One soars, the other scores.

Whether it’s ballet or baseball, or any of a number of other pursuits, the super-powered duo of Skyy and Joey Lippo are busy lighting up the Whidbey sports universe.

The twin terrors, who celebrate a joint birthday today, are headed into their junior year at Coupeville High School, having already made a huge impact in their first two years.

Along the way, they have kept proud parents Joe and Connie jumping in their roles of taxi drivers, team parents, ardent fans (and PR flacks).

Skyy, who started off in sports like softball alongside best friend Katrina McGranahan, settled into her niche when she found the world of dance.

Currently a company captain, a principal in contemporary dance and a soloist in classical dance, she’s achieved rare status by being tabbed for a role in Whidbey Island Dance Theatre’s upcoming production of The Nutcracker months in advance.

A veteran of the always-popular production, she hasn’t been told what her role will be this time around, but it’s believed to be the first-time a non-professional dancer has been picked so early

Which probably shouldn’t come as a surprise, since the elegant, tough as nails Miss Lippo has been abusing her toes twirling to new heights as a dancer all year, when she’s not busy working on rebuilding a ’72 Charger with her dad.

Her other half, Joey, hasn’t exactly been lying around the house, stuffing Cheetos in his face all summer either.

Coming off of a strong school sports season — he combined with Will Nelson to form a deadly doubles duo on the tennis court, then helped spark the Wolf baseball squad to its first league title in 25 years — Joey never put his mitt away as the weather turned hotter.

Instead he started traveling back-and-forth to the big city to play travel ball with the Seattle Bombers in the Seattle Elite League.

After a couple of games bouncing around positions (he was primarily a second baseman/catcher for the high school squad), Lippo ended up a starter in left field.

Once there, he made a concentrated bid for Sports Center-type glory, earning the moniker “The Cannon” for his laser-like throws, one of which doubled a runner off of first.

Now, he’s slid right back into the world of netters, as he and Nelson make a bid for the #1 slot.

After that, a possible return to basketball and then he’ll double-dip the high school and travel ball baseball experience again.

Now, of course, running down the laundry list of the Lippo’s various sports accomplishments only tells part of the story.

The twins are the complete packages, smart, friendly young adults who are fiercely loyal to each other, their friends and their family.

As they sail along setting new highs and making their bid for greatness, both Skyy and Joey brighten up the universe around them, reflecting extremely well on their parents.

Coupeville is lucky to have them, as athletes, and more importantly, as people.

So, from all of us in the peanut galleries, here’s to a hugely happy birthday, Lippo kids.

May you both never stop soaring towards stardom.

The dance is strong in these ones.

Five of Whidbey Island’s best stage warriors stormed the big time in Seattle Saturday and will return home bearing big honors.

They were performing as members of the Island Dance Performing Team at the Rainbow National Dance Competition.

And now we’ll flip you to our dance dad/constantly-tweeting man on the scene at the Highline Performing Arts Center, Mr. Joe Lippo, for the following report:

The alarm goes off at 5:30 AM…

Why? Because you have to be at the venue by 8, because you go on at 10.

And 5:45 PM.

That’s right, you’re going on stage a full 12 hours after you rolled out of bed.

How do you react to that? Most of you would just quit, but five girls from three Whidbey Island high schools reacted very, very differently.

But we are getting ahead of ourselves.

At the 10 AM show, the entire Island Dance Performing Team took the stage to compete in the Large Production class of dancing, and put on a heck of a show.

But, it was a new show, and all the kinks weren’t worked out yet.

They got third. They were mostly happy with that.

Mostly.

At the 5:45 performance, it was the highly competitive Small Production category.

Skyylynn Lippo (Coupeville), Kelsi Lampe (Oak Harbor) and Tessa Sherman, Grace Colby and Nikki Greene (South Whidbey) danced their hearts out, completed the piece, and then waited.

They were wiped out. Tired. Some still had solo acts later that day.

Coach Jamee Pitts was hoping for a third-place finish.

But it was a new piece, and all the kinks hadn’t yet been worked out.

In the dance world, when awards are handed out, the announcer says something like: “And in third place…”

Then the music from the piece will start. It’s kind of like the award shows.

So…

When third place was announced, then second place, with no mention of Island Dance, coach Jamee said “It’s OK, I’m still proud of those girls, they did their best.”

Only the last part of that sentence was drowned out by some very familiar music.

That THUD you may have heard this evening around 6:30 PM was jaws hitting the floor as Island Dance was announced as the new (if unlikely) regional champions.

Dancer Kelsi Lampe: “I heard them announce third and second, and I was thinking ‘OK, next year we will do better’ and then I heard OUR music playing!

“We all just looked at each other, not really believing it. Then we went and got the awards!”

The rumors are NOT true.

No tights, folks.

Coupeville High School athletes Cameron Toomey-Stout and Joey Lippo will be stepping up and onstage in this year’s Whidbey Island Dance Theatre production of The Nutcracker.

But, while the CHS guys (and some South Whidbey athletes whose names don’t really matter to my core Coupeville audience) will be joining Coupeville ballet veterans Sylvia Hurlburt, Skyy Lippo and Jessie Johnson in this year’s event, they have — so far — resisted all calls to slap on some tights and get me some major page hits.

Punks…

But A) it’s possible I really don’t understand the world of dance and B) I digress.

Back in reality land, as memories of Coupeville High School’s recent theatrical production of Stage Door (it starred a bevy of Wolf athletes like tennis ace Sebastian Davis and softball slugger Veronica Crownover) still linger, The Nutcracker is about to take over your life.

Performances are set for Dec. 11-13 and 18-20 (two shows on Saturdays) and tickets are going fast at http://www.widtonline.org/

So, why should you go, other than to avoid getting a purple nurple from Sylvia Hurlburt if you fail to show for a second straight year?

Wait, was she only speaking to me…

While I try to figure that out, we turn over the mic to proud papa (and closet Pittsburgh Penguins fan) Joe Lippo:

It’s time. Time for bumps and bruises received in practice to be ignored, aches and pains tempered with Motrin, and ankles to be taped.

Time to suit up and get out there and make the crowd happy!

Is it the start of hockey season? NO! It’s time for “The Nutcracker.”

Sylvia Hurlburt, Joey Lippo, Cameron Toomey-Stout and company will be turning in track shoes, football spikes and baseball cleats for two weeks of … dance?

That’s right, and Skyy Lippo, Island Dance Company Captain, is in charge.

She and Faith O’Brochta (the other captain of the company) are both old hands at this, with over 20 (yes, TWENTY) performances of “The Nutcracker” between them.

They know how it’s supposed to go, and they will not accept anything less than perfection, which is really the only way in the dance world.

Its either perfect, or it’s wrong. Period.

This isn’t the JV version of “The Nutcracker” either, this is the “start rehearsals in September” version.

Instructors are very vocal, and become more so as the show looms inexorably closer.

Some quotes from dancers and directors alike:

“STOP. What are we doing?? Contrast that with what we are supposed to be doing!”

“Take it from the top. 5 … 6 … 7 … CAN ANYONE HEAR ME COUNTING???”

“Spacing people…SPACING!!!”

“We are so not together.” “Where are we on this? The top…? OK, FROM THE TOP THEN!!”

“Is anyone paying attention? To anything?”

“Can anyone hear me? I said, can … hey turn that down. Can you hear me now?”

So, whether you know your Arabesque from your Croisé or not (and I mean, c’mon, what are you, a provincial rube?!? Spend some time on Wikipedia, folks), respect the work being put in and get your rear in a seat come show time.

Otherwise, I give Sylvia all of your addresses and the nurpling begins…

Is there any down time in Lippo Land?

I ask because it seems at times that twins Skyy and Joey Lippo, Coupeville High School sophomore sensations who celebrate a joint birthday Sunday, are always busy.

Joey is a three-sport athlete at CHS, one of the few to uphold the old tradition, and plays tennis, basketball and baseball for the Wolves.

His sister owns most of the family’s battle scars, however, competing in the much-more cutthroat world of dance.

A ballet star, Skyy was recently named as the youngest company captain in Whidbey Island Dance Theatre history, and has already performed in productions of The Nutcracker and Giselle.

Both have hit the road for their loves, with Joey attending national spring training for athletes in his age bracket, while Skyy went to Texas to study ballet.

And, both have a yen for projects out of the spotlight as well, with Joey doing time as an accomplished salmon fisher and Skyy having recently acquired a ’72 Charger that she and dad Joe will be working on.

Now, at this point we could go on and on with a very long list of their other accomplishments, but we do have to leave their proud papa with something to put on his Twitter.

From the outside looking in, my perspective on the Lippo twins is this — they’re good people.

Both Skyy and Joey are personable (though getting the Zen-like Joey to smile for the camera is lodged firmly on the list of hardest things for a professional photographer to accomplish) and excel in a quiet, do your job manner.

They accomplish a lot, but don’t spend much time boasting about their exploits or unnecessarily thumping themselves on the chests.

Runway ego doesn’t seem to be a problem for them, and the duo are happy to let others rant and rave about their awesomeness.

So, having elbowed their dad out of the way for a moment (it’s easy when he’s looking down at his fingers while tweeting), I’m here to do just that.

Take my word for it, the Lippo twins are among the brightest lights we have shining in Coupeville right now.

As they go forward and stack those accomplishments to the ceiling in the years to come, I look forward to writing much more about them.

Cause, first and foremost, unlike fellow Wolf twin terrors Jake and Josh Lord or Ana and Ivy Luvera, I can actually tell Skyy and Joey apart, which is HUGE for a somewhat lazy reporter.

But, most of all, it’s always so much easier to write about people you genuinely like.

And the Lippo twins? They’re killin’ it on the likability charts.

So, happy birthday, Skyy. Happy birthday, Joey.

Keep on keepin’ on, cause what you’re doin’? It’s working.
