And then there were six.

The Coupeville School Board narrowed its list of candidates to replace departing Superintendent Steve King after holding an executive session Thursday night.

Who are those six? That part is hush-hush, for a logical reason.

With many of the candidates currently working in other districts, the search consultant firm being used by the school board recommended keeping names private through the early rounds.

It is believed that helped to increase the applicant pool, School Board president Morgan White said in a statement.

The six candidates still in play will be interviewed during another private meeting Tuesday, Mar. 26, with the three finalists publicly announced by Mar. 29.

The final trio will tour the Coupeville School District and meet with staff and community between Apr. 8-10.

A detailed schedule of stakeholder meetings will be released next week, with opportunities to meet candidates and provide feedback.

The current plan is to hire a new superintendent in April, with that person starting the job in July.

Whichever of the six candidates wins the top spot, school board members are looking forward to the positives they will bring to the job.

“We are hopeful about the future of our district,” White said. “And we are grateful for wonderful candidates who are eager to serve Coupeville Schools.”

The biggest potential free agent on the market is still out there, Cow Town. Get this thing done!

As the Coupeville School District conducts a superintendent search, no name delivers the same pizazz as Dr. Jim Shank.

And now, with the Longview School District choosing a different candidate Friday to fill its own open position, the dapper doctor could be back in play for a return to Whidbey Island.

Dr. Karen Cloninger, who is coming from Spokane, was chosen over two other finalists who both graduated from Longview-area schools — Shank and John Hannah.

So now the buzz gets going again.

Does Dr. Shank remain with the North Beach School District in Grays Harbor County?

Or will he consider bouncing back to reclaim the top seat in a Coupeville School District he led to great success from 2013-2018?

Will the lure of “The Sad Coyote” bring him back to Cow Town??

I’m asking you, for I do not know the answer.

School board members are notoriously tight-lipped and ultra-professional about stuff like this, and I haven’t been able to electronically bug all the district offices … yet.

But I know what I want, and that’s to see the man who gave us a new stadium, a new track oval, and both new bleachers and the Wall of Fame in the gym, come ambling back down Main Street.

Only time will tell how this story plays out, but I got a crisp fiver here to help sweeten the pot.

Don’t go for a single or try to leg out a double, Coupeville. Swing for the fences on this one.

Break the bank (if need be) for Shank!

Popular former Coupeville Superintendent Dr. Jim Shank is one of three finalists for a similar position with the Longview School District.

The district, located in Cowlitz County, sits in the Southwestern portion of Washington state and is infamous for being where I was born.

The Longview School Board announced its finalists this past Saturday and issued a statement pledging to choose a new superintendent Friday, Feb. 23.

A report in the local newspaper, The Daily News, details that Shank, Dr. Karen Cloninger, and John Hannah will participate in community forums Tuesday-Thursday at R.A. Long High School.

Cloninger is the assistant superintendent of East Valley School District in Spokane Valley, while Hannah is superintendent of the Morton School District.

Shank, who recently received a long-overdue induction into the Coupeville Sports Hall o’ Fame, is an R.A. Long graduate, a distinction he shares with Hannah.

During his time in Cow Town between 2013-2018, Shank oversaw construction of Coupeville’s stadium, its track oval, and new bleachers in the CHS gym.

He also played a large role in the creation of the school’s Wall of Fame, basically allowing me to run free if I agreed to retain the giant mural of “The Sad Coyote.”

“The Sad Coyote” sees all and knows all. He is eternal.

Two of the six Shank children, Matt and Brian, graduated from CHS, with a third, Ashlie, attending multiple years.

All three were successful athletes and strong students.

After leaving Coupeville, Shank was a superintendent in Idaho.

He and wife Sallie later returned to Washington state, as he currently leads the North Beach School District in Grays Harbor County.

Overall, Shank has 33 years of experience in education, with 15 as a superintendent.

They want to hear your thoughts.

The Coupeville School District Board of Directors are hosting a community forum Thursday, Feb. 15, seeking input on the hunt for a new superintendent.

The meeting is set to run from 6:00-7:00 PM in the high school’s Performing Arts Center.

Coupeville needs to replace Steve King, who is resigning after six years. His tenure as superintendent comes to a close at the end of the current school year.

School board directors hired the search consultant firm Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates to lead the scavenger hunt for his successor.

Kristine McDuffy and John Dekker, both former superintendents, are the lead consultants for the search process.

The forum is intended to offer “families, staff, students, and other community members” an opportunity to “help build a candidate profile that fits the needs of (the) school district.”

Dr. Jim Shank, ever dapper. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

The giant mural at the center of the Wall of Fame in the Coupeville High School gym is almost universally hailed as “the sad coyote.”

But while a lot of us would argue the painting by a hard-to-track-down artist doesn’t really look like the Wolf it’s supposed to represent, it endures.

And I enjoy gazing at it across the gym during volleyball and basketball contests, as it reminds me of the portrait’s #1 fan.

That would be Dr. Jim Shank, Coupeville’s superintendent during a successful five-year run between 2013-2018.

The adult in the room, the man who rocked a suit and tie like he was Cow Town’s dapper answer to Cary Grant, he was a straight shooter, a man of his word, a firm handshake in a world of too many limp palm clasps.

Well, I’m sure he still is all that and more, though these days he’s living the dream in Ocean Shores, where he’s running the North Beach School District.

That comes after serving several more years in his old-school Idaho stomping grounds after departing Coupeville.

While Dr. Shank and his family no longer live on Whidbey, their legacy endures.

During their time in Coupeville, he and wife Sallie had three of their children attend our schools — Matt, Brian, and Ashlie — and they all excelled as students and athletes.

Like mom and dad, the youngest Shank children were exemplary, and greatly brightened up the joint.

Dr. Shank and daughter Ashlie hang out at a game.

Dr. Shank, who was front and center at seemingly every Wolf sports contest and event — and never once fell asleep in the stands no matter how many things he was juggling — led the way for CHS and CMS as the district made numerous improvements.

Just from a sports standpoint, his tenure produced a laundry list of great additions.

A new track oval and facilities, new bleachers in the gym, a new stadium at Mickey Clark Field, and the aforementioned Wall of Fame.

He was indispensable in the creation of that installation, allowing me to basically do what I wanted, as long as I agreed to keep the “sad coyote” at the heart of things.

Dr. Shank was also the power on the throne when we did the 101st anniversary of Coupeville High School boys’ basketball and was a big proponent of the idea.

“You give David whatever he wants!”

During his time here, I found him to be one of the best superintendents I have witnessed in my 30+ years of writing about Wolf athletics and school room activity.

He always seemed willing to take the time to talk to anyone with concerns or questions, and regardless of his personal thoughts on a matter, truly listened to whatever we had to say.

Even if it was just me nattering on about often silly sports stuff.

You can call me a Shankaholic, and I hope people remember how much he did for our town, and the people who live here.

The man worked his rear off, knew when to glad-hand and when to stand firm, and offered an example of what we all want in the person at the top.

So today we swing open the doors on the Coupeville Sports Hall o’ Fame and welcome the dapper doctor to our digital shrine, where he joins several of his children.

After this, you can find Jim Shank up at the top of the blog, camped out in the “contributors” section under the Legends tab.

And when you’re in the gym Friday night as CHS basketball celebrates another Senior Night, take a moment to gaze up at the “sad coyote,” and see it in a different light.

Like Dr. Shank, who insisted we keep it as part of our heritage, it’s one-of-a-kind.
