JV hardball squad crushes Turks

It was really close to perfection.

Despite the weather being lousy in Sultan Monday, the Coupeville High School JV baseball team was hitting on all cylinders.

Paced by a dominant pitching performance by hurlers Coop Cooper and Landon Roberts, the Wolves strolled to a 12-0 win in a game called after three innings.

The victory lifts Coupeville’s second squad to 3-1 on the season, with a home game against Mount Vernon set for this Wednesday, Apr. 13.

The Wolves came out aggressively Monday, pushing five runs across in the top of the first.

After tacking on two more scores in the second, Coupeville put the game on ice by dropping another five-spot in the final frame.

All 11 Wolves to see action reached base against the Turks, with CHS smacking five hits, walking nine times, and picking up free bases thanks to an error and a dropped third strike.

Hard-hittin’ 8th grader Camden Glover had the hottest bat on the day, bashing a single and double, while Cole Hutchinson, Cooper, and Roberts all collected a base-knock apiece.

Seth Woollett walked twice, with Peyton Caveness, Johnny Porter, Yohannon Sanders, Kai Wong, Roberts, Glover, and Cooper also picking up free passes.

Rounding out the offensive attack, Aiden O’Neill (error) and Gabe Reed (dropped third strike) both alertly took advantage of Sultan miscues to reach base.

The Turks didn’t have quite so much luck in getting base runners aboard, however.

Cooper and Roberts combined to toss a no-hitter, with just one Sultan batter reaching on an error.

The Wolf duo largely gave their defense the day off — except for Caveness, who was catching — recording all nine outs by way of strikeouts.

For Coupeville varsity coach Will Thayer, the win provided a cherry on top of an otherwise miserable day, as weather and a varsity loss combined to dampen spirits early.

“Good pitching and good plate discipline,” he said, then nodded and headed to the bus, hopeful of finally getting warm for the first time in hours.

Wolves whiff in Sultan

They’ve had better days.

Returning from spring break only to find miserable weather awaiting them in the wilds of Sultan Monday, the Coupeville High School varsity baseball squad stumbled.

Held to one hit over seven innings, while striking out a season-high 16 times, the Wolves fell 4-1 to the host Turks in a sloppy non-conference game.

The loss drops Coupeville to 5-5 on the season, but it gets a chance to bounce back with a Northwest 2B/1B League doubleheader Friday at La Conner.

For now, Monday’s clash against Sultan is one the Wolves would like to forget about quickly.

“Snow, rain, and freezing temps,” said CHS coach Will Thayer. “Just an all-around bad game.”

The Wolves fell behind 2-0 in the first inning and were never able to mount much of an offensive charge.

By the time it finally did score, pushing a run across in the top of the fifth thanks to a Sage Sharp walk, two errors and a Sultan wild pitch, Coupeville trailed 3-0.

The Wolves did mount a brief rally in the top of the seventh, putting two runners aboard after Jack Porter reached on an error and Scott Hilborn was plunked by a wayward pitch.

But that final hope died almost as quickly as it began, sending the Wolves back to the bus with their fourth non-conference defeat of the season.

Hilborn collected Coupeville’s lone hit on the afternoon, rapping a third-inning single, while Xavier Murdy and Sharp joined the Wolf junior in collecting walks.

Sultan did commit four errors in the game, but Turk pitchers TJ Hallsson and Derek Feltner were able to escape relatively unscathed thanks to frequent K’s.

Coupeville batters suffered strikeouts in every inning, with the third being the only frame in which the Wolves didn’t take at least two punch-outs.

CHS hurlers Jonathan Valenzuela and Hilborn countered the Turks, combining to whiff 10 Sultan hitters while tossing a no-hitter.

But the Turks used seven walks and two untimely Wolf errors to push their runs across.

Young Wolves stay scrappy

They finally get to go home.

Capping a three-game road trip Tuesday, the Coupeville Middle School girls basketball teams put up strong efforts in their clash at Granite Falls.

Now the Wolves get three consecutive bouts on their home floor, beginning with a matchup Thursday against King’s.

After that CMS hosts Lakewood Mar. 22 and Sultan Mar. 29, before finishing the season with a trip down-Island to Langley Mar. 31.

How the trip to Granite played out:

 

Varsity:

Squaring off with a rugged foe, the Wolves hung tough but fell 42-11.

“The entire team played good defense,” said CMS coach Kassie O’Neil, “But (we) couldn’t manage to keep the ball on offense, or make the buckets they did put up.

Hard-charging guard Haylee Armstrong “hustled hard the entire time and had a couple of breakaway layups” to pace the Wolves.

Kierra Thayer and Capri Anter joined her in the scoring column, with Anter rippling the net on a successful free throw.

 

JV:

Coupeville’s second squad was blanked 18-0 by the Tigers.

While the Wolves didn’t reach their offensive goals, they did score on defense, where the plan was to hold Granite to 25 points or less.

“The JV team is constantly improving their defense ability,” said CMS coach Kristina Forbes. “Still a few quirks to work out.

“One thing I can definitely say about my players is they always hold their head up high and have amazing composure with the losses and to me that is a win in itself!”

With many of the young Wolves in their first season of competitive basketball, Forbes is looking for improvement and hard work.

“My girls are slowly gaining their confidence on the court, and it shows,” she said. “Adeline Maynes worked that court last night with her hustle.”

Walk-off winner denies hardball squad

Two straight games with a walk-off winner.

Though, to be honest, the first time was a lot more fun.

A game after beating South Whidbey in its final at-bat, the Coupeville High School varsity baseball squad ended up on the other side of things Wednesday afternoon.

This time it was host Lynden Christian escaping with a 2-1 win, after the Lyncs used a pair of singles, a walk, and a Wolf error to push across the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The non-conference loss, coming against an always-tough Lync program, drops Coupeville to 1-2 on the season.

The Wolves get a chance to even out that mark Saturday when they host North Mason.

After that CHS kicks off Northwest 2B/1B League play, with seven straight games against conference rivals.

Wednesday’s game was a pitcher’s duel from start to finish, with Wolf hurlers Cody Roberts and Jonathan Valenzuela acquitting themselves quite nicely against Lynden.

The Lyncs plated one run in the second inning courtesy a sacrifice fly, then didn’t score again until the seventh.

Unfortunately, Coupeville couldn’t get its own offense into high gear for much of the day, scraping out its lone run in the top of the sixth.

Hawthorne Wolfe led off the frame with a triple, then scooted home on a groundout by Scott Hilborn, but CHS could have had more.

Valenzuela cracked a two-out double to give the Wolves a shot at snatching the lead away, only to find himself stranded at inning’s end.

Wolfe finished with two of Coupeville’s five hits, adding a single to his three-bagger, while Valenzuela (2B), Roberts (1B), and Jack Porter (1B) also collected base-knocks.

Hawthorne Wolfe and Co. came up just short in Lynden.

Road warriors stay scrappy

Step by step, they’re building a bright future.

Coupeville Middle School girls basketball players — many making their hardwood debut — continue to flash signs of brilliance, drawing approval from their coaches.

Thursday was the middle match-up in a three-game road trip, sending the Wolves to the wilds of Sultan to face off with one of the best programs in the Cascade League.

And while CMS absorbed a pair of losses, hoops gurus Kristina Forbes and Kassie Lawson exited content in the knowledge that their teams are trending in the right direction.

How the day played out:

 

Varsity:

Sultan’s middle school teams have been dominant in recent years, and the young Turks proved up to the challenge in a 43-7 win.

The loss drops Coupeville’s top squad to 0-3 on the season.

The hosts barreled out to a 15-0 lead after one quarter of play, then put the game on ice with a 12-5 run in the second frame.

Brynn Parker netted her first points of the season, pacing the Wolves with a team-high four, while Haylee Armstrong rattled the rims for a bucket, and Kierra Thayer swished a free throw.

Capri Anter caught some love from her coaches for her defensive play, including a tooth-rattling rejection of a Turk shot.

Liza Zustiak, Rhylin Price, Lexis Drake, Avery Williams-Buchanan, Tenley Stuurmans, and Valeria de Jesus Merino also saw floor time for Coupeville.

 

JV:

The Wolves fell in a game in which the Sultan scorebooks uphold a longstanding middle school tradition of not adding up.

Maybe it was 26-5. Maybe 25-5. Maybe 20-5.

We’ll never know for sure.

What we can attest to is Lexis Drake (4) and Melanie Wolfe (1) breaking into the scoring column for the first time during the 2022 campaign.

And a whole lot of hustle from the Wolves (0-2) on both ends of the floor.

“Willow Leedy-Bonifas was fierce for going for steals,” Kristina Forbes said. “They played great defense.

“Chelsi Stevens stepped up as a guard on offense and handled it well,” she added. “Adeline Maynes — a shorty — stepped up to help our posts with rebounds; she didn’t let the tall girls scare her away.”

Ava Carpenter, Price, Laken Simpson, Taylor Marrs, and de Jesus Merino also saw floor time for Coupeville, which wraps up its road trip with a journey to Granite Falls Mar. 15.

After that, the Wolves get three-straight home games.
