Lyla Stuurmans was part of a landmark team.
The Coupeville High School grad is heading into her sophomore season of playing volleyball at Skagit Valley College, but first the former Wolf and her fellow Cardinal spikers can bask in the afterglow of last year.
For the first time in program history, SVC volleyball earned the American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award, which is given to squads who maintain a year-long 3.3 GPA or higher.
Stuurmans and crew finished the 2025-2026 academic year with a team GPA of 3.52, soaring well above the requirements.
While they were showcasing their big brains, the Cardinals also did well on the court, finishing 17-15.
Stuurmans played in 30 of 32 matches, racking up 175 kills, 73 digs, eight solo blocks, 41 block assists, and 21 service aces.
SVC kicks off its new season August 21, with matches against Whatcom College, which features former CHS star Mia Farris, set for Oct. 7 and 30.
