Ruthless.

Or, exactly the way you like to see them play.

Taking advantage of every Orcas Island error, while not committing a whole lot of their own Thursday, the Coupeville High School JV volleyball squad strolled to a straight-sets win.

Dominating play from start to finish, the Wolf spikers captured a 25-15, 25-10 home victory to remain perfect on the season.

Now 3-0, Coupeville’s JV has yet to drop a set in Northwest 2B/1B League action.

After polishing off Concrete and Mount Vernon Christian in earlier matches, the Wolves jumped all over the Vikings.

Orcas stayed close for a half-second, remaining within 6-5 in the first set, before Coupeville made its move.

When the Wolves struck, they did so with power and precision.

The first big blow came courtesy freshman Mia Farris, who popped a spike right down the middle of the floor for a winner, grabbing control of service from the visitors.

That sent Gwen Gustafson to the line, and she was electric, running off seven straight points on her serve.

The opening salvo was a crisp ace which dropped from the heavens and skidded away from the Orcas hitters, while three other points during the run came on serves which the Vikings also couldn’t get back into play.

One of the few times the visitors staged a mini-rally off of a Gustafson serve, the back-and-forth finished prematurely.

That’s because Wolf frosh Madison McMillan promptly rose up and unleashed a spike which crashed into the back corner for a decisive rally-ender.

Madison McMillan filled up the stat sheet.

From there, Farris, Taylor Brotemarkle, and Issabel Johnson all had strong runs at the service line, as CHS closed out the opening set with conviction.

The prettiest point came courtesy Brotemarkle, who bounded into the air as she approached the net, deftly dropping a hook shot over the heads of several Vikings who could do little but watch the ball bounce merrily away.

While Coupeville let Orcas hang around for a bit in set one, it did no such thing in round two.

Brotemarkle fired off some nasty serves — she had a team-high six aces on the night — and the Wolves jumped out to a 6-0 lead, effectively ending things right from the get-go.

Jada Heaton sparkled in set #2, twice teaming up with a friend to deny Orcas at the net.

The first block was made by a team-up between Heaton and Katie Marti, while the second featured Aby Wood getting in on the action.

Toss in a spike from Gustafson which sliced off a rival player’s knee-cap, and one from McMillan which blew a large crater in the hardwood floor as it slammed down, and Coupeville coasted in for the win.

A look at the stat sheet backs up what fans saw with their own eyes — it was a remarkably consistent team-wide attack, sure to make coach Ashley Menges dream happy dreams.

McMillan pounded home four kills to pace the Wolves, while she and Johnson each had three digs.

Marti topped the team with two assists, with Farris and McMillan both collecting three aces to go with the six from Brotemarkle.

No mercy.

Smashing 40 service aces on opening night, the Coupeville High School JV volleyball squad scorched host Concrete in straight sets.

Despite playing with just seven players, the Wolves romped to a 25-8, 25-7, 25-6 victory Thursday, kicking off year two for CHS player turned coach Ashley Menges.

“I’m very happy that we’re starting the season off strong,” she said. “And I’m very proud of these girls for putting in so much effort through a hectic first couple of weeks.”

Coupeville pounded away at the service stripe all night, with freshmen Taylor Brotemarkle (playing on her 15th birthday) and Mia Farris dropping 13 aces apiece.

Fellow frosh phenom Madison McMillan added seven aces, with Gwen Gustafson (4), Issabel Johnson (2), and Aby Wood (1) chipping in.

“It was a night full of serving, which is great to see since we would definitely recognize it as one of our strengths,” Menges said.

“Playing with only seven girls, they adapted well and showed they can last and outlast,” she added. “With the few chances we had to work on our free ball transition and offense, the girls played very clean volleyball all night.”

Everyone on the floor racked up some sweet stats on opening night, with Brotemarkle dealing out nine assists, and McMillan adding two kills and two digs to her seven aces.

Gustafson (three kills), Johnson (three digs), Jada Heaton (two kills), Farris (two kills), and Wood (one kill) rounded out the strong team-wide effort.

The young Wolves get three straight matches at home after this, with Mount Vernon Christian (Sept. 14), Orcas Island (Sept. 16) and Cedar Park Christian (Sept. 20) all due to visit Whidbey.

The first two, like the Concrete match, are Northwest 2B/1B League tilts, with CPC being a non-conference rumble.

Taylor Brotemarkle has big dreams.

The Coupeville High School freshman-to-be is coming off a very-successful trip to the state tourney with the Whidbey Island All-Star juniors softball team.

Brotemarkle and her squad, which included seven girls each from Coupeville and Oak Harbor, rolled to a district title, then split four games at the big dance, finishing fourth out of eight teams.

As the Inferno eliminated teams from Puyallup and Mukilteo, a key player, on both offense and defense, was their go-go sparkplug.

A three-sport athlete who loves the animated super hero film Incredibles 2, hanging out with her pack of close friends, and attending language arts class, she’s part of a very-promising group from the CHS Class of 2025.

Now, as Brotemarkle gets ready for the next stage of her school days, she has a bold plan in place for her high school athletic career.

“(I want) to win a state title for softball,” she said.

Don’t doubt her commitment to the cause, as Brotemarkle has already shown a strong work ethic, and a high desire to achieve.

The young star, who delights in “the memories I get to make, and the competitiveness” of being an athlete, hails a future teammate and a current coach with a close personal connection for their help along the way.

“My friend Bella (Whalen) has helped me grow so much as an athlete, as well as my mom, (Kimberly), who is one of my softball coaches,” Brotemarkle said.

After playing volleyball, basketball, and softball through middle school, she plans to “definitely stick with softball as well as volleyball” in high school.

While she enjoys, and excels, in all of her activities, Brotemarkle would choose diamond life as her #1 path.

“Softball (is my favorite), because I have one of the most amazing groups of girls for a team,” she said. “And they make it so much fun, and we have made such great memories.”

One island, ready to thump on everyone else.

North and Central Whidbey are teaming up for the next round of little league Juniors softball competition.

With seven players from each league, the Whidbey Island Inferno All-Stars are a well-balanced squad, with hopes of making it all the way to the state tourney.

“This is a really solid team with strong pitching, hitting, and depth at each defensive position,” said coach Fred Farris. “It is going to be a lot of fun watching these girls compete this post season.

“Special shout out to North Whidbey manager Shelly Ryder and Central Whidbey coaches Shawn Calkins, Bella Blazek, and Philip Brotemarkle for all their time and efforts for helping get this team ready for the post season.”

The Inferno host a combined South Skagit/Sedro-Woolley/Burlington team in a best-of-three showdown this weekend, with the winner advancing to the big dance.

All games are at Rhododendron Park in Coupeville, with Game 1 at 11 AM Saturday, June 26, and Game 2 at 3 PM the same day. The concession stand will be open.

If a winner-take-all Game 3 is necessary, it will be June 27.

The District 11 champ travels to Vancouver for the state tourney, which kicks off July 10.
