Jump launches college track career

It begins.

Coupeville grad Taygin Jump made her college track and field debut Saturday in New York and claimed a top 10 finish in one of her events.

The former Wolf, now a freshman at Plattsburgh State, was competing in the SLU Saints Holiday Relays in Canton.

Competing in the weight throw (indoor track’s answer to the hammer throw), Jump launched the implement roughly 35 feet, six inches (converted from meters), finishing 10th out of 21 competitors.

She also threw the shot put 23-04.75.

Plattsburgh returns to action Dec. 8-9 with an appearance at the Utica Holiday Classic.

During her time at Coupeville High School, Jump was a member of two varsity teams, playing volleyball and participating in track and field.

As a spiker, she earned a spot on both club and school teams, and was a fireball, one of her teammate’s biggest supporters.

When spring rolled around, Jump threw the discus, javelin, and hammer, as well as running the 100, 200, 800, 1600, and 4 x 100 relay.

She competed in the state championships in hammer, setting a PR in the event.

Further and further away, the implement flies.

Despite adding the hammer throw to her repertoire late in her senior year, Coupeville track star Taygin Jump has shown amazing progression.

The first time the Wolf thrower let fly in a competition, back on April 28, she chucked it 56 feet, eight inches.

Move forward a month, and Jump launched the hammer 88-02 Sunday at the 23rd Washington State High School Hammer Championships at Evergreen State College.

She finished 21st overall in the girl’s competition.

The event, which came on the heels of the WIAA sanctioned state and field championships in Yakima, drew throwers from 24 schools ranging from 4A-2B.

Coupeville and Adna were the smallest schools represented, with 16 schools hailing from the 4A and 3A classifications.

This is the second year in a row the Wolves sent a competitor to the hammer throw championships, with Logan Martin finishing 2nd in the boys competition last year as a senior.

Jump, who competed in the 800, 1600, discus, hammer, and javelin as a senior, recently signed a letter of intent to continue her track exploits at SUNY Plattsburgh, an NCAA D-III school.

Go East, young woman.

Coupeville High School senior Taygin Jump is New York-bound after graduation, and she signed a letter of intent Monday to compete in indoor and outdoor track and field at SUNY Plattsburgh.

Founded in 1889, the school is an NCAA D-III school.

Jump is the third member of this year’s CHS track team to sign with a college, with Tate Wyman headed to Oregon Tech and Mitchell Hall off to the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

The young woman who currently has the third-best hammer throw among all 2B female athletes was a two-sport star for the Wolves, also playing club and school volleyball.

In the world of track and field, Jump vied in eight different events, running sprints and distance races, carrying the baton in relays, and throwing the discus, javelin, and hammer.

At SUNY Plattsburgh she’ll be a Cardinal, and the school mascot is known as Burghy.

The school has some notable alumni, but I’ll skip past disgraced congressman Anthony Weiner to land on my personal favorite on the list — lanky actor Tim Robbins.

He’s the star of films like The Shawshank Redemption, Bull Durham, and the Coen brothers unsung masterpiece, The Hudsucker Proxy.
