Keep it local.

That’s what area softball players and their parents would like to do.

While a group of Coupeville sluggers have been traveling off-Island to play for a select softball squad, the goal is to build a U16 team right here on Whidbey in time for the 2016 season.

The team, which would be open to players from North, Central and South Whidbey (unite to pound on the mainlanders!), would feature athletes who are 16 or younger as of Dec. 31 of this year.

If interested, contact Justine McGranahan for tryout information.

The softball guru (and master score-book keeper) can be called or texted at (360) 720-8436 or emailed at whidbeylegends@yahoo.com.

P.S. — If there was a Whidbey-based squad, it would be easy for media outlets such as this one to cover home games in person.

Hence, more publicity for players who might be hoping to garner attention from colleges. And more stories for me.

Win-win, ladies. Let’s get this thing done.

Whidbey to Wenatchee and back, medals in hand.

That’s the trip a group of Special Olympics basketball players from The Rock made this week, as the six-player South Whidbey Wind squad captured bronze at the state tournament.

The Junior/Senior team (for players 21 and under) included Talia Petosa, Andrew Bishop, Zoe Thompson, Lucas Etzell, Amira Jackson and Dylan Matros.

The squad, which draws players from South, Central and North Whidbey, had previously won gold at regionals.

They are coached by Mike Etzell and David Bishop.

Let the smack-talkin’ flow from your heart, brothers and sisters.

It may be non-conference. That doesn’t matter.

When the bus departs Langley and heads up the Island today, destination Cow Town and the gym that resides at the heart of it, it is rivalry night.

Four games, one night to claim Whidbey supremacy.

On one side, the red and black. On the other, the blue and white.

Coupeville vs. South Whidbey. One rumble for the fate of the known universe.

In the big gym, it’s boys’ varsity at 5:15, followed by the girls at 7.

Flip the order and jump across the hallway to the middle school gym, and you have the JV schedule.

The night features the team with the best record on the Island (the Wolf girls at 7-4) and the next three best (Wolf boys at 3-7, Falcon boys and girls at 3-8 each).

And yes, Oak Harbor sits up there next to the navy base. I’m aware of that.

I’m also aware its varsity teams are a combined 2-19, so not a whole lot of people are watching them right now. At least with their eyes open.

If you want basketball, if you want war, you’ll be in Coupeville and your butt will be in the bleachers.

Wolf Nation or Falcon faithful, bring the noise. This one’s personal.

It may be time to pack away your bowling ball and head to Oak Harbor.

Word surfaced Thursday afternoon that Ebey Bowl’s revival is coming to an end.

The long-time Coupeville bowling alley sat shuttered for nearly a decade before siblings Matt Iverson and Mimi Johnson reopened it to great acclaim a little over four years ago.

There was a momentary pause in mid-2013, but, after some work behind the scenes to allow the owners more time with their families and insurance business, the alley was back at it in October of that year.

Now, it appears time has finally run out on the local landmark.

In a posting on the alley’s Facebook page this afternoon, Iverson and Johnson had the following to say:

Just want to say a quick thank you to those that have supported us over the years. We appreciate the business.

With that being said, this Island is too small to support our little alley anymore.

We are closing our doors by the end of the month. Our last day of business will be the 17th.

For those that have private parties already booked and paid for no worries. We will still honor our commitment to you.

Also, we are still going to be doing PE for the Middle and High School (we wouldn’t miss out on that for anything)!

Thanks!

Mimi & Matt

Vote "A" for the immortal Mr. Ed.

Mr. Ed is crying inside. “Dang it, if a ref was gonna make the national scene for being obtuse, I thought it would be me!!”

Our secret is out.

Thanks to the next-level muckrakers at Deadspin, the whole world is learning the truth — basketball refs working on Whidbey Island might not be the best the business has to offer.

For every time we here in Coupeville have complained about the gum-chomping, overly-preening “Mr. Ed” and his band of merry miscreants, at least they have never answered a cell phone and talked on it for a minute while a game was being played in front of them.

And yet, that’s just what one ref did recently at a game between Oak Harbor Middle School and North Whidbey Middle School.

Seriously.

No, really.

Doubt me? Jump over and see the proof:
