There’s a new volleyball program on the Island and the people behind it want to meet you.

The Whidbey Volleyball Club, which will be open to players ages 10-18, has two parent/player meetings coming up to answer questions before team tryouts.

The meetings are Nov. 14 at the Coupeville High School gym and Nov. 15 at Oak Harbor High School’s Student Union Building.

Both events kick off at 7 PM.

WVC is a nonprofit organization and a member of the Puget Sound Region of USA Junior Volleyball.

Tryouts are Nov. 20 at Oak Harbor High School (registration starts at 12:30, with tryouts from 1:30-3:30).

The season runs through the spring.

Want to play select softball on Whidbey? Now’s your time.

Island Tsunami Fastpitch Softball is holding tryouts Aug. 10-11 for players interested in joining the current 12U squad or a newly-forming 14U team.

Tryouts will be at Rhododendron Park from 6-8 PM both nights, with registration starting at 5:30.

If players are unable to attend those tryout nights, private tryouts can also be set up.

Have a burning desire to take your volleyball skills to a higher level?

Then the Whidbey Fury want to hear from you.

The local club team, which recently added Coupeville High School coach Breanne Smedley as an assistant director, will be holding parent informational meetings and tryouts for girls ages 10-18.

There will be two parent/player meetings, with the first one 7 PM Wednesday, Oct. 21 in the CHS Health Room (just inside the main doors of the high school gym).

A second meeting will be held 7 PM Nov. 4 at the North Whidbey Middle School gym in Oak Harbor.

Tryouts will be held at North Whidbey Middle School and broken down by age groups.

Girls ages 10-14 will tryout Nov. 11 from 4-6 PM while those who are 15-18 will go Nov. 15, also from 4-6.

Registration begins at 3 PM both days.

Players will be evaluated on existing and potential skill level, effort and attitude, sportsmanship and interaction with coaches and other athletes.

You should have court shoes and water with you.

To register before tryouts, go to www.psrvb.org and select “Whidbey Fury” as your club. You will pay an initial $5 tryout fee to PSR.

Copy and print off your registration and bring it with you to the tryouts.

Swing big, swing local!!

Keep it local.

That’s what area softball players and their parents would like to do.

While a group of Coupeville sluggers have been traveling off-Island to play for a select softball squad, the goal is to build a U16 team right here on Whidbey in time for the 2016 season.

The team, which would be open to players from North, Central and South Whidbey (unite to pound on the mainlanders!), would feature athletes who are 16 or younger as of Dec. 31 of this year.

P.S. — If there was a Whidbey-based squad, it would be easy for media outlets such as this one to cover home games in person.

Hence, more publicity for players who might be hoping to garner attention from colleges. And more stories for me.
