It’s early, but everything is trending upward.
The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association has entered the chat, releasing its first Rating Percentage Index rankings, and the computers are firmly in favor of both Coupeville High School soccer squads.
The Wolf boys, who sit at 2-0 heading into a Thursday home clash with Friday Harbor, open at #3 out of 22 schools in the 2B/1B rankings, trailing just Upper Columbia Academy and two-time defending state champ Orcas Island.
Meanwhile, the CHS girls, coming off an impressive shutout win against Providence Classical Christian, are #6 in a field of 47 schools.
The Wolves (2-0-1) are the top-rated Northwest 2B/1B League team currently — at least according to the WIAA computers — with Northwest Christian (Colbert), Brewster, Upper Columbia Academy, Davenport, and Chesterton Academy comprising the top five.
RPI, while fun to debate, doesn’t ultimately control anything.
The statistical system, which uses winning percentage, opponents’ winning percentage, and opponents’ opponents’ winning percentage, comes in to play only after teams have advanced to the state tourney.
After that, RPI is “one tool utilized by the seeding committees to determine first round bracket pairings.”
