She’s a star on, and off, the field.

Coupeville High School grad Sarah Wright, now a softball player at Tennessee’s Sewanee: The University of the South, was named to the 2020-2021 Southern Athletic Association’s Academic Honor Roll.

To qualify, athletes had to record a grade point average of 3.25 or higher.

Wright was one of 264 Tigers across 21 SAA-sponsored varsity sports to earn the honor.

Sewanee’s softball team set a program record, with 11 players landing on the honor roll.

Through two pandemic-altered seasons on the diamond, Wright has shown she can be as successful in college as she was in high school.

The former Wolf hit .407 during her sophomore campaign, collecting 11 hits, including two doubles, while driving in five runs.

Through 26 career games at Sewanee, Wright sits with a .309 batting average, 68 at-bats, 21 hits, including two home runs and two doubles, and 12 RBI.

She has walked nine times, come around to score six times, and anchored the Tigers with her quick glove and explosive throwing arm behind the plate.

They like her style.

Coupeville High School grad Sarah Wright was honored last Friday by the Southern Athletic Association, tabbed to its All-Sportsmanship Team.

The SAA honored 21 sports in all.

Wright, now a sophomore at Sewanee: The University of the South, reps her school’s softball squad.

In its criteria, the SAA states it “places a special emphasis on good sportsmanship, great character, and fair play among all competitors.”

In between being nice to folks, Wright also had a strong campaign on the diamond.

The former Wolf finished her second season in Tennessee — a pandemic-shortened 10-game run — with a .407 batting average, collecting 11 hits, including two doubles, and driving in five runs.

Last spring, Wright’s season ended abruptly after 16 games, when Covid shut down college sports.

Despite not yet having played a full season of college ball, the former CHS valedictorian has piled up positive numbers when given the chance.

Through 26 career games at Sewanee, Wright sits with a .309 batting average, 68 at-bats, 21 hits, including two home runs and two doubles, and 12 RBI.

She has walked nine times, come around to score six times, and anchored the Tigers with her quick glove and explosive throwing arm behind the plate.

It was a fab finale.

They sat for three weeks, then had the first of two season-ending doubleheaders cancelled by weather, but the Sewanee: University of the South softball squad finally got back on the diamond Sunday.

With Coupeville grad Sarah Wright among those pounding the ball, the Tigers swept a twinbill from visiting Johnson (TN) to put a cap on their pandemic-shortened campaign.

Winning 11-10 and 13-3, Sewanee finished the season 4-6, winning three of its final five games.

The Tigers only played home games this time around, and had a much more limited schedule than many of its foes.

Johnson, for example, played 28 games to Sewanee’s 10.

Wright, a sophomore catcher, had an RBI single in the opener, then came back around to collect two hits in the nightcap, including a double.

It’s the Wright time to return

Break time is over.

Bouncing back from a three-week-plus break, Coupeville grad Sarah Wright went right back to tearing up the softball diamond Tuesday in Tennessee.

The former Wolf, who is now a sophomore at Sewanee: The University of the South, hadn’t played since March 6, thanks to the difficulty in scheduling games during a pandemic.

Wright and the Tigers are only playing home contests this spring, as well, as school administrators decided to restrict travel by their sports programs.

Tuesday, however, Fort Valley State University made the trip over from Georgia to start a four-game series, with a second doubleheader set for Wednesday.

The Wildcats, who attend a school where alumni include former NFL players Greg Lloyd of the Steelers and Ricardo Lockette of the Seahawks, won the opener 13-3, but Sewanee rebounded to win the nightcap 8-7 on a walk-off RBI single.

With the split, the Tigers are 2-4 on the season.

Wright had a productive day both behind and at the plate.

In the opener, the Tiger catcher walked, and smashed a pair of hits, including an RBI double to open the scoring.

Wright then came around to tap home herself, thanks to a two-bagger from teammate Peri Prestwood.

Sewanee led 3-2 headed to the fourth, only to have Fort Valley State suddenly find its mojo and start raining down runs.

Surrendering five-run bursts in the top of the fourth and seventh made life tough for the Tigers.

In the nightcap, Wright punched a pair of singles, with the first one driving home a run as Sewanee worked its way back from an early 3-0 deficit.

The Tigers reclaimed the lead at 6-4 heading into the seventh, and final, inning, before things got wild.

Fort Valley State tossed three runs on the scoreboard in the top half of the frame to go up 7-6, and were one out away from completing a doubleheader sweep.

With a runner at first and two outs, however, Sewanee found some magic.

Four straight Tiger hitters reached base, with RBI singles from Kendell Goodrum and Summer Vo tying, then winning, the game.

Through six games, Wright is first on the team in RBI, walks, batting average, and on-base percentage, while sitting second in hits and slugging percentage.

Wright notches academic achievement

She’s all about those academics.

Coupeville grad Sarah Wright is back on the softball field in Tennessee, catching and hitting cleanup for Sewanee: The University of the South.

But the former high school valedictorian continues to crush it in the classroom, as well.

Back on February 26 (but just announced to the public Monday morning), Wright and 33 other student/athletes were among the latest inductees into Sewanee’s Order of the Gown.

The university recognized 111 undergraduates overall.

To become an OG as a sophomore, Wright had to post a GPA average of 3.40 or higher across the previous two semesters.

It gets easier after that, as juniors need to hit a 3.20, while seniors can coast in at 3.00.

Baseball led the way with seven new OG members, while Wright and Hannah Clarke, a sophomore outfielder from Beaumont, Texas, repped the softball squad.

Sewanee’s diamond dandies are four games into a pandemic-shortened 10-game season, and return to action Saturday, March 20 when they host Centre College for a doubleheader.
