Aaron Trumbull

Aaron Trumbull works hard for two of his 116 points.

Numbers don’t tell you everything, but they are a start.

Pull out the biggest number — the number of points each Coupeville High School varsity basketball player has scored this season –and you can see at least one thing.

Makana Stone can put the rock in the bucket.

The junior is, by far and away, the leading scorer, boy or girl, averaging 15.5 per game. That’s more than four points ahead of Wiley Hesselgrave, the next highest at 11.2.

Of course, just seeing one number doesn’t tell you who’s been injured (Madeline Strasburg is 6th in scoring, but missed the first half of the season, while Dalton Martin is currently 8th, but was much higher before injuries ended his season), which can skew numbers.

And, of course, points are not the only thing which decide a basketball game. Rebounds, defensive intensity, the ability to maintain composure under fire, heart — all have a huge impact.

But points are the big, shiny number, so that’s what we’re looking at this morning, as the Wolves prepare for a road doubleheader at Chimacum.

If nothing else, it’s a place to start.

So, here you go — the glossiest of all stats (with the caveat that these are unofficial numbers compiled by me as the season has played out):

Kacie Kiel

A sweet outside shooter, Kacie Kiel is the #2 scorer for the Wolf girls.

It’s all about the points.

Well, really it isn’t. Defense, hard work, hustle, heart, intangibles — they all play major parts in whether a basketball team is successful.

But the game is decided on the scoreboard, and the team with the most points, however they got them, gets the win. So, it is kinda about the points.

Anyway, whatever side of the argument you fall on, running a list of how many points players have scored is quick, easy and eye-catching. So, we’re doing it again.

Now, before we get to the snazzy numbers, one caveat.

These are unofficial varsity scoring totals, compiled from stats I kept at home games and from coach reports from road games.

At various points, a lot of different people have kept the books for Coupeville High School this year, some more on top of things than others.

The Wolf coaches have done their best to pull things together after games, but I wouldn’t be surprised if a point or two has gone missing somewhere.

So, if you don’t like your totals, go through the score-books yourself and prove us wrong.

Or, better yet, go work on your defense and free throw shooting, cause that’s what really wins games, especially late in the season.

OK, enough chatter. The stats through Jan. 9:

Aaron Curtin

Aaron Curtin averages eight points a game, second best on the Wolf boys’ squad.

Makana Stone has the sweet scoring touch.

The junior leads all Coupeville High School basketball players in dropping in buckets thus far in the 2014-2015 season, and by a comfortable margin.

Through four games, she’s one slim point from having a 15.0 per game average, while the closest to her is Wiley Hesselgrave, who’s a point shy of pouring in nine a game.

Complete (unofficial) varsity scoring stats for the Wolves:

GIRLS (2-2):

Makana Stone — 59
Monica Vidoni — 25
Julia Myers — 21
Kacie Kiel — 20
Wynter Thorne — 19
Hailey Hammer — 17
