Runnin' and gunnin'.

Runnin’ and gunnin’.

I have been ferociously sick for several days, so this is gonna be quick.

You caught me out of bed for a sec, and I just noticed one of Coupeville High School’s most dynamic young stars has a birthday today.

Abraham Leyva torched the net during last year’s boys’ soccer season, teaming with running mate Zane Bundy to give the Wolves one of the more dangerous goal-scoring combos in the 1A/2A Cascade Conference.

Now, as the duo prepare for the move into a new challenge — the 1A Olympic League — I’m thinking things like league titles and MVP awards.

To which I say, make it so.

And then I say, I’m going back to bed.

But first, a very big HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Mr. Leyva! May all your goals come true in this next year.

The Washington Rush

Best team in the ‘Hood.

That’s where the Washington Rush boys’ select soccer squad and its two CHS sharpshooters, Zane Bundy and Abraham Leyva, finished Sunday.

Winning three out of four games, the Rush captured the Blue Championship Playoffs title in BU17-BU19 Gold action at the Nike Mt. Hood Challenge.

With Leyva scoring twice and Bundy once, the Rush outscored their opponents 7-3 over the three-day tourney.

The Rush opened by blasting the Pacific FC B95 Rangers, then made their only slip-up of the weekend, falling 1-0 to West Linn HS B96.

After that it was nothin’ but a good time, as the Rush roared back to win both of its championship round games.

A 2-1 win over West Deportivo Valencia put them in Sunday’s championship game, and they knocked off an FWFC B97 Blue squad 1-0 to claim the title.

The only thing the Rush missed out on was a rematch with West Linn, which fell in the semifinals.

Leyva and Bundy, who have been traveling and competing with the Rush for most of the summer, will both be juniors at CHS in the fall. They were Coupeville’s top two scorers as sophomores.

One pesky team.

That was all that prevented Wolf soccer stars Zane Bundy and Abraham Leyva from bringing home a select soccer championship this weekend.

Playing with their BU17 Washington Rush squad at the fourth annual Rush Cup at Skagit River Park, the CHS sharpshooters helped their team finish second in the gold division.

The Rush opened with hard-fought ties against Pacific Northwest 98 Maroon (1-1) and Pacific Northwest 97 Blue (2-2) before being upended 4-1 by Washington Premier FC White.

Bundy, Leyva and Co. bounced back for a 1-0 win over Pacific Northwest 97 Maroon in the semifinals to earn a second crack at Washington Premier.

But a miracle comeback wasn’t to be, as the Rush fell 3-0 in the championship game.

Both of the Coupeville stars had strong weekends, with Leyva collecting an assist and Bundy raining down goals.

He scored Saturday on a beautiful shot that left mom Janine gnashing her teeth when she was unable to capture the score on video, then popped the ball into the back of the net during a shootout in another game.

Both booters will be heading into their junior years at CHS in the fall.

The high school season is over, but the pitch warriors play on.

Zane Bundy and Abraham Leyva, who will be juniors at Coupeville High School in the fall, are playing select soccer with the Washington Rush premier squad this summer.

After winning a recent tournament, the Rush and its Wolf sharpshooters made a long run at the Nike Crossfire Challenge Cup last weekend.

The Rush upended the Kitsap Puma 2-0, RSA Elite 2-0 and Crossfire Oregon Black East 1-0 to advance to the quarterfinals, before falling 4-0 to the Washington Timbers.

The squad played that last game without their regular coach, who was suddenly called out of town.

Even though they didn’t get a title, playing at the Crossfire Cup gave Bundy and Leyva a chance to show their skills off in front of people they may hear from in the future, as the tourney draws a large contingent of college coaches who come to appraise talent.

Zane Bundy, the matinee idol of CHS soccer.

Zane Bundy, the matinee idol of CHS soccer.

Zane Bundy is the real deal.

He had a huge breakout season this year on the soccer pitch for Coupeville High School, popping goals (he was the second-leading scorer) and assisting on a ton more.

After seeing limited time as a freshman, he was electric as a sophomore, teaming with fellow tenth grader Abraham Leyva to herald the arrival of something CHS rarely had a season ago — offense.

Bundy lit up the net, helped carry Coupeville to a stunning win over South Whidbey and always looked good doing it, rockin’ the best kicks on the team.

It’s still kind of weird for me to see him stepping front and center as a star athlete, because my earliest memories of Zane, who celebrates his 16th birthday today, are of a little kid zooming around Videoville and David’s DVD Den, during my years behind the counter.

Now, he’s a stylishly-dressed two-sport athlete (tennis and soccer) and Homecoming royalty who boasts dance moves that rival the best of Jagger and Swayze.

Through it all, he has remained the same good-natured, super-friendly little dude (well, maybe not little, as he’s actually fairly tall now) he always was.

And you know what? Coupeville is lucky to have him, both as an athlete and as a first-class person.

Happy birthday, Mr. Bundy. The best is yet to come.
