They fought back but then ran out of gas.
Squaring off with Island rival South Whidbey Wednesday, the Coupeville High School varsity volleyball squad rallied to push the host Falcons to four sets but couldn’t pull off the complete comeback.
Eventually falling 25-15, 25-16, 15-25, 25-9 in a non-conference rumble, the Wolves drop to 0-2 on the young season.
Both losses have come in four sets to larger schools, with the South Whidbey defeat following on the heels of a match against 4A Mariner.
Up next is Coupeville’s Northwest 2B/1B League opener when it hosts Orcas Island (0-1) Friday afternoon.
Varsity is set to tip at 3:30 PM, with JV playing second in case the Vikings run out of time and have to make a run for the ferry.
While Wednesday’s trip to Langley didn’t end the way the Wolves would have wanted, the match did feature the first varsity kills for fast-rising freshman Rhylee Inman, while junior supernova Tenley Stuurmans filled up the stat sheet, hitting on all six major categories.
