Island rivalry clash postponed

Suddenly, Saturday is open.

Hours after the Coupeville High School boys basketball team postponed both of its weekend games, the Wolf girls have done the same with one half of their planned back-to-back.

While the CHS girls, unlike their male counterparts, still play tonight at Mount Vernon Christian, Saturday’s trip to Langley to face South Whidbey is off the board … for now.

“We will look to reschedule at a later date,” said Coupeville Athletic Director Willie Smith.

That means, for now at least, when the Wolves finish Friday’s tilts, the plan is for no more games until Jan. 4.

Covid derails Wolf boys games

A huge weekend for the Coupeville High School boys basketball program has been postponed.

Games Friday at Mount Vernon Christian and Saturday at home against South Whidbey have been cancelled due to positive Covid results during team testing.

The news affects both varsity and JV contests.

The games, Coupeville’s final ones before the holiday break, will be rescheduled at a later date, said CHS Athletic Director Willie Smith.

The Wolf girls teams are still set to play games against the same foes this weekend.

Friday’s varsity boys game would have been a battle for sole possession of first-place in the Northwest 2B/1B League, with Coupeville and MVC both 3-0 in conference action.

Two teams, wrong colors, many pics

One team’s already lost to Coupeville, and the other is about to do the same.

3A Oak Harbor, which couldn’t hold on to a 10-point lead against the 2B Wolves, and 1A South Whidbey, which arrives in Cow Town Dec. 18, faced off Saturday in a clash of the two Whidbey Island boys basketball teams which are NOT undefeated.

The Wildcats defended their home turf, sending the Falcons back out the door with a 58-26 loss and the sound of “airball!!” ringing in their ears — which set off some fans, according to social media.

With the win, Oak Harbor is 3-2 — while still dealing with the fact it lost to Coupeville, a school three classifications smaller — while South Whidbey falls to 1-5.

Rally queens KO arch-rivals

We own you. We still own you.

The Coupeville High School JV volleyball players are a bit like Aaron Rodgers, and they proved it Monday, rallying to win big in Langley.

Pulling out a three-set thriller, the Wolves completed a season sweep of arch-rival South Whidbey, knocking off the Falcons both at home and on the road.

The 25-17, 23-25, 16-14 win in its rival’s gym lifts Coupeville’s JV to 10-2 on the season, best record of any fall sports team in Cow Town.

Now comes the epic test, as the Wolves head home to host La Conner Tuesday.

The Braves JV hasn’t lost a Northwest 2B/1B League contest in 20-plus seasons, but Coupeville is just scrappy enough to believe in the dream.

For the moment, the young Wolves can bask in showing off their grit in Langley.

Most of its matches have been straight-sets sweep this season, so having to dig down deep for the victory is solid proof Coupeville can win in different ways.

That makes for a happy coach.

“It went well!,” said Wolf JV taskmaster Ashley Menges. “We were slow to start with energy and focus, but once we settled in it was a good match!

“This was really one of our first tests this season, which showed who my competitors are and how much they wanted it” she added.

“It was a good start to the week.”

Rough night in Langley

Maddie Georges doled out 10 assists.

It’s the toughest 24-hours-plus they’re likely to face all season.

The Coupeville High School varsity volleyball squad, which is enjoying a strong season, plays juggernauts on back-to-back nights to open what will be a busy week.

Monday night it was a trip to Langley to face South Whidbey, and the result was a bruising 25-6, 25-11, 25-11 non-conference loss.

The loss drops the Wolves to 8-4, while the Falcons, who already swept two matches from perennial powerhouse King’s, rise to 11-2.

Now, Coupeville will need to bounce back immediately, as it hosts La Conner Tuesday in a showdown for control of the Northwest 2B/1B League.

The Wolves are 8-1 in league play, with their only loss coming to the two-time defending state champ Braves, who are 9-0 in the conference, 12-0 overall.

Things stay busy after that, with Friday Harbor (1-7, 2-9) coming to Coupeville Thursday, before the Wolves return to Langley Saturday for the Island Invitational.

Monday night CHS ran into a South Whidbey squad which is playing some of its best volleyball of the season.

“South Whidbey had a very tough serve that worked us over,” said Wolf coach Cory Whitmore. “When given the chance, we were aggressive with our swings.”
