It was an eventful day.
Competing Saturday at the 47th annual Carl Westling Invite in Langley, the Coupeville High School cross country squad had one runner fall, but get back up to notch a top time.
Another Wolf was stung by a bee, and runners had to adjust to a different course from previous years due to construction at South Whidbey High School, with the temporary layout featuring “two gnarly hills.”
Oh, and head coach Elizabeth Bitting, competing in the open race for non school runners, earned 6th place, collecting a medal to go with ones claimed by freshman Anna Powers and sophomore Cyrus Sparacio.

Overall, the meet drew 29 high school teams, and another seven in the middle school part of the competition, with the high school harriers traversing a 5,000-meter course which included “forest trail, grass, gravel, and track surface.”
The day’s races were divided into two divisions, with 3A and 4A schools competing in a large school rumble, while schools from 2A, 1A, 2B (like Coupeville), and 1B vying in a small school showdown.
With three meets in the books, the Wolves return to action next Wednesday, September 23, when they travel to Orcas Island for a Northwest 2B/1B League meet.
