backbone of everything we’ve accomplished.

While this chapter is coming to an end, the memories we’ve created together will live on in our hearts.

We are truly humbled by the love and support we’ve received from this incredible community over the years.

Thank you for everything.

Gordon’s Fusion Staff

A Coupeville foodie institution is no more.

Ciao, which has served up Italian treats for 13 years on North Main Street, closed for good Saturday.

It occupied the building which formerly housed The County Deli.

Ciao owner Mark Laska released the following statement on Facebook Monday:

Thirteen years ago, we said Ciao, opened our doors, and were named Best New Business.

We welcomed an incredible community to dine and shine. We have celebrated you as you have celebrated us!

From birthdays, weddings, retirements, graduations, wakes, car shows, re-enlistment ceremonies, “Irish” funerals, Tango Tuesdays, and Carnavale to movie nights, wine-pairing dinners, proms, date nights, class reunions, First Thursdays, and magical music, we’ve done it all — together!

We have created so much beauty together and will cherish those glorious moments of togetherness.

On April 13th (our thirteenth anniversary), we said Ciao again.

But this time, it is goodbye with a hearty helping of grazie!

One of Whidbey Island’s most well-known restaurants will permanently close before the end of the month.

Chef Gordon Stewart is shuttering Gordon’s on Blueberry Hill Oct. 22, but will continue to operate Gordon’s Fusion Cuisine in Coupeville.

Quick! Someone save the chocolate mousse recipe!!

The Coupeville restaurant scene is about to witness a huge transition, as Christopher’s on Whidbey is changing ownership for the first time in nearly two decades.

Head chef/owner Andreas Wurzrainer released the following statement Tuesday night:

It is with mixed emotions, that we announce that after nearly 18 years, Lisa and I have decided to hand the Christopher’s apron over to new owners.

As many of you know, I have been offered a position as the Director of Food Services for the Coupeville School District to head up their new Connected Food Program, which will focus on scratch-made, locally-sourced (when possible), and high-quality food for the students in our school district.

I feel honored to be a part of these exciting changes!

This new opportunity to make a substantial difference in the health and well-being of Coupeville’s children deserves my full attention.

After serious consideration, we realized that this new position, coupled with the daily responsibilities of running a busy restaurant, would be just too much for me.

Owning Christopher’s has allowed us to live and work in this amazing community on this magical island!

On this journey we have made many lasting and wonderful memories and built countless treasured friendships.

We have felt connected with, and loved and appreciated by, our local community and we feel privileged to have been able to raise Sebastian and Tia here.

Coupeville is our home and we care very deeply about it.

Shortly after we made the decision to sell, we heard that Brian and Nancy Cedar, the former owners of the Greenbank Grille, were looking for an opportunity to again serve great food to our island community.

We reached out to them and were thrilled to discover that they were indeed very excited about the prospect of taking over Christopher’s to continue to build on what we have grown over the years and to give it their own personal touch.

We believe they will be a great asset to the community, and we look forward to seeing how they make it their own.

They will officially take ownership on July 1. Until then, business as usual at Christopher’s.

Lisa and I will be opening the pantry (in the building adjacent to the restaurant) for the last two days of June (Saturday, June 29 and Sunday, June 30) from 1:00 until 6:00 with a very limited menu.

Come by and say hello, we would love to see you!

Thank you for being part of our lives for the last 18 years, we will cherish it forever!

Andreas
