Zane Bundy, seen here on the charge in an earlier game, punched in his second goal of the season Friday in a 3-0 win.

Now they’re rolling.

Recording their second-straight 3-0 win Friday, the Coupeville High School boys’ soccer squad officially kicked off a winning streak.

This victory came in Puyallup, with host Cascade Christian bowing to the suddenly-potent Wolf attack.

Now 2-4-1 on the season, Coupeville will try and stretch the streak out to three when it travels to Forks Monday.

That will be a rematch (the Wolves knocked off the Spartans this past Monday on Whidbey) and will cap the non-conference portion of the schedule.

After that one, CHS has a run of six straight 1A Olympic League games beginning with a home game Thursday, Apr. 14 against Port Townsend (2-2-1).

Facing off with a win-less Cascade Christian squad Friday, the Wolves rattled home three goals, with three different players hitting the back of the net.

Abraham Leyva tallied his ninth goal, while keeping alive his streak of having scored in every game this season.

Fellow seniors Zane Bundy and Sebastian Davis netted scores as well. It was the second goal of the season for each of them.

Leyva and Zack Nall each picked up an assist while Wolf goalie Connor McCormick notched his second straight shutout.

“We played our best game to date,” said CHS coach Kyle Nelson. “A very balanced game with some great defense, and a quick attack going forward.”

CJ Smith had a new target Friday, but came through with the same old results.

Throwing to younger brother Hunter Smith instead of normal starting catcher Cole Payne, who was out with an injury, the Coupeville High School senior hurler tossed a four-hit, six-strikeout, complete-game shutout in La Conner.

The 8-0 non-conference baseball win was the second victory in the last three games for the Wolves and raised their record to 4-6 at the halfway point of the regular season.

While the Coupeville offense kicked in hard during the latter stages of the game, providing him with some breathing room, CJ Smith didn’t really need it.

Pitching on girlfriend Sylvia Hurlburt’s birthday, he retired 16 of the final 17 hitters he faced.

After letting La Conner get a pair of base runners in both the first and second, CJ Smith recorded the final out of the second inning on a come-backer.

From that point on he was all but flawless, giving up just an infield single in the fifth, while retiring the side in order in the third, fourth, sixth and seventh innings.

With Payne sidelined by a shoulder injury suffered in practice, Hunter Smith swapped out his infielder’s glove for a catcher’s mitt and matched his big bro in playing flawlessly.

He pounced on a little nubber that hit in front of the plate and skipped to the side, snaring the ball and whipping a throw to Kory Score at first in one fluid motion to kick off the third, bringing an ooh or two from an overflow Wolf fan section.

Proving they travel better than any other school, Coupeville hardball fanatics outnumbered La Conner’s hometown fans, and they got some bang for their buck early.

CJ Smith and Julian Welling crunched back-to-back one-out doubles in the top of the first, giving the Wolves the only run they would need on the day.

The Braves soft-tossing lefty starter managed to escape after that, though, and kept a pitcher’s duel going until the fourth inning, when Coupeville pounced on La Conner errors to tack on a second run.

Score led off with a hard shot down the third-base line that the Braves fielder juggled for an error, before Clay Reilly was nailed with an errant pitch and Dane Lucero laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third.

Wolf freshman Matt Hilborn then rapped a one-hopper into the hole at short for a fielder’s choice that plated Score.

Up 2-0, and even though he didn’t need it, Coupeville decided to bestow presents upon CJ Smith, breaking the game open with two more runs in the fifth and four in the sixth.

Joey Lippo lofted a pinpoint single to center to kick off the fifth, eventually coming around to score on a throwing error several batters later.

Welling slapped an RBI single up the middle to cap the inning, before the Wolves really went wild in the sixth.

A single from Lucero, a gorgeous drag bunt for a hit from Hilborn and an error that put Gabe Wynn on first juiced the bags with no outs.

After that, it was wham-bam-thank-you-ma’am, as Cameron Toomey-Stout lofted a sac fly to plate Lucero, Hunter Smith lashed an RBI single to send Hilborn home and CJ Smith knocked in Wynn and his brother with a two-run double to right.

Coupeville closed the game in style, with the Smith brothers working in tandem to wrap the seventh.

Hunter Smith tracked down an errant pop up behind home, before CJ Smith collected his final K, punching out the Brave hitter with some nasty heat.

The final out?

Poetic, as it was a slow chopper back to the mound, giving CJ plenty of time to pocket the ball, turn and lob it to Score before strolling off the field and out to a birthday dinner with the patiently waiting Hurlburt.

CJ Smith tossed a complete-game shutout Friday, as Coupeville rolled 9-0 at Concrete. (John Fisken photo)

This one was over quickly.

After playing one-run affairs in both of its first two games this season, the Coupeville High School baseball squad strolled through Friday’s game at Concrete.

Scoring in six of the seven innings played, the Wolves pounded their very accommodating hosts 9-0 to sweep a home-and-away series with the Lions.

Now 2-1 on the young season, Coupeville returns home to face Cedarcrest Monday and Sequim Tuesday, as they play four of their first five games on the prairie.

Making the drive off-Island didn’t seem to hurt the Wolves on the field or in their ability to draw fans, as a fairly large collection of Coupeville supporters showed up to watch the diamond men work.

Before all the traveling fans had even settled in, CHS put the game away, taking just three batters to score all the runs they would need on this day.

Hunter Smith led off, lashing a single to left, then came around to score on an RBI single to center from older brother CJ.

The elder Smith soon scampered around the base-paths himself, propelled by Cole Payne, who kept a recent hot streak alive by crunching an RBI double to deep right field that landed in the shadow of the snow-capped mountains.

While the initial assault quickly sputtered out, with a double play off of a fly-out by Dane Lucero (Payne was thrown out trying to advance to third) blunting the attack, it would be all CJ Smith would need.

The senior hurler went the distance on the mound and was untouchable most of the afternoon.

He retired the side in order in four of the seven innings, and gave up just a single base runner in two of the other three frames.

The only time Concrete was able to get anything going was in the bottom of the sixth, but CJ Smith never broke a sweat getting out of the mini-jam.

Bearing down, the unflappable righty got a Lion to pop out to Lucero at first, stranding multiple base runners and earning a fist pump from dad Chris Smith, who was pacing on the edge of the dugout.

Coupeville kept picking away at Concrete’s pitching staff, adding a single run in the the third, fourth and fifth, before dropping three in the sixth and another solo run in the seventh.

Lucero, Hunter Smith and Cameron Toomey-Stout knocked in runs to stretch the lead to 5-0, then the Wolves put together their best sustained rally in the top of the sixth.

Payne ripped a one-out single, Lucero smacked an RBI double, Gabe Wynn sent a screamer over the third baseman’s head for another RBI double and Brenden Gilbert eked out a bases-loaded walk and the rout was on.

Not content to stop with eight, Coupeville saved its most thrilling journey across home plate for the final inning.

With Payne perched on third, after another double and a wild pitch, Joey Lippo laced a grounder to the Lion first baseman for the inning’s second out.

The crafty senior crept down the line, then exploded at the last second, sliding under the frantic tag as Concrete’s catcher juggled the throw while trying to slap the ball on Payne’s leg.

Popping up to a roar from his own personal cheering section, Cole was all smiles, a familiar sight among Wolf players and fans on this afternoon.

Spreading a bit of international love.

Just in case you forgot where they are.

San Sebastian glows.

San Sebastian glows.

Still flawless in Spain.

Pulling off its second shutout in as many days, the NWU GU16 select soccer squad, which features four Whidbey island players, rampaged to a 6-0 victory at the Donosti Cup in San Sebastian.

With all four Island girls — Mia Littlejohn, Jenna Cooley, Malia Hansen and Kalia Littlejohn — contributing with a goal or assist, or both, NWU pounded Antigua Luberri BGE, which hails from Zumaia, Spain.

Now 2-0 in the tourney, which draws 400+ teams from 20+ countries, the Washington state squad has outscored its opponents 10-0 so far.

The most electrifying goal in game two may have come from Kalia Littlejohn.

The Coupeville High School freshman-to-be awoke memories of the professional players who have trod the pitch in the stadium she was playing in, punching in her goal on a header.

Back at home on The Rock, Wolf girls’ soccer coach Troy Cowan heard the news and hasn’t stopped smiling since.

CJ Smith, working quickly and effectively. (Shelli Trumbull photo)

Willie Smith likes to be home early for dinner.

So the Coupeville High School baseball coach had to be thrilled Thursday, when his starting pitcher, CJ Smith, tossed a quick shut-out and sent Coupeville to the parking lot with a zippy 8-0 win over visiting Chimacum.

The victory, the fourth straight for the Wolves, lifted them to 6-4 overall, 2-0 in Olympic League play.

It also gives them sole possession of first place in the league standings, though a big showdown looms in five days.

That’s when Coupeville travels to Klahowya (8-0, 1-0) to face the top-ranked 1A team in the first statewide coach’s poll.

With one non-conference game between now and then — Saturday at home against Friday Harbor (2 PM) — the Wolves are starting to click on all cylinders.

CJ Smith, ever cool and calm, used just 76 pitches to carve up the Cowboys.

It was the fourth straight complete game for the Wolf starting pitchers, with Smith having tossed two of them.

“Not only is that a great reflection on him and how hard he was pounding the zone, but, as I told the boys, it’s a reflection on how well we played behind him on defense,” Willie Smith said.

The Wolf hurler got strong back-up from Josh Bayne, who went far to his left in right center to erase a would-be double, and Kyle Bodamer, who made a sliding catch near the left field line to end the sixth inning.

At the plate the Wolves continued to show a patient eye, collecting nine walks and three hit batters (“I keep telling the boys, if they’re gonna wink at them, they’re going to get hit!!”) to go with six hits.

Aaron Curtin and Hunter Smith each rapped out a pair of hits, with Curtin knocking in three runs.

Regardless of how they got on base, once there, the Wolves ran wild.

“We ran the bases extremely well (10 stolen bases) and put a lot of pressure on their defense with our speed and aggression on the base-paths,” Willie Smith said.

Coupeville broke the game open with three runs in the second.

Hunter Smith rapped a single, stole second and went to third on a wild pitch, then Bayne walked and stole second as well.

Swinging a hot bat of late, Cole Payne cracked a two-run single, then scored on Curtin’s double.

The Smith brothers teamed up to kick-start a rally later, with Hunter plating CJ with his second hit of the afternoon, before Payne, Curtin and Bodamer all collected RBIs to end the day’s scoring.

The only downside for the Wolves was injuries to Bodamer (hamstring strain) and Payne (bum ankle), but both are expected to be back on their feet in time for the trip to Klahowya.
