Let's get it on!

Let’s get it on!

Soccer balls were flying all over the playing fields at Fort Nugent this weekend.

The annual Rock On 3v3 tourney attracted 60 teams and 320 participants, who all competed in a fast-paced game on a small field with no goalies and limited players.

The Coupeville-based squad of Kicks With Dre, headlined by current and former Wolf stars (Zane Bundy, Grayson Knott, Andre Stone, Evan Amulexen-Coleman and Travis Curtin), ran away with the adult division.

Their opponent in the final was almost a veteran squad comprised of local coaches and dads, the OGFC.

That squad (Sean LeVine, Mark Bundy, Kyle Nelson, Ben Leyva and Robert Wood) went unbeaten at 1-0-2, but came up just short of a win in its final match to get to the championship.

Multiple teams boasted talent from the the Whidbey Islanders GU18 select soccer squad, as well.

Sophomore Abraham Leyva scored a team-high 11 goals this season.

They weren’t even supposed to be there.

Having beaten the odds by using a technicality to pluck away a district playoff spot that originally belonged to Friday Harbor, the Coupeville High School boys’ soccer team was playing with little to lose Wednesday night.

Any dreams the Wolves had of netting a win and continuing to play on through the weekend came to a quick end, however, as host Mount Baker unleashed a barrage of shots on goal.

Riding a 25-6 shot advantage, the Mountaineers claimed a 3-0 victory and bounced CHS out of the postseason.

Coupeville, which got most of its scoring this year from the sophomore duo of Abraham Leyva and Zane Bundy, wrapped up its first season under new coach Kyle Nelson at 5-10-2.

That was a step up from a year ago, when the Wolves went 3-14.

Much will change next season, as Coupeville loses seven players to graduation and changes leagues, jumping from the 1A/2A Cascade Conference to the 1A Olympic League.

Seniors Sean Donley, Cameron Boyd, Jason Knoll, Gunnar Langvold, Josiah Campbell, Jared Dickson and Brett Arnold have played their final game in the red and black.

Mount Baker, which got goals on headers from Manuel Mendez, Alex Tyska and Jesus Torerro, advances on to play South Whidbey, which beat Meridian 2-1 in overtime.

King’s and Blaine will play in the other semifinal, with all four teams already guaranteed a trip to tri-districts.

A bump in the road.

A really big, extremely rocky bump that possibly throws out your whole transmission.

That’s what the Coupeville High School boys’ soccer squad hit Wednesday night as it kicked off the second half of the season.

Missing four varsity players (two to injury, two to academic ineligibility), a very-thin Wolf team suffered their worst loss of the season, by far.

Falling 10-1 at Cedarcrest, Coupeville dropped below .500 for the first time this season.

Now 4-5 overall, 3-5 in Cascade Conference play, the Wolves have seven games left to make a charge for a playoff spot. King’s and South Whidbey tied 1-1 Wednesday, helping keep the race for the two 1A postseason berths fairly tight.

The Falcons are 5-2-1 in league play, while King’s is 4-3-1. Of the three 1A schools in the 1A/2A league, the top two teams advance to the playoffs.

Coupeville will have a chance to surge forward Friday, when it travels to South Whidbey looking for a season sweep of its Island rivals. CHS won the first battle 2-1 Mar. 28.

The Wolves may be down even more players, though, as sophomore Zane Bundy, who punched in his team’s only goal against Cedarcrest, may have a concussion.

Bundy tallied his fifth score of the season off of an assist from Abraham Leyva.

Leyva knocked in a goal of his own late in the game, but what would have been his eighth score of the year was waved off when the refs whistled Coupeville for being off-sides.

Seven Cedarcrest players found the back of the net, with the trio of Chris Cole, Austin Paxman and Nikolas Reierson hitting for two goals apiece.

“There were some stretches where we played quite well,” said Coupeville coach Kyle Nelson. “Unfortunately, there were some times where we let down.

“They were a quality opponent who were playing very well on their home field,” he added. “We will regroup and get ready for the next game.”

Abraham Leyva

Abraham Leyva has the magic touch.

The Coupeville High School sophomore is currently tied for the Cascade Conference boys’ soccer scoring lead with a pair of Archbishop Thomas Murphy players.

Leyva has punched in six goals for the Wolves (4-3 overall, 3-3 in league play), which leaves him in a dead-heat with ATM scorers Christian Thode and Brady Henderson for the scoring title.

And he’s getting help, as fellow CHS sophomore Zane Bundy has found the back of the net four times, tying him with South Whidbey’s Jeff Meier and King’s Forrest Perry for third on the scoring chart.

Eight players have scored four or more times, with a pair of players from King’s — Taylor Moe and Ryan Fransen — having tallied five apiece to tie for second.

Josh Datin was called up to varsity action and played solid defense in the victory.

The goals came back.

A game after suffering its first shutout of the season, the Coupeville High School boys’ soccer team rediscovered its shooting touch and peppered visiting Granite Falls Friday night.

With Abraham Leyva scoring twice, the Wolves pounded the winless Tigers 4-1 to clinch a better record than the squad had last season — and they still have more than half the regular season left to play.

Now 4-3 overall, 3-3 in Cascade Conference play, CHS moved into a tie with King’s for the second 1A playoff spot out of the 1A/2A league. The Knights are 4-4, 3-3 after losing 4-2 to Cedarcrest Friday.

Coupeville travels to Everett to play the first of two match-ups against King’s Tuesday, April 15, the start of four straight games on the road.

Included in that span is a rematch with South Whidbey (6-2, 4-2), which holds a slim edge among 1A teams, despite a 1-0 loss to Archbishop Thomas Murphy Friday.

Coupeville won the first meeting of the Whidbey rivals this season.

Two of the three 1A schools in the eight team league qualify for the postseason.

With the win Friday, the Wolves assured themselves that, even with nine games left on the schedule, they will finish better than the 2013 squad, which went 3-14.

Coupeville did it, as they have all season, with an electrifying offense that caused soccer mom Janine Bundy to declare “Sweet victory! It was fun!!!”

Her son, sophomore sensation Zane Bundy, bounced back from a recent lung infection to break open the scoring a mere 45 seconds into play. It was his fourth goal of the year.

After that, the goals came fast and furious, with senior Sean Donley punching in his second of the season and Leyva hitting twice to run his team-leading total to six.

Joel Walstad got the win in goal for the Wolves, who also gave playing time to two JV hustlers.

Ryan Freeman and Josh Datin made the transition and both had an impact, with Freeman pushing hard on offense and Datin scrappin’ on D.
